New Hut Bungalows

First of all - to get to the 'resort' you need to cross the walkbridge over the river/canal - DO NOT be put off by the look of the backside of the establishment - its just the way people do they work there and you have the chance to see the backsides of other restaurants and households. Go straight to the restaurant and order cocoshake and roll down on the beach... Its the stay work every penny.

We stayed there for 5 nights at rate of 360 Baht/per night. For that price we got nice and clean bungalow right on the beach. Be aware that conditions on the bungalow are basic but nice, clean and neat (no hot water in the shower but bed is comfy, mosquito net as new, bungalow looks new, well built and maintained properly). From what we found out, this was quite new establishment so infrastructure is still not ruined and everything does what it says on the tin. For that small price you get the location you could only dream of in Lamai. Its maybe 10-15min beach walk from the centre but therefore is quiet and really enjoyable.

Now comes the best bit - restaurant. The food there was the best we had on our 3 weeks trip, coctails are most delicious. And the prices are from the bottom scale! Restaurants porch overlooks beach and sunrise - eating there a meal early in the morning or at night when full moon - its a real tropical, holiday, experience. Only downside is staff - they don't look too spontanious but they do their job well and overall are friendly - just give them a chance! :)

What we didnt like? Staff could do more with some smile and learn bit more english to get those meals orders right ;) We had a snake in our bungalow - but hey, its Thailand and it happens there - room service got rid of it for us in 15 min by catching it in the bag. Apart from that - best value for money in Lamai.

Beach is beautifull and neigbours are high rated resorts. Lamai itself offers you everything. If you are a biker, like us, there are good places to rent a proper motorcycle at fantastic prices - we definitely recommend one - run by a chap from Milton Keynes! :)

Overall - if we ever come back on Koh Samui - New Hut Bungalows will be the place where we stay or at least pop in for a meal!

Please note - didn't expect any luxuries in bungalows. We just wanted to try how is it to spend few nights in a charming bungalow on the beach and it worked 100%. As far as I remember they gave it good review in Lonely Planet guide - and I put my signature down as well.

I stayed here just once because the guesthouse I usually stay at next door was full. The location was good and the hut was rock bottom basic more like a tent than a hut. I'm not complaining about that however because it was also quite cheap. At first the owner was friendly and the place seemed like a real find.
However all this changed because I continued going to the guesthouse next door for most of my meals. My friends were there and besides, the food was much better! My mistake because I didn't realise that the GH makes most of its money out of the restaurant.
After about three days of this, I came home from a night out to find all my stuff dumped in front of my hut! I was being kicked out. I tried to rectify this issue with the owner and the motorcycle helmet that belonged with the scooter I had rented from them went "missing" during these minutes. It was quite obvious that it had been taken by one of the hotel staff but try to prove this. I refused to pay but the woman called the police on me (they were there in 1 minute, must have been prearranged) and they extorted the money out of me.
Moral of the story, if you really want to stay there (they do have the cheapest beachfront huts in Lamai) do so but take care to eat in the restaurant at least once a day, watch your belongings and check the bill carefully because the owner isn't really a honest lady.

Nice minimalist huts with clean and cosy rooms, great food at sea-vew restaurant, friendly and unobtrusive staff. The beach looks awesome, BUT the sea is shallow with some rocks on the bottom, so watch your step!

Located in Lamai beach the New Hut bungalows combine a fare price with excellent bungalows. Backpacker will love it. You have no hot water but the huts are clean and come with fan and mosquito net. We payed for a bungalow with beach view 500 Bath per night, in comparison with the other huts around a fantastic price. The beautiful restaurant has excellent dishes and a broad choice - from breakfast to dinner!
This family run place also organizes transport and tours for you. So actually no need to leave New Hut to go to Lamai.
