If you want to eat the best Slovenian dishes, then you should visit Skarucna. This is one of those old Slovenian inns, where time stopped for a moment. Located on the old road to Brnik from the direction of Vodice. Ambience is beautiful and authentic. So it looks like inns several decades ago. Food is a separate issue. Slavko (the owner) can be so pleasant to present and serve without competition far around. Recommend that you completely letting his choice. Lunch or dinner is a real ceremony, which takes several hours. Starts with the welcome drink already at the door - walnut or blueberry or herbs liqueur. Continues with tasty appetizers and soups and various small snacks. Smoked and oven roasted trout is a real treat. Followed by the main course, which varies depending on which meat is Slavko won. In conclusion, it is mandatory aunt's dessert and cheese pie (sirovi struklji). You have to come prity hungry when visiting inn skaručna, because after five or six hours you will live the place completely full.
I strongly recommend a mandatory stop in Skarucna when visiting Ljubljana.

Perhaps the best food theater ever. Slavc (chef and main presenter) is having such an energy that you can not match him ever. The food (the very local + the very Slavc inventions) not only goes and goes - - and goes - and goes... But then you forget what you ate since you can not avoid perfect wine selection and special homemade grapas and all kind of liquors. And all stories. And all vintage songs.

When you enter, the famous bar in Star Wars might be the first thing coming to your mind. People at the crowded bar that don't fit, a million of souvernirs from the past, revolutionary photos, hundreds of vinyl records and an actually constantly used gramophone, empty and half empty liquor bottles all around the bar…

Do not be misled. It is worth the occasional ten minutes waiting for an empty table in the neighboring rooms. The place is a true gem – the background music ranges from old rock to Russian Communist songs, service is quick and efficient (if somewhat overly friendly), food more or less local, yet enriched with global influences and made with utmost care and precision. And don't worry, nobody has ever left this eatery hungry… Probably also nobody left earlier then in three hours+ time.

To the beginning. The place is some ten miles from Ljubljana centre, in a village below the neighboring Šmarna gora. No problem with parking. In every respect it appears a typical village inn. Restrooms well kept. The owner Slavko (second generation) is a truly funny and enthusiastic guy with a pony tail, nearing forties, always serving and chatting at the tables, making jokes at the bar. He actually changed the ever popular place beyond recognition and in the best possible manner. The cuisine has received a touch of different spice, the accent is no longer on quantity (years ago you had problems already getting through the starters…) but on fine nuances of taste. A sound 14- on a 1 to 20 scale. Beware, though: just like in the old more traditional days, do not expect to have much vote in what will be served to you…

Wine used to be the weak point in the old times, they only served three house wines of expected mediocre quality. The young owner brought about a complete change – as a dinner guest I did not see the wine list, but from what I tasted, saw and heard, there is a truly wide choice of orange wines from both sides of the Slovene-Italian border as well as several other white and red labels.

Even though the place is obviously very far from posh, it is extremely popular in spite of the price level, which is hardly cheap. Anyway, you pay correctly for what you get, and at the door you are already sure to visit again. After all, the Slovenian wine&dine experts (professionals and amateurs) voted it for No 6 (ex equo) best restaurant in Slovenia!

Our group of four "only" had four hours for lunch. But what four hours! A succession of traditional Slovenian dishes, drinks and wines (and also some apple juice) was really perfect on a cold winter day. Food and wines were of very high quality. Setting and atmosphere were warm and cosy. Service was extremely friendly and attentive. Good value for money. One of my best food experiences.

Everything already said is absolutely true. An out of this world experience, with great hospitality, very warm environment, excellent wine and unbelievable tasty and authentic SloveNian food. I think the highlight of our trip will be the experience in Skarucna. Visit with plenty of free time and you will definitely won't regret.
