We stayed at the Zara boutique hotel in July 2013 we had read quite a few of the reviews on here with regards to smells but found no problems at all. We stayed in the royal villa with a nice size pool with a large bath and plenty of storage. We overlooked the stream and the beach. The hotel just needs some updating and better service.
The downsides were decking lifting, pool only cleaned every few days, breakfast was not great we only ate 2 days out of 6. Staff uniforms a bit shabby.
But this is thailand, most things are rough around the edges.
It really would not take much to improve this hotel. Central location too don't miss the sunday night markets which is every week right outside the door.
Great food and alcohol and shopping. Overall a reasonable hotel just needs a bit of updating.

We were a little early to arrive so we waited in restaurant while our room was organized. The river is a little daunting at first slightly smelly but not enough to spoil you're time here. Our pool villa was great but no privacy when using pool. Main pool is good as is the bar there. Staff are amazing all very good people. Breakfast very basic but nice. The gardens are gorgeous and very well maintained. Would stay again as is in great location being 100m to beach and close to yummy lunch & dinner restaurant's!

We stayed there for approx. 12 nights. Excellent service, well educated employees, good restaurant in the area, very close to the beach and a gym 150 m away. we missed nothing during our stay. in the bar excellent drinks have been served.

We stayed at the Zara, going by the pictures and reviews online to celebrate our anniversary. We'd only been able to book the smallest room which didn't have a pool as it was the only one available for booking on booking.com with the exception of the largest apartment which is suitable for a larger party. We felt really let down with our choice when we arrived. Our room was really small and basic. There was nowhere to sit other than the bed, no dressing table, no mirror except for the one in the bathroom and no ironing facilities. One of the window blinds kept falling off. My husband had to keep trying to fix it. The last couple of nights, he just left it but yet it was never fixed after staff came in to make up our room. Our bathroom was horrible. The shower was all rusty and everytime I touched it, it wobbled on the wall as if it was on its last hinges. One of our towels even looked like it had make up stains on it. I had to keep wiping the floor as there were these strange white bugs all over the bathroom floor that looked like bits of flaky paint

The resort has no privacy for each villa and we could clearly see other villas 'private ' pools and also into their bedrooms through the patio doors unless the curtains are closed. Having seen the pools, we were glad we didn't have the opportunity to book one of those villas. The pools looked tiny, more of a jacuzzi without the bubbles! I was hoping to use the main pool at the resort, but it's right next to a really smelly river.

We ended up spending time on the beach, which was pleasant enough. But the online pictures show nice brown wooden loungers on the beach. They're actually white plastic ones. The plastc tables that go with them were always dirty and sticky. They could have done with a clean at the end of each day as they had remains of drinks, ice lollies etc on them. The resort sun loungers on the beach aren't exclusive to resort guests. It's basically a first come first serve basis with the general public. The resort cafe is on the beach. You have to cross the smelly river to get to it. The bridge is a bit wobbly and the initial part on the villa side is steep. It wouldn't be suitable for someone such as the elderly or disabled, although they could walk further down outside the resort and use the main bridge.

We had breakfast every day at the cafe. It wasn't great, but is fine as long as you don't expect anything of hotel standard.

On the plus side, there is free wifi and the staff are lovely and friendly.

The resort needs quite an update and they'd be better off charging prices that reasonably reflect the standard of the resort.

We booked the Zara beach for 5 nights based on website pictures, as well some Trip Advisor's ones and comments. We were expecting luxurious place where to have great and relaxing vacation in a luxurious environment. It was definitely not the case. I first tried to call the hotel while in the taxis as our driver was not able to find the place and nobody answered the phone. I tried several times, no answers. We finally found the place on our own. The reception was OK but not a warm welcome. Lots of fountains at the entrance, and none of them was working. ( I believe since quite a while). They brought us to our double room pool villa, and since then massive disappointment started. First it was not clean at all. Towels, pillows, sheets were not clean with traces and even cigarette's burns. The furnitures are old an not maintained. Some lights where not working. Where ever you stay in the hotel, there is no privacy, you absolulty needs to close curtains. Don't imagine being with your loved one your private pool. If you go to the toilets in the room don't forget to put the paper in the bin and not in the toilets...
Now the restaurant ( if you want to call this a restaurant). They're serving a kind of breakfast that only very very cheap hotel would serve. Really disgusting. The restaurant is not maintained and looks horrible. (100% white).
On the beach , chairs are old and not clean. There is a river between the hotel and the beach which looks disgusting. They have installed a system to avoid bad smell and it seems to be working but it doesn't make it nice anyway.
Overall the hotel looks like a phantom hotel that was abandoned long time ago... Definitely no worst the money and pictures were taken certainly the day it opened...
Out of 5 nights planned we finally stayed only 1 night and checked out the second day for another hotel. They charged us the price of two nights.

We stayed in the Zara Beach Resort and were very happy with our choice - the staff is very polite and attentive, the villas are comfortable and the resort is, literally, in front of beautiful Lamai beach.

The restaurant in front of the resort, on the beach, provided wonderful meals and drinks, all served with a smile. The prices were very reasonable and considering that breakfasts were included with our stay, we found Zara offers a great combination of value, comfort and luxury.

The resort is child-friendly and is located within walking distance of Lamai town, with easy access to shops, restaurants, and even a Tesco supermarket.

If you are lucky enough to stay during a Sunday night, do not miss the Lamai street markets - right at the doorstep of the Zara resort.

We will definitely stay here for our next visit to Koh Samui.

This resort is absolutely beautiful. The rooms are fantastic, including the little beach huts. The private area on the beach is ideal, the staff go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Fantastic value, lovely restaurant, free WIFI, beautiful grounds, near the centre of Lamai. Couldn't fault the place

Room Tip: Spend a bit extra for a garden view room, beautiful gardens and fantastic room + en-suite
