During a Creta tour I certainly suggest to spend a some days in Avra Imperial, a wonderful beach Resort almost in the middle of nowhere but in very good position to visit wondeful Balos lagoon and one hour drive to amazing Elafonissi beach.
The resort is really a statement, the Hall seems an airport lobby, very modern, all glass with white stones, white chairs and two tubolar glass lift.
The rooms are big, with nice and simple modern decor, wood floors and terrace.
Bathroom is big in creamy stones and has both shower and tube.
The resort has an enourmous central cristal Pool served by a Bar and moreover many rooms have private or private shared pools.
Our room had direct access from the veranda to a private pool shared with other eight rooms.
A good choice, as the pool was long enough to swimm.
Inside the resort there are three restaurants : Buffet international, Italian, Asian mix.
The breakfast is rich and good with quality food.
The Spa is spectacular with a wonderful indoor pool and all the massages one can desire, aestetic treatments and a saloon.
The private beach is pleasant with big round stones, when they become hot by the sun put some along your spine and relax!

Room Tip: I suggest to choose a room with the shared private pool as the pool is long and one can swimm, if...

The management has undoubtedly taken into account the comments here. Clean rooms, very spacious and well working airco, buffet restaurant more than enough variety and choice (inside rather 'refter' feeling and sound, ask a table at the terrace) quiet and qualitative SPA treatments (great massages), large hotel so indeed quite busy around the pool, but who's looking for some rest go to the beach! Last but not least, a very big compliment for the captain Yannis Andreadakis for his eternal smile, his humor, his excellent service! A little bit more personnel would be nice. Go to drink / eat something in the village, at the authentic beach restaurant at the upper left !

Room Tip: ask a quiet room

We are just back from a relaxing stay at this hotel. The rooms are some of the nicest we have stayed in with a full bathroom, comfy beds and air conditioning as standard. The food at the hotel is excellent and the pools are amazing. The best part of our holiday was the kids club ran by Sandy. My 7 year old daughter had decided before our visit that there was no way she was going to kids club, but by the second day, she had marched herself off to it straight after breakfast to only show her face once she was hungry. Sandy is amazing with the kids and has a long day from 9am to 10pm. ( she is also part of the animation team entertaining the adults in the evening) but never stops smiling and having fun with the kids. The animation team worked very hard all day to make your stay fun and entertaining at Avra. The only draw back to this hotel is that there is little to do outside the complex. But we would recommend it highly and hope to return one day soon. Thank you all the staff for our relaxing stay.

Great hotel with great food! Perfect with the free gym and great to have a private pool. I also liked the beach ant the very nice little village with great restaurants (easy to take the bus to Platanias and Chania but I´m so happy that I did not stay there).

The Italian animation team was really something special: Steven, Ania, Sandy and Roberto - with them you (and you´re children) will have a lot of fun and you can stay fit too! I really miss them all! The water gymnastics, the coctalicontest, the grouptraining in the gym, the shows, the smiles <3

Please also visit the small streets and buildings up on the mountain! I would love to come back!

Just one small thing to make a complain about - there were not enough sunbeads by the pools...

I spent a week at the Avra Imperial with my mom in July 2013. We were looking for a great place in Crete to spend a peaceful vacation together as I live in the US and she lives in France and we don't get to enjoy time together often. The hotel came highly recommended by Directours for its service and location (Western Crete) so we booked it even if I had looked at Daios Cove when we called them.

I am not sure where to start but first of all, I found the Avra just too built up... why did they have to put so much marble/concrete everywhere...??? for me, it was similar to a hotel in Vegas. And I really didn't travel as far as Crete to feel like I am in Vegas... the surroundings and small village is so beautiful, I am sure they could have done something great with all the space they got without putting so much concrete all over.
Then, the hotel is really family friendly. Nothing wrong about that but not really something my mother and I were looking for. Directour didn't really mention it and even if the kids were fine, we wanted something more for adults. So if you are on your honeymoon or want some peace, you might not enjoy it.
Then, the restaurant... not sure where to start here. The food was quite good and varied which is great. However, each time we walked into this restaurant, we just wanted to leave. The service is simply awful and it is so big and noisy that it doesn't give you a friendly, relaxing vacation feel. We had breakfast and diner included so we wanted to try it but ended up going to Tavernas in the village or somewhere else because it was soooo much more enjoyable. I am not sure why the staff at this hotel is so bad but they don't make you feel welcome. Same at the reception or each time we asked for something (and we didn't ask much)... they make you feel as if you bug them.
The Internet was very difficult to catch and didn't work at all in our room (i was able to get the one from the other hotel on the other side of the road though... looks like they could figure out how to setup an network much better over there). I had to go out close to the pool each time I wanted to connect or talk to my husband in the US... super annoying and I would expect the internet to work very smoothly everywhere in a "5" stars hotel...
Finally the bar: they have nice chairs and sofas outside to enjoy an evening cocktail... unfortunately, you have to wait 30 minutes and call someone to be served... we went to the bar twice and it was a frustrating experience each time (once before dinner and once after)... so much for a relaxing evening drink...

Positives:
Western Crete is gorgeous and much less built up than the rest of the island so it was definitely a great recommendation from Directours to send us to this part of the island.
The rooms are very nice, large and super clean. Beds are very comfortable too.
The food at the restaurant is really good (if only you could feel welcome there...)
The pool is impressive and super clean. Loved the look of the glass bottom... very nice work on it. However... the beach and nature around were so nice that we were always out and only used the pool twice in 7 days. They close it at 8 which is way too early, i think.

Bottom line:
If you have a family and like staying around a nice hotel and don't mind poor service, the Avra imperial is great. But, if you like nature, want to try the nice beaches around, go hiking and see what real life is like in Crete, just don't go there and rent an apartment in a village. People in Crete are wonderful and the island is amazing.

Room Tip: Don't pay additional $$$ for a room with sea view... the view is really not that great and not w...

We just spent a grate holiday on Crete. This hotel is really fantastic: modern design, spacious rooms nice furniture. Elegant SPA center, very nice outdoor swimming pools. One of them with a glass walls. Peaceful place, even there were a lot of families with young children. The food was great, and the waiters are so friendly and helpful! You have an impression that a complete staff is at your disposal 24 hours able to answer all your requests. Gym could be with more equipment. There are missing some things. Sometimes you need to wait more then 20 min. to do cardio on the machine.
Hotel is just quite far out from nearest towns. Almost in the middle of nowhere.
If you like active holiday as we do you need rent a car . Or you can put yourself in FANTASTIC ANIMATION TEAM's hands. Steven, Roberto, Ania and Sandy are doing grate job with guests of different ages. They are making a lot of fun organizing different games and sport activities . Participating in this you will fill the time is running. It's a pity of course, but you will enjoy. Also they took a care about guests' evening entertainment. Disco for kids, show time for adults, a lot of music and dance...It completed our impressions and made the holiday unforgettable especially to my son VELJKO ...THANKS to everybody and just go a had!

The Avra Imperial Hotel is everything you want for an excellent holiday. The Hotel, newly built and super modern is spotless. The Customer Service is superb with well trained staff who have just the right touch of helpfulness and efficiency coupled with the happy-go-lucky warmth and friendliness that makes Crete such a popular location. The rooms are ulta-modern with excellent cleaning daily. Really cannot fault this Hotel in any area ... except perhaps, you need to build a toilet block down at the beach area Avra, sneaking into the hotel next door saves a long walk. All in all excellent value for money.
