“Modern self-catering cottages nestled in the fynbos”
Reviewed October 8, 2016 for a stay in September 2016

These are quiet, modern, comfortable cottages in the middle of a hillside fynbos reserve. You're surrounded by plants, flowers, and birds. Trails lead up into the mountains to the north, including picturesque Tolkein-esque rocks and a waterfall.

Our cottage was very airy and bright, with a two-story loft and atrium, hardwood floors, and a modern kitchen. The beds and furniture were modern and comfortable. There's a built-in outdoor braai, naturally.

Pluses:
-Our cottage had a deck and sweeping views of the valley to the south.
-The interior was beautiful. Because of the atrium ceiling, it felt much more open than the typical self-catering cottage.
-Fully equipped, modern kitchen.
-Electricity, hot and cold water.
-Cottage heated by a very effective wood stove.
-Very quiet setting, even though it's only a mile or two from the highway.
-Very few insects when we were there in early spring.
-Convenient location for touring the western Overberg.
-Run by a friendly family who offer nature tours (the husband, Chris, is a botanist with access to some special local areas that are otherwise off limits to the public).

Minuses:
-No TV or WiFi.
-The water comes from a spring high on the mountain, and is the color of pale tea. That's normal for a fynbos spring, and it's clean and safe has no odor. But it does look a little weird at first glance.
-Not a problem, but an oddity: In one of the bathrooms, the shower had a pebbled glass door leading outdoors. I don't know if this is an emergency exit or a back-to-nature thing (some cottage listings in S.A. brag about having outdoor showers). Anyway, the glass is lets in light but is not see-through, so it's not a big deal.
-You can't check in on a Sunday (but you can check out).

Thank you Mike for your thorough review. Amused by your comment on our showers with glass doors. We were never totally able to understand the purpose of these ourselves when we took over and renovated the cottages. We left them in as they are still totally private with the fencing outside and do ensure the bathrooms are full of light.
We don't do changeovers on a Sunday as we want to ensure our staff get a day off, and it does mean that weekend guests are able to make the most of their time as we do not ask them to leave before the afternoon.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Phillipskop! The accommodation was spacious and comfortable and we appreciated the serenity and lovely views. We did some of the trails to the cave, waterfall and Phillipskop (the children as well!) and loved the beautiful fynbos in bloom. The immediate surrounding area also offers wine tasting, whale watching etc. and we hope to be back soon!

“Stunningly beautiful scenery, unspoilt natural wonder, airy spacious houses”
Reviewed September 14, 2015 for a stay in September 2015

Beautifully refurbished houses - very spacious and light - situated in a tranquil location with stunning views in every direction. We took two houses with friends and had two children under five and two teenagers - everybody loved it. The houses are big enough that we could all comfortably eat together with plenty of room to spare. This would be a fantastic place for a gathering of friends and family.

The setting is breathtaking - carefully managed fynbos all around, and views across the valley to farms and trees. There are some wonderful walks through the fynbos up the hills around the houses. We only managed to do one of the walks to take in the waterfall and the more adventurous of our party did the final scramble up to the cave. We are definitely going back to do some further walks and next time will book to take a guided walk with Chris, probably the most well informed nature walk host you will ever find.

Chris and Anna are wonderful hosts and take good care of their guests in a lovely unobtrusive way. They live on site a few hundred metres away so are available if needed.

This is definitely the place to go if you want peace and quiet, beautiful scenery, lovely walks, birdsong and a sense of calm and tranquility. All well worth the bumpy drive along the track from the road!
