Golden Sun Hotel
Reviewed October 6, 2013

We were part of a large group with 9 adults and 11 children aged 10, 9, 9, 8, 7, 6, 6, 5, 4, 4, 3. There were 4 families altogether. Only one family group had their own transport. The rest of us thought we would be fine as the hotel on their website offered complimentary shuttle pick ups/drop offs to town and beach including port pick up and drop off.

As we were a large group, and one group had 4 children, there was a huge task finding accommodation that could fit 4 groups and had an apartment big enough for a family of 6! The Golden Sun fit this bill and their website had a special offer with 77 euros per night for an apartment for 6 adults. 3 of us emailed to query this as we couldn't select the right number of children on their website just adults and the price went up dramatically! Friends of ours secured theirs for 90 euros per night. I was very unlucky and couldn't get his deal despite arguing that I was the first person to find the website, email then and notify everyone else. The price for our group was 110 euros which is a massive hike from 77 euros and I was paying 240 euros more, in total, than the others. Basically my family was held at ransom by the hotel, as one of the families paid quickly, in full, for theirs and was non-refundable. I didn't want this to spoil the holiday so we got over this quickly and looked forward to our holiday on Naxos. We arrived at the port and found the owner of Golden Sun waiting for us at the port with a 9 seater MPV. 14 of us had to squeeze in the remaining 8 seats as the owner would not make two trips to accommodate all of us. We did not feel comfortable with this but had no choice other than paying for a taxi! Hmmm..... for complimentary pick up!

On arrival we were pleasantly impressed with the hotel and the clean bedrooms and we all relaxed quickly after a long journey from the UK and a boat trip. The kids all loved the pool so much and had lots of fun.

On the second night we went to the bar area to buy ice creams for the children and had a chilling time chatting, however the owner unfortunately grabbed the shoulder of one of the boys in our group accusing him of pouring in a bottle of sand into the toilet. This sand incident was apparently witnessed by the owner's 8/9 year old son! The 9 year old, in our group, was quite distressed and upset and denied he did it. He is always truthful and it upset all of us including all of the children and we left the bar area feeling very uncomfortable.

As we felt uncomfortable we stayed away on the 3rd day as the atmosphere towards us was quite hostile.

On the 4th day at the insistence of the children we spent a day at the pool and the receptionist got furious with the children as one of them peeled the sealant off the tiles which was in place to replace missing grouting. The child concerned owned up and apologised. The owners were furious - it is so difficult, the child concerned said the sealant was flapping and he found it so tempting to pull it off. It was also very embarrassing for us as we were told that we all had the 'worst behaved children' they ever had. All we could see our children laughing and having fun playing with their friends. There were NO notices displaying informing us of ANY quiet times enforced at this hotel.

Those two incidents were the only incidents in the entire 12 days, and we experienced hostility for the rest of our 12 day stay. It was very obvious they didn't like our group so we offered to move to another hotel. I and the others in the group have never experienced this kind of hostility ever when on holiday and we have spent several euros to come here, they refused to refund us to allow us to move saying we were free to move if we wanted but no refund. We stayed but felt very uncomfortable.

We were all quite uptight with the children and kept telling them to be quiet and not jump in the pool etc. During the rest of our stay we witnessed other children, including the owners boys, being worst behaved than ours, running around the pool, tampering with the safety equipment, pushing others in the pool. They were ignored by the owners and the staff! Our children saw the injustice in this!

We experienced awful hostility because of two 'crimes' - accused incorrectly of pouring down sand and peeling off flapping sealant. It seems quite unfair and unjustifiable. At the end of the holiday

families in our group left at different times. One left in the morning and got transportation to the port, close to ferry departure. Two other groups left on different afternoons to catch the 6pm ferry. We were asked to catch the 3pm shuttle! The port is 10 mins away so it would mean walking around in the hot sunshine for 2 hours with kids and luggage until check-in time. One family managed to negotiate a 4pm drop off however still spent 2 hours hanging around the port as the ferry was an hour late. This is something the hotel could check for them. They had no consideration of their comfort! For us, we were told we would be informed if we could have a later drop off , we asked for 5pm to be close to our ferry departure time of 6pm. We were told that they would inform us if this would be possible as they had to ask the driver aka the owner. At 4pm, we were all in the pool and were told we had to leave immediately for the port transportation. We refused and booked a taxi at 5pm to allow us time to get ready. Their port transportation service is dependent on the driver's mood and whether he is willing to drive you. If you happen to get on the wrong side of him, he won't be accommodating.

The hotel offers shuttle transportation to town and beach for 3 specified times, around 11am, 3pm and 7pm. They drop you off quite a distance from town and the beach and you have to walk along the road with no pavements to get to the beach and town. It takes 10 minutes to get to the beach and 15 minutes to the centre of town walking at a child's pace. Plus, you get squeezed into the MPV with others, even with strangers! At one time there were 18 of us in the 9-seater MPV! You need to have your own transportation to stay here as it would make your stay more comfortable rather than being dependent on the driver/owner. To be fair to him, he was kind enough to drop us off at nearby aqua park taking a different route to the beach.

If you have read my other reviews, they are nothing like this as I have always been positive about where I have stayed ignoring the minor niggles that don't matter however I feel that this stay has been my worst ever and we travel extensively with our children.

On the whole this is a decent place to stay if you have your own transportation, perfectly behaved children, don't get on the wrong side of the owners and grab the right price!

Naxos Island is simply beautiful with stunning scenery and the hotel has panoramic views to the sea. You can see Naxos town and the gate in the distance.

We never expected such a great service and hospitality! we definitely going back next year! in every aspect we were satisfied, the food, the live music, the swimming pool, the room service and of course our peacefull and comfortable room. The location is also beneficial due to the close distance from both the beach and the many traditional vlillages of the area. A great base to explore the entire island. This hotel made the island of naxos a permament destination for our vacation.

The hotel is well place between the city of Naxos ang Saint Prokopios beach which is the most famous beach of the island. The rooms are clean and spacious, the swimming pool also seems clean and overall the facilities are well looked after by the family that owns the hotel and their staff.
The only thing that doesn't give it a 5 star rating from me, was the food. The breakfast buffet was unacceptable as the quantiities were small and the plates were always empty after 5 minutes or less. A buffet that was prepared in a hurry, just to say that breakfast was served. As for dinner, half of the nights we stayed for dinner at the hotel. Besides the fact the variety was very poor, every night the dinner menu was the leftovers of lunch!!!
Coming to a conclusion, it is a nice and price efficient place to stay, but eat somewhere else...

Great facilities and very spacious rooms. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The hotel is located close to port and beach with some shuttle service offered to each. However, it would be best to rent transportation as the walk to the closest town/ beach is about 20 minutes. Drive is 5 minutes to beach and 10 to port. Given my short stay and traveling solo, the hotel had more amenities than I needed, but I did feel safe and comfortable. Would be great for families and larger groups.

Stayed at the Golden Sun Hotel for 5 days in August. Although not located in island's capital, the hotel is a short drive away making it easy to get there by car or other form of transport. It is a short walk (about 15 min) to the town of Agios Prokopios known for it's beach. The hotel is also near the town of Agia Anna (10 min by car but you can walk to/from hotel) where you can find many beach-front restaurants and enjoy a nice dinner on the beach.

The hotel is very clean (new towels and sheets daily), and the staff is more than friendly! They answered all questions and even offered to give us a ride to town as it was on their way! Breakfast (included) is served every morning and includes the basics. There is an onsite restaurant as well that serves lunch and dinner, and a bar where you can enjoy a drink by the pool.

We plan to visit the hotel again next year as it is definitely worth the money spent.
