This is an excellent hotel in the centre of Mals, a pretty village at the head of the Venosta Valley.

The hotel has clearly been recently refurbished, and to a very high standard. Our room had a lovely balcony with a fabulous view of Mount Ortler, at 12,800 ft the highest mountain in the eastern alps.

The room was very comfortable with top quality down duvets and pillows and all of the staff were very friendly.

There was a very good breakfast and a lovely 5 course dinner for €20 each.

Highly recommended.

Room tip: Book a room with a view of the mountains.

After travelling all day from Chur, in Switzerland, via Klosters, then putting our car onto a train, to be conveyed for 20kms under the Alps, and then driving, in snow, over the Ofenpass, in the Swiss National Park, we arrived at Hotel Tyrol, in the beautiful little village of Mals, just on dark.

We were able to park our car right in front of the hotel, which was a real bonus!

Upon entering the premises, I was greeted by the owner, who was so warm, friendly and lovely, that I, immediately, knew we were going to enjoy our stay at this establishment! Although the owner could only speak and understand a very small amount of English, this did not impede the welcome we received.

This hotel is seriously of a high standard! The architecture, the design, the attention to detail, the presentation, the cleanliness, the towels, the bed linen, the curtains...I could go on and on.....everything is excellent!

After conveying our luggage in the lift, we arrived at the door of Room No.3, which is situated at the front of the building, on the first floor. When we opened the door, we were totally amazed! The walls were constructed of three materials - stone blocks, cut in either squares or rectangles, of different sizes, all arranged to create a striking wall feature; beautiful grained timber; and the most unusual multi-toned rough concrete panel, situated above the bed head, which is illuminated by a concealed light, to create maximum effect. The large bedhead is made from brown suede, and the bedside tables are upholstered in rich chocolate brown leather. The door handles on the beautiful wooden wardrobe doors, are made from leather. The curtains.....very classy....two-toned patterned velvet....just stunning! The doona covers are floral, complementing the colours already featured in the room. In stating all of this, at no time did we view the room as being 'over-done'. It just oozed quality, craftsmanship, and exhibited the designer's creative mind and skills, who, it turns out, is the owner's son.

The bathroom just has to be seen to be believed! The walls and floor are made from dark grey slate, except for one wall....it is made from concrete, and is painted a deep red colour, which, with the aid of the room's subtle lighting, creates a very stunning look. The handbasin appears to be carved from a block of granite, or something similar, and sits on a bench constructed of grained timber. The taps and accessories are of a very high standard. The walk-in shower offers two water flow options.....either coming from the shower head attached to the wall, or from a large square shower head, situated in the ceiling. The shower is tastefully illuminated by three blue coloured downlights.

The view from our bedroom window of the village's church, historic relics, and nearby houses, all with the stunning backdrop of snow-covered mountains for as far as the eye could see, was very picturesque! However, when we opened the door that lead out to our own private balcony, the view appeared to be even more closer and breathtaking!

We did not dine in-house during our stay, as, due to the language barrier, we could not ascertain what the menu consisted of each evening. That, for us English speakers, was the only negative associated with the establishment. In writing this, I must state that the German-speaking chef did everything possible, as did the hotel's owner, to explain to us what was on the menu. However, as I said, the language barrier was too great, and we just could not work out what type of meat and menu selections were on offer.

The breakfast each morning was excellent! There was a good range of cereals, juice, cold meats, cheeses, breads and pastries available, as well as boiled eggs cooked to order. The coffee was great, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere in the breakfast room was lovely.

We were a little sad to leave this beautiful hotel, run by such a lovely and hospitable family.

We will definitely, at some point in the future, return to Hotel Tyrol, in the beautiful little village of Mals! We very much look forward to it!

We stayed for one night at the Hotel Tyrol. It's set well in the village with plenty of onsite parking. The friendly staff greeted us and showed us to our room. Even though we had booked a twin room, it was set up as a double. The staff quickly added another set of linen so that it would work for us. A buffet dinner was offered which we declined as we wanted to explore until later in the evening. The room was very clean and the bed comfortable. The bath was spacious with a great shower - lots of pressure! The breakfast was amazing with lots of variety and choices. Highly recommended.
