“Fantastic experience!”
Reviewed April 21, 2014

We had a fantastic time at the Garden Route Game Lodge and felt welcome right from the drive in from the gate! All the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Check in took only a few minutes and we were able to settle in and freshen up in our comfortable room. We were a party of 3 adults and decided to share a room for the one night we stayed. We had plenty of space and a great view from the veranda. The highlights of our stay were the two game drives. Our group was led by Byron who proved to be a wealth of knowledge and information. He was so pleasant and made our first guided safari experience magic. The food, especially breakfast, and the service was exceptional. We will recommend the Garden Route Game Lodge to all our friends and anybody visiting the Garden Route on holiday. Thanks to all the staff and especially Byron for looking after us so well.

The Garden Rout Game Lodge is a great place to do Safari also with young children! We enjoyed the game grives with our guide "Ashley", who did a really great job. We can also recommend the room in the main house and the heated pool ;-).
The food for dinner was always great.

Greetings from Anja, Timm and Tom from Frankfurt/Germany

Room Tip: We liked our room in the main house. It was oppisite the pools, so a great place to relay between th...

Needed a stopover en route to Cape Town. So booked into the lodge. Lovely rooms in the hotel section with a grand view of the mountains out of your front door. Comprehensive supper buffet meal and acceptable breakfast available. Very quiet - could hardly believe we were a stone's throw from N2.

My partner and I enjoyed a one night safari stay in the Waterhole View Chalet Room.
Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by every member of staff that came into view, once checked into our room one of the guides showed us the facilities of the lodge and to our room - he offered to carry our bags also. He answered all our questions and showed us how everything worked in our chalet. Great service!
We were given a note that included our itinerary so we knew where to be and when.
During our first drive (evening) we were supplied with raincoats - the rain was on and off so the raincoats came in handy. On the first drive we saw a bachelor wilderbeast, 2 x hippos, 2 x rhinos (who were a mere meter from our 4WD - the guide had to reverse back - however she mentioned they are very curious animals) AND a cheetah enjoying a fresh kill. For ethical reason the lions are kept in a seperate enclosure - we got to see the lionesses enjoying an old carcass while the male stood with pride in the distance. After our first drive we enjoyed a glass of sherry together as a group to celebrate.
On the second drive (morning) we saw a herd of wilder-beast including two babies, plenty of springbok, ostriches, zebra including two babies, 2 giraffe with one baby (the mother was pregnant so there will be two babies soon), a quick glimpse of a water buffalo and 2 elephants in their own enclosure - the enclosure was due to one of the elephants being newly introduced to the lodge. We saw one cheetah in the rehabilitation centre.
On both drives our guide was very informative and answered the many questions everyone had. She always made sure that we were comfortable.
The food is buffet style. I'm not a massive fan of buffets however this one was enjoyable - it wasn't the best food but it was good for a buffet. For dinner there were plenty of soups, salads and vegetables to choose from, plus a chef cooking meats to your liking. My partner really enjoyed the Wart Hog and I enjoyed the Sole. We got to choose a dessert off a menu - I had the South African pudding which was lovely. The cheese plate on offer at the end of dinner was probably my highlight. There was a good wine list that had informative descriptions of wines for those that are unsure.
The breakfast buffet was more enjoyable than the dinner, there was everything you can imagine for breakfast on offer. The egg chef cooked my eggs perfectly and the pancakes were delicious.
After our breakfast we visited the Reptile Centre to learn about different South African snakes, there were also tortoises and crocodiles. Snakes could be handled for those brave enough!
The lodge itself is absolutely stunning, there are lots of places to sit and enjoy the scenery either on the balcony or by a fireplace.
My partner and I definitely feel that safari at the Garden Route Game Lodge was a highlight of our trip to South Africa, since it was our first safari our expectations weren't incredibly high. When we go to Africa again we would love to visit a free roaming game park in a more remote part of Africa...but like I have written, this game lodge is the perfect introduction to safari's and I couldn't recommend it any more highly.
Tip: in our chalet our queen bed was two singles pushed together - request a 'topper' to ensure it's one bed with no crack to fall in during the middle of the night, go to the toilet before starting safari! :) Take a camera with a good lens, dress appropriately for the weather

Room Tip: The Waterhole Chalet Room was beautiful and very private - make sure your bed isn't two pushed t...

My friend and I organised a surprise trip for my Mum's birthday and happened across the Garden Route Game Drive. Could not have been more delighted with the whole experience. We were greeted by smiling, cheerful staff despite being late, the rooms were beautifully decorated and the beds very comfortable. Throughout the service we received was excellent and the staff were accommodating and enthusiastic. Particular shout out to Hannes, our game ranger, who had an amazing catalogue of facts about each animal and really made the trip for us. Big thank you to all involved. I won't hesitate to recommend.

we have spent the last 2 nights at the lodge and this is our 3rd visit in 10 years - WOW has this placed moved on and it keeps amazing us how our experiences continue to improve!!

We are a family of 3 - 2 adults and a our daughter, we stayed in the main house where the rooms were large, comfortable and have easy access to all other key parts of the lodge - dinning room, bar, pool, kraal (evening bon fires) skeleton garden, bird viewing hide over the watering hole, reptile enclosure and the meeting point for the game drive.

Food was amazing !!! good for the whole family

Game drives was our highlight - HANNES (head ranger) is a legend, the guy was so full of brilliant facts and knowledge and we were truly inspired - a real asset !!!! We saw a cheetah kill a springbok, hippo, lion,

Summary - If you are travelling to south African and are coming up from cape town this is undoubtedly the best way to spend your cash and time taking in a truly wonderful safari experience without wasting valuable holiday time and energy.

Well done to all the Garden route Game Lodge people and we cant wait to see you in a few years time.

Room Tip: go for the chalets with a view of the watering hole.

We visited the Lodge for the long weekend with friends and family to celebrate my brother getting married. We were welcomed by a ranger showing us where to park and taking us to our rooms and carried out our luggage. We had a very spacious, very neat and stunningly decorated room for the 3 of us to stay in with an extra bed for our 3 year old. We unpacked and went for a swim in their sparkling pool as it was very hot outside. After our swim we sat on the deck enjoying the stunning view of the area while sipping on a drink. We had a lovely supper the evening and slept like kings in the comfy beds.Coffee and rusks before the early morning game drive to wake us up. After yet another stunning and informative game drive we had an amazing buffet breakfast with a huge variety of mouthwatering foods to choose from. When returning to our room we found the beds made and the room clean and refreshed! The wedding was stunning and we were super sad to leave at the end of the weekend! We will be back there soon with more family and friends from America to go and show off our beautiful country in style! The Garden Route Game Lodge is worth a visit to relax, be spoiled and drink in nature! People went out of their way to make sure we had the best memories and stunning photo's to take with us back home!! True South African hospitality at it's best!!!

Room Tip: If you want to be a part of nature and wake up IN the bush, stay in the chalets. For a family with k...
