Many things contribute to making Marianas special: the drive through the countryside and then through the quiet village of Stanford; the peace and quiet you experience while sitting on the verandah listening to the birds and looking out onto the lovely garden; Pieter, the perfect host, who will have you chuckling when he describes the dishes on the chalkboard menu; the complimentary jug of water.
And then there’s the food which chef/owner Mariana humbly describes as home cooking. There is some truth in this, the food is honest, unpretentious and tastes wholesome, but it is certainly not average home cooking. The menu is so interesting that it was difficult to decide what to eat, everything sounds so delicious. My hubby cannot stop talking about the duck confit with lentils, according to him the best duck confit he has ever had. And I absolutely loved the roulade with a stuffing of spinach and goats cheese.
We left feeling nurtured by the good food and the surroundings, and with a locally produced salami to enjoy later on.
