“Gaudy to the point of pain, very expensive, great pool though!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2011

Stayed there for a small conference nearby a few months ago.
The hotel as a building is very professionally remodelled. The gardens and pools are absolutely gorgeous--I mean gorgeous.
Service was not bad, but not great.
The main problem is that inside of this place is so tackily done: it looks like the owner won the Euromillions and had always wanted to spend enough euros to bail out Greece on naked girl art (with a few quirky pieces thrown in for credibility).
I mean, really, a solid gold Kate Moss sculpture?
And all the pieces were so crowded together that they all lost considerable aesthetic value.

This is truly one of the most beautiful hotels/villas my family and I have ever been to. We have stayed at many 5 star resorts and this was truly the best. The villa itself and the grounds are a feast for your eyes. Everywhere you turn, there are beautiful art pieces to look at, both inside the villa, in the guest rooms and on the grounds. The landscaping is exceptional, esp. the driveway leading to the front of the hotel with the large fountain at the end.

Although the property itself is magnificent & enough to make one's stay here enjoyable, what made our stay special & memorable was the friendliness of the staff. Each & every one of the staff that we encountered was friendly, helpful, accommodating & eager to please. We were made to feel welcomed right from the time we drove up to the hotel to the time we left. They knew our names, knew what we liked to drink with our meals & had that ready for us every time without us asking, knew how we liked our room done etc. It was this extra attention to detail that distinguished this villa from many other 5 star hotels & resorts we had previously stayed at.

The room we had was beautifully furnished with unique pieces, though not very functional if you want to do any paperwork. However, this is not a business hotel, so it's understandable that it isn't designed for such use. The wireless internet (which was free for us as a Leader's Club member) was fast & reliable. Housekeeping was good. The entire property was kept very clean & well groomed.

Breakfast (which was included with our room) was extensive with many hot and cold items to choose from. Even if we showed up late, the staff was more than happy to accommodate us & did not make us feel rushed. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was nice. The menu is not really designed for kids but the chefs were more than happy to "cook to order" to make our daughter happy. Wine tasting in the old cellar was lovely!

The free shuttle to Verona (20 min away) was a nice service. The pool, spa, workout area was all very lovely.

We stayed for 5 nights at this Villa and did not want to leave! We will definitely stay here again & would recommend it for anyone who's looking for an exceptional holiday experience.

This is not just a hotel. It is a contemporary art museum. I say this as one of the main drawing points for me, as I loved the place and the approach they took to design, but it is definitely not for everyone and could run afoul of certain sensibilities.

The hotel sits about 30 minutes outside of Verona accessible through a complimentary and comfortable minivan that picks you up at the city center near the Arena. The 30 minutes may seem far, but you are rewarded with beautiful countryside surrounding the rather large grounds of the hotel with vineyards stretching out into the distance past the property.

The grounds are beautiful. There is an extensive garden in the back complete with a swimming pool offering stunning views of the area and secluded, hidden spots that challenge you to find them and reward you with privacy. The front of the hotel also has beautiful gardens that run parallel along the driveway that offers a dramatic view of the hotel as you arrive.

The amenities in the hotel are extensive. The Turkish bath is incredible. Warm, comfortable, and very well appointed. In addition there is a shower and sauna. We have seen these in other hotels, but none set up in such a creative manner. In addition.

We dined in the restaurant one day and the food was easily one of the best I had in Italy, and that is saying a lot. There are not many options since the hotel is secluded. However, I spent the entire evening sampling some of the fine wines available and working my way through many delicious dishes. Breakfast was similarly extensive and very well done.

The staff were phenomenal. I have been burned by poor service in this country so many times to the point where it sometimes seems to be something of little importance, but the staff here went above and beyond. They spoke English very well, and were more than happy to assist with any query and in some cases were proactive to ensure the future leg of my trip after the hotel went just as smoothly as my time in Byblos.

Finally, the art. It is everywhere. The smallest details seem to get the most attention. I spent a far amount of my time there happily wondering the halls to uncover new secrets of the hotel. Some of the pieces are dramatic, and would no doubt be considered shocking to some, and perhaps tacky to some, but I thought the hotel is incredibly well appointed and appreciate the ingenuity placed in the design.

Main sticking point was the charge for internet for wired at their computer and wireless in the room. This seems like an anachronism, and irritates me everytime hotels charge, but clearly they are not alone in this practise.

Overall, this was a bit of a risk. I changed my trip to build a night into this location, and was initially a bit concerned about the distance from Verona, but it was a great decision and a highlight of my trip in Italy.

Located a few kilometres from Verona in an old area, the hotel is a villa set on a beautifully landscaped hillock. The driveway from the main road through beautiful gardens leads to a fully functional ancient fountain.

The interiors of the hotel are full of contemporary art with paintings, photos, sculptures and arty pieces of furniture.

There is another garden to the rear and the swimming pool is in an area surrounded by a lot of greenery. The rooms themselves are an extension of the lobby - arty and beautiful.

The views from outside the front lobby give a commanding view of the surrounding countryside. There are lots of lovely areas to explore nearby including the numerous vineyards. From just a couple of kilometres behind the hotel you can get fabulous views of Verona. Lake Garda is also a short drive away and very easy accessible from the hotel.

The staff is friendly and helpful but not too many of them speak English - so thats a problem and there is a very limited menu to eat something during the day outside the meal times.

We stayed at this hotel when we visited the Verona Stone show and all of the hotels in town were sold out, so we were directed to this one by American Express.

The grounds are lovely as is the vills, but as far as I am concerned the loveliness stops there. There is all sorts of sexually oriented modern art in the interior public spaces and in the rooms. It is uncomfortable for those of us who do not stay there by choice. We had a large but bizarre suite. It looked like something from Alice and Wonderland....odd shaped furniture with light fixtures coming out of the upholstery and references to sex on the carpets. The piece de resistance was when I noticed what appeard to be a small red camera portal in my bathroom...definitely not a smoke alarm!

I went to my colleagues bathroom to investigate and discovered the same identical item in her bathroom. When I pointed it out to her and asked her what she thought it was, she shrieked and said, :"It's a camera! Get me out of here!" We checked out immediately.

So, if you don't mind being photographed, I guess the place is okay. The breakfast is good and the grounds are nice.

Dear TitanV,

Thanks for taking time to post a review on Tripadvisor!

We regret to hear that you don’t like the style of our hotel. The Byblos Art Hotel Villa Amistà is one of the most important art hotel in the world and in fact we host more of 100 pieces of contemporary art of 50 different artists. The hotel is reinterpreted as a permanent exhibition of contemporary art. We are of course aware that our style can not meet everybody’s taste.

On the other hand we want to assure you that we don’t have any cameras in our bathrooms and the red light you have noticed is just the fire alarm mandatory according to the Italian law.

If you need some more information, don’t hesitate to contact us and we will be more than happy to assist you.

We visited Byblos Art Hotel, this August, for the second time with friends and we feel we have to write this review to thank the people for their kindness and friendly attitude, which makes us feel like home. The hotel is located just outside Verona, in the middle of the vineyards of Valpolicella area, which makes it an extremely relaxing and tranquil place and, at the same time, the perfect spot for visiting Verona and other cities and areas of Veneto and Lombardy, such as Vicenza, Padova, Madova, Lake Garda etc. We will not talk about the decor, since so much has been already said; it is simply fabulous. People at the reception desk but especially at the restaurant are very warm, friendly, accomodating and discrete. We always had a nice chat during breakfast or dinner. When we asked whether we could be told something about the place, the lady at the front desk spent half an hour telling us the history of the estate, the background of the present owner and to answer any question we had while she was showing to us the Presidential and the Medini Suites. We have been both times very well served and we and our friends thank the staff of Villa Amista for that. See you all next August!
