my husband and I have just returned from a 5 night stay on a very good deal with Groupon, and this diamond of a place, far exceeded our expectations. Beautifully and lovingingly restored, an oasis of calm with fabulous views from every direction. All the staff were lovely, thank you Pasqual, Pamela in Reception and ever helpful Frederico, you helped make this a very special holiday and we will definitely be returning next year. The restaurant food was excellent and the whole place spotless. A real treasure and a real priviledge to stay here.

Room Tip: we stayed in the country suites in a first floor apartment. The views are fantastic.

We stayed here following a deal on Secret Escapes and therefore stayed in a superior room for just £65 a night. The setting is just beautiful, if relatively isolated. A hire car is a must but the surrounding for this hotel are absolutely lovely. Not too far from the main road and therefore many of the Umbrian sites but far enough to feel like you are staying somewhere completely special. The restaurant is nice, although with a limited, different menu every night, and drinks are very reasonably priced - especially the house wine. There is a restaturant at the end of the hotel driveway with a larger choice, more reasonable prices, and a wonderful authentic italian menu but with less views. We were staying in a superior room which was lovely, if slightly shabby around the edges. Our terrace overlooked the stunning surroundings and the atmosphere is good. The pool is small but south facing but by far the best feature of this hotel is the bar/restaurant terrace overlooking the Umbrian countryside. The view is truly special - sitting here in the evening sipping on an italian 'spritz' is what all holidays should be like. The breakfast is a continental spread - excellent if you like pastries but with limited other choice. By far the best feature of this hotel is the waiting/bar/forever present staff. They are there for anything you could require and really do make sure that you dont have to worry about anything! Overall a beautiful holiday in a wonderful location.

Room Tip: There are a number of rooms at the back of the hotel with their own terraces overlooking the country...

My friend and I took our chances on a Groupon Getaway to Relais Resort for a week. The Week included 4 cooking classes and all meals and several excursions. I can't say enough about what a fantastic time we had and how exceptional all of the staff was at Relais. From the time the hotel owner Pasqual and the Restaurant manager Giacomo met us at the Rome airport to transport us to the hotel, we were treated like royalty. Simone the chef, along with Giacomo and Pamela made our cooking classes not only a great learning experience, but also a very festive event. It was like we had several of our own private parties with them. Also, the hotel is absolutely gorgeous, sitting on top of a hill overlooking the Italian countryside. The outdoor dining area was most enjoyable. On our excursions, Giovanna and Pamela went out of their way to make our experience memorable. The entire staff at the hotel bend over backwards to make sure all the guests are taken care of with the utmost care and hospitality. If you are looking for an ideal place for a small intimate wedding, this is your place. They have a beautiful chapel right on the property, a truly idyllic setting for a wedding.

If you are looking for a beautiful setting, great food and customer service, and a good time, please give Relais a try! It was truly a vacation of a lifetime for me.

a million thanks to the staff at Relais!

The resort location and views are exactly as others have stated, terrific. The average traveler without a vehicle might actually feel a little stranded as the nearest town was about a 20 minute ride. Overall the staff was very good, no shortage of hospitality. The wait staff was terrific, friendly and engaging. The dining experience was good, although not a five star, there was a good variety and some of the meals like the lasagna were close to unbelievably good. As part of our cooking class we interacted with Simone the head chef and the restaurant manager Giacomo, who both proved to be exceptional. The class was great fun and we enjoyed the activities. Our tour guide Pamela was another staff member who really made a positive difference during our stay. She was very knowledgeable and spoke English very well giving us insights into the local community. Ok, time for couple of things that could be improved, starting with the A/C....weak at best, on hot days it had all it could do to maintain a 75-78 degree room, the window screens were not an option as they had seen better days. Overall the rooms were satisfactory but they could use a little maintenance to raise the overall rating level. This was our first trip to Italy and it was a positive experience overall.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a terrace, a nice pleasant location to have a cocktail and a few local treats be...

Relais il canalucchio where do I start. We arrived here a day late due to travel issues and on approach thought WOW! What a stunning location and the hotel is beautiful. We found reception which is well signposted and checked in. If thats what you can call it! We were asked for our passports and shown up to our room! No welcome hope you enjoy your stay or info on facilities or even where breakfast is served. No offer with luggage which we had to haul up 3 flights of stairs ourselves being as its an old building with no lift understandably. Not a good start!! The restaurant is ok. Food is ok not terrible but not inspiring and my girlfriend being vegetarian was told they would make her a veggie lasagne the 2nd night to be served a bolognese one!!! The one shining light however were all the waiting staff who were cheerful and couldnt do enough to help. The communal areas are spotless and well kept shame the same cant be said about our room. Torn shabby beadspread. Mesh screen torn stuck back up with gaffa tape! Bath that leaked or might of been the toilet judging by the smell of it. The floor was obviously not hoovered all week and although I dont go away to watch tv advertising a skybox with 100s of chanels and getting just the local terrestrial ones. False advertising anyone?? Breakfast was good with a good selection regularly topped up by the helpful waiting staff. The pool area was great to relax and immaculate. This is no 4star by english standards at all. Upon checking out we were met with the same disinterested attitude no how was your stay safe journey home. Im sorry I thought this was a hotel that provided a service??? Not that paying guests were a hinderance and can get out asap. I fear this place trades off the fact it is beautiful and is in a stunning location. Therefore will always be busy because of this. Shame most of the staff dont really give two hoots and arent afraid to let u know with their demeanor. Id much prefer to stay over the road where we had 2 excellent meals and were made to feel at home and at ease. If like us you go out and about exploring on holiday this is a great place to leave and come back to in a evening. Wouldnt recommend tho for a holiday and was an expensive basecamp for us leaving with a dissapointed taste in our mouths. If it wasnt for the guys in the restaurant a 2 star rating wouldnt have been off the cards!!

You won't find anything like this anywhere else. A small medieval village converted into a hotel on the top of a mountain. The views from the terrace and the dining area are gorgeous. Perfect sunsets. The pools are well maintained and feel luxurious in this setting. The rooms are of ample size and the staff is very friendly. The only reason I am not giving the hotel 5 stars is due to the lack of wifi in the rooms. We had to sit out in the hall or go to the main Hall to get wifi, which was inconvenient when trying to research what we were going to do the next day. Other than that, this is a beautiful hotel and for the price, a bargain. I highly recommend this hotel!!

Room Tip: Ask for a higher room with a terrace facing the valley. These also have AC and a good breeze at nigh...

This is a unique hotel, which was rebuilt from an old hill top village. There is a fabulous view from the terrace and dining areas which are hard to beat. The pools are large enough to enjoy, and there is a nice quiet space for sunbathing.
We had a lovely comfortable spacious room in one of the stone side buildings, with a little balcony overlooking the countryside. Plenty of hanging and drawer space. Lovely big bathroom, but a rubbish shower over the bath, which was a bit naff... and should really be updated!
My only room "niggle" was that it faced south and the aircon was not working properly, and was not much more use than an electric fan. It was very hot at the end of July and I was most uncomfortable at times. We did mention it, but were told that none of the rooms had "aircon" as such, so we just kept shutters and blinds shut while we were out.
Wifi not available in most areas, and the best signal was in reception bar area.
The food was excellent and we ate our evening meals there....very romantic setting, watching the sunset go down over the hills. Enjoyed Giacomo's humour in the restaurant.
Couldn't fault the staff.... very helpful and courteous. Would happily come again at a cooler time of year.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Relais Il Canalicchio stands like a small gem inset into the summit of a hill. The picturesque town built around the Castello di Poggio, which dates to the 10th-11th centuries, dominates the town with its imposing tower and a splendid little church close to the vineyards and olive groves at the centre of the lush Umbrian countryside. The luxury Relais has almost completely remodeled and enclosed the town of Canalicchio, an intact and resplendent oasis of peace, where only the twittering of birds interrupts the relaxing stillness. Inside, the historic and rural origins of the place are obvious; it still has its apparent castle-like structure and boasts an enormous and exquisite millstone, the old press and some lovely arches, evoking the enchanting atmosphere and charm of times gone by. ... more   less
