“A hidden gem”

Had a truly wonderful week in this gem of a Hotel Elia.. Charming, tranquil and full of character, set within secluded lush gardens with stunning views across the island. We really felt at home thanks to the personal attention from the staff, but also the respect for personal space and relaxation to please yourself, eat when you want and to relax and soak up the sun. Have travelled in Greece a lot and this location has everything that i love about Greece..Amazing light, home cooked food in a natural environment. Thanks again, will be back soon.

Don't tell too many people, but this is a fantastic place! Peaceful and quiet on a hill, surrounded bij fruit trees and olive trees. With many lovely seats around the place, hammocks, a wonderful pool, a terrace up on the roof with splendid views and a lovely staff. A home away from home, once you've entered, you don't want to leave. The area is great as well. So much to do and owner Jo is happy to give you all the tips about the best beaches nearby and places to visit.
I really should keep this place to myself so it won't get spoilt, but with a maximum of 18 people the hotel can put up, I'll take that risk! Many of the guests were returning guests and I'm sure we'll go back as well!

Room Tip: We were in lemontree, right next to the dining area. It was a standard room, but very nice. Good sho...

We have just spent a week in this delightful hotel. It is set in the middle of an olive grove on the side of a hill with views towards the sea. There are only 9 rooms in this converted family farmhouse, and our room was one of the oldest in the house. It was a rather dark room with traditional furniture, but the bedside lights were good enough for reading. It was comfortable and clean, not modern. The shower was fine, and the water always hot. We had a large balcony of our own, with fantastic views over the garden and the surrounding hills. The ambience of the place was warm, welcoming and very peaceful.
Breakfasts were lovely, buffet style, everything home-made and you help yourself and then go and choose one of the many delightful tables in the garden or on the terrace, surrounded by flowers and birdsong. We ate there every evening, and the food was excellent, but there was little choice. You have to let them know in the morning whether you will be eating in or not, and are given a rough idea of the menu. The vegetarian options were always delicious.
We didn't use it but there was a large pool in the garden.
The staff here were outstanding, always helpful and with time to chat. Thank you Jo, and all your team.
You can walk from the hotel, but a car is essential here.

We have just spent a week at Elia for an 80th birthday celebration with extended family aged 10 to 80. The hotel could not have been more welcoming and helpful and felt like a real home from home.
We loved:
- the view to the sea from the beautiful swimming pool
- the wonderful extended breakfast including freshly squeezed orange juice from the local orange groves and the lesson in how to make traditional davos
- the extensive local knowledge of the staff who wanted to share their experiences
- the long delicious evening meals and the local wine and raki
- the wonderful embroidered crisp cotton sheets and attention to detail throughout
- the little terraces to relax on the shade and the sun
- the friendliness and helpfulness of everyone there

We couldn't have asked for more!

Room Tip: We used 6 of the 10 rooms and they were all great.

We stayed at the Elia Spa last year for 7 days at the end of October, walking in the local area. The hotel is a lovely old Creatan building, now extremely well renovated and appointed with some lovely rooms, shady courtyard and elevated breakfast balcony above one of the bedrooms. It's mainly commonwealth and Cretan staff are a really nice bunch, led by Joe Brace who looked after us beautifully. I cannot recommend there helpfulness more highly. You need a car to get there and to get to local restaurants etc but the food in the hotel is excellent. It's a set menu and it was noticeable that most people eat in most nights - so they must have thought is was good as well. The local area walks are lovely, through vineyards, villages, farmland and countryside, and the coast and mountains are well within easy driving range.

Room Tip: Look for one of the outside rooms, away from the main building.

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Elia and thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. We arrived at 1 am to find sandwiches and drinks in our room, which was great after a long journey! Breakfast is very relaxed and delicious , as are the dinners! Yes, there are a few cats with their kittens but they are well looked after and really not a big problem! Jo and her team are great hosts!

We stayed here for a week in mid-October 2013 as part of an Inntravel Discovery Holiday. Overall we enjoyed the hotel and wonderfully peaceful rural area away from the busy touristy towns and beaches. The staff and manager were excellent, with service and touring advice very much appreciated. Our large west facing bedroom was mostly rather dark and the bed plus en-suite toilet facilities somewhat simple, but overall fine and comfortable. We ate all our evening meals at the hotel each night (our choice) and they were very reasonably fixed priced at 15.00 euros per person including local wine. The fixed menu was mostly very good (often too much to eat), consisted of 3 courses with raki included with the final course - we couldn’t drink it all! We really appreciated the local chef's cooking and regional ingredients.
The only real down-side from our perspective was the many cats that inhabit the outdoor eating areas. For both breakfast and evening meals we were often surrounded by cats and kittens, who given half a chance would be on the chairs and table and eating our food!! The staff often used water sprays to chase them away, but it didn’t last long. This is all OK if you are a cat lover, but we found it less than enjoyable at certain times. This aspect of the hotel will definitely put us off going again.

Room Tip: If you like cats, then the place is good. Ask for a room with a balcony, either east facing (morning...

We are aware that this year we do have an abundance of cats (well actually kittens as they seem to have been breeding so fast this year). We have tried very hard to find them homes, and even had a few offers but nothing materialized; we usually manage to give them away but they seems to be far too many this year everywhere and no-one is interested, and I am afraid we are all too soft not to feed them. Any suggestions or homes to be found we will happily arrange the inoculations etc at this end; or any vets who know of someone who would like to come for a working holiday to help us to contain this we would love to hear from you.
We do worm them and de-flea them, and they are well fed and are more after company than they are food. Being in such a rural place we are lucky not to have any problems with vermin, so they are actually quite an important asset to the place, admittedly we don't need quite so many.
They do have a tendency to go off during the winter and find their own territories so we never have more than a few when we open up.
Our sincere apologies go to any guests who have found this to have a negative impact on their stay.
