‘Perfection’ is the word that springs to mind. Totally owner-driven and by such a charming and affable couple. Wonderful, relaxing surroundings, great food of arresting quality and freshness. I loved it – everything worked!

All the dishes were more than the sum of their parts, the balancing and combination of flavours were spot on, turning what might be considered ‘simple’ ingredients into a taste sensation. White gazpacho – wonderful! Great consistency, perfectly balanced flavours of almonds, garlic and lemon, quite intoxicating. Confit of duck, succulent soft meat and crisp skin, but what raised the dish above the ordinary was the addition of the mustard infused lentils lending rustic flavour and the preserved naartjie the juice of which could be used to ‘dress’ the lovely fresh leaves and the soft skin acted as a perfect foil to the richness of the duck. I skipped dessert – although I did taste a pretty perfect crème brûlée, with a glass like topping and heavenly rich cream below – in favour of another starter – a gruyere soufflé with a red pepper cream - aromatic and light as a feather and actually a great end to a most enjoyable lunch.

Marianna's is a gem. And it's well nigh impossible to get a table on a Sunday in the summer without booking. We tried unsuccessfully two years ago, but this time Marianna and Peter found us a place on their 'reserved' table, one of just eight in this small, friendly eaterie cum deli in Stanford. The food was worth the wait. The starters we had were a perfect gruyere cheese souffle in a creamy tomato sauce and local white beans (like butter beans but with a nuttier taste) in a vinagrette with vine tomatoes and olives. Mains were equally good: a tender, moist 'oink nek' (deboned neck of pork) on a creamy mash with appley sauce and a subtle fish curry with perfectly cooked hake in a delicate but flavoursome, Malay-influenced sauce. Starters were about 30 ZAR, mains 70 and deserts 30. Good value. The wines are locally sourced and compare well to the rest of the Western Cape. All in all, a fab place for a leisurely Sunday lunch. But book in advance!
