We spent nine nights at Beach Republic and got to sample a great selection of dishes. We loved the variety available, there is a great mixture of Thai and western dishes. You can eat inside or outside the restaurant, pool side on your lounger or room service is available. Highlights for us were the fabulous staff, the tapas menu and the Sunday Brunch. All of our meals were tasty and enjoyable.
The staff at the restaurant and poolside are outstanding, like the rest of staff at Beach Republic. They are so attentive, friendly and accommodating. They looked after us so well for the duration of our stay and were one of the main reasons our holiday was so fabulous.
Buffet breakfast was included in our package. There was a good selection of both Thai and western dishes and hot and cold options. Pancakes and crepes are made to order as are the delicious omelettes and eggs in whatever style you prefer. Good selection of local fruit on offer as well.
There is a choice of different menus which was well appreciated. In addition to either the day time or dinner menu, a tapas menu runs all day.
The day time menu offers a selection of salads, sandwiches pasta dishes and pizzas. The pizzas, cooked in a wood fire oven, were huge and delicious. There is also a seafood selection and a Thai food section with stir fries and curries. The stir fries were very tasty and good size portions for lunch, we had the stir fry garlic and black pepper chicken and the stir fry sweet and sour chicken. My partner found the curries were also tasty, the Massaman curry packed some heat, with the favourite being the green curry. There’s also dessert.
The Tapas menu was a great option for us during the day. Quite often we would select items off this when we were wanting a smaller lunch or if we wanted a snack later in the day. There was a good selection and we had about every offering during our stay. Nothing disappointed. The sizes of each dish varies. On the menu are croquettes: ham, cheese & spinach and Pata Negra Iberico ham béchamel; tacos: tuna tartar or Tequila lime snapper; Hokkaido scallops; fried calamari, served on two generous skewers; lamb chilli con carne which was a decent size bowl and favourite; vegetable spring rolls; blue crab dumplings which were creamy and velvety; lamb short ribs; grilled lamb brochette which is served on one large metal skewer; and a selection of dips.
The dinner menu is an extension of the day time menu, with additional main course offerings again divided into western style dishes of beef, lamb, chicken, salmon and fish and a section of Thai inspired meals of curries and stir fries. There is also the seafood platter for two which we had for dinner one night as an inclusion in our package. The selection of hot and cold local seafood was very tasty, including soft shell crab, King prawns, oysters, salmon and calamari served with steamed rice. The classic vanilla pod crème brulee was a great way to end our delicious meal.
Sunday Brunch is an institution, popular with both guests and the locals. It is great value for money and would definitely recommend this. It’s so popular you need to make sure you book in advance. The buffet is all you can eat and runs from 11:30 until 3:30pm. You’re made to feel welcome for as long as you want to stay, when we left there was still quite a lot of time remaining and the staff kept letting us know that if we got hungry later we could rejoin the buffet – impossible as we were so full! It is very well priced. As an extra bonus as breakfast was included in our package and we were not having breakfast before the buffet, we were credited that against the buffet price. One of the best buffets we have had and we’re not usually big buffet fans. After receiving a complimentary drink, we were invited to start eating at the first station. The buffet area is broken up into 4 distinct stations!
On offer at the first station - starters and desserts. Starters included a selection of salads (Waldorf, nicoise, tuna and a variety of salad greens); selection of cold meats (roast Turkey, salamis); freshly made salmon pate; a selection of dressings; all very fresh. Desserts on offer were a selection of artisan ice creams (chocolate, vanilla, passionfruit and amoretto)the passionfruit ice cream was very nice; variety of cheeses and biscuits; great range of individual portion desserts: crème brulee, panna cotta and rich chocolate mousse were all sampled and divine!
A bbq cart has a selection of skewers cooked to order. Salmon, chicken, calamari, king prawn, Wagu beef and foie gras and mini hamburgers. We shared a piece of salmon and mini hamburger and enjoyed both.
Inside there is a section dedicated to traditional Thai dishes. Pad Thai made to order alongside a selection of curries (the yellow curry was a favourite of my partner) and stir fries (beef in oyster sauce, vegetable and chicken).
There is a seafood section with king prawns, smoked salmon, mussels, oysters and individual lobster salads. A selection of sashimi and sushi is available as are mini vegetable spring rolls.
The roast area offers turkey, lamb, beef, fish, pork and an array of vegetables.
Everything was very tasty and it was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Really good value for money and a great experience.
To accompany all of the wonderful food available, there are some great drink options. Happy hour is every afternoon from 5 until 7pm with cocktails two for one, along with some wine and beer. On a Saturday and Sunday there is three hours of free flow wine available from 12pm until 6pm. For three hours you get limitless quantities of a selection of wine and sparkling wine. It’s a great deal if not a little dangerous as the staff are so attentive in refilling your glass!
Room service is also available until 10:30pm but we didn’t use this preferring to eat at the restaurant.
We popped by Beach Republic for a chilled afternoon. Arriving around lunch, we sat down to eat first before transferring poolside. The food was surprisingly good! Most beach clubs have decent menus but nothing outstanding. Beach Republic isn't going to win any Michelin stars but there was certainly care taken over the preparation and ingredients. One of the crab dishes was so good we ordered a second portion. The pool is fairly small and space limited but we will definitely return next time we venture to Koh Samui.
Definitely a must for lunch or dinner with cocktails! Beautiful views, great service and high quality & delicious food!
The rooms numbered in the 300's are set back from the pool and the restaurant, which means that you're not at all disturbed by any noise which might come from that area. Unfortunately, the main road is next to the room block and combined with the air-con noise, we never really slept well. Having said that, the room themselves are cleaned every day. Four bottles of mineral water are also left every day and on arrival there is fresh fruit in a bowl. A nice touch was a birthday cake for my wife left in the room which was nice to discover. I can only assume they saw the cards and decided to make the gesture. Additionally, there were cakes or sweets left in the room in the evenings when the beds are turned back.
The restaurant serves an excellent breakfast. Everything from traditional "full English" to cereal, fruit, rice, stir-fry, you name it, it was there. We dined there one evening and it cost twice as much as the Starbay restaurant next door. My green curry had green baby chick peas in, lots of them. Not keen on that recipe to be honest.
The Thai staff were without exception, fantastic. I'm not the sort to be all overly familiar with staff, but a few deserve a mention. 'Boon' on reception is quite frankly a credit to the place. Huge smiles and waved enthusiastically to us every time we passed by. 'Than' and 'Phu' pool waiters were brilliant. Always setting up the sun loungers with fresh towels and coming immediately to the bed when you pressed the little service buzzer. In fact all of the Thai staff were happy and never missed an opportunity to say good morning or hello.
The pool area can be quite deserted when there's not a wedding on. We saw two weddings take place and it was nice to see the build up and ceremony on the beach. The area at the beach front on the left hand side is not a good location because there is a smell from drainage or something. The area to the right is better. This seems to be a problem often encountered in tropical climes and Thailand is no exception. Otherwise, the beds, loungers and four-posters are comfortable and well maintained. Happy hour buy one get one (the same) free. 5-7pm. Cocktails by the pool was just bliss.
The pools are on the small side but big enough for a splash. The water was warm, 40 degrees if I was to take a guess.
The beach is picture-postcard stuff and you can take a stroll to Lamai in about 15 leisurely minutes. The sea is only knee deep for the first 1000 metres out, after that there's a reef and the sea is deep and choppy. Therefore the 'lagoon' is difficult to swim in and the water is hot. Yes hot!, by midday the sea is say 45-50 degrees at a guess. We 'borrowed' a kayak from the hotel next door and it was great fun to paddle right round the lagoon for an hour or more. Trouble was that the kayaks are for hotel guests only and we weren't guests of that hotel. Oops! Perhaps Beach Republic should also make some kayaks available?
Now then, Sunday Brunch. Quality food and lots of it. The hotel gets invaded by outsiders on Sundays, but that's not a problem because as I've said, the place was deserted in the week and the arrival of some new faces along with the music livened the place up a lot. We paid approximately £20 each which I thought was a touch expensive considering there is only so much you can eat. You have to pay for drinks. Someone told me the wine was free but we were not offered any.
We took a few trips. A day safari taking in elephants, monkeys, crocodile shows and a Jeep up into the mountains. Well worth it. We also took the speedboat to Koh Nanguan to snorkel which was fantastic. The hotel books them with a third party who pick you up and drop you off. Appears to work very well. Obviously, Boon was there to wave goodbye and welcome us back, bless her.
Overall a fantastic holiday at a lovely resort. We would stay there again without hesitation.
Can it be improved? Well Julie might try smiling! (Go on, you know you want to). The drain smell needs fixing. The staff make an extra effort to polish the place prior to a wedding. (Shouldn't you be doing that every day?). That's about it. Wonderful.
