“Great Hotel, Great Location - with benefit of the Atlantic breeze!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2013

This is a very good hotel that frankly should be busier but would appear to suffer from poor advertising. I say this because what is on offer here is about as good as it gets in Tobago, the hotel itself is new (two years old!) and in a great location, it is only a 15 minute cab ride from the airport and is accessed via security gates through a wonderful golf course.

It is on the Atlantic side of the island so the waters are rougher than on the Caribbean side but the advantage is a constant breeze which is a welcomed benefit in the heat of the day plus you get the soothing sound of the rolling waves which we found very relaxing.

It is very clean, the rooms are spacious, ours had a lovely 40" flat screen TV, the beds are comfortable and whilst there is no mini-bar, there is a fridge for keeping your own drinks cool. Each room is also equipped with an iron and ironing board and a hairdryer. The hotel is right on the ocean so you get a wonderful sea view from the room and that soothing sound of the waves as you sit on the balcony.

The lay-out of the pool area is wonderful with ornate bridges leading to an area of decking. The pool bar can also be accessed from the pool itself and has wonderful views of a beautiful bay on either side.

On the whole we thought the food was of a very good standard particularly in the main buffet restaurant where it was fresh and very well presented and you have the option to sit outside if you wish though we found the air conditioning a welcome respite from the tropical heat during the day. As with any Caribbean restaurant if you do sit outside for breakfast or lunch you may be visited by a number of the local birds and a fun twist here is the provision of water pistols to deter the more persistent and daring of our feathered friends. In addition to the buffet the occasional barbeque was laid on with a chef on hand to ensure your specific needs were catered for.

We were on the “all-inclusive” package which proved to be very good value as this not only included all meals and the usual soft drinks but also some of the spirits and most of the cocktails, and whilst the wine was restricted to the "house" wine only this proved to be a very acceptable merlot and I was told by other guests that the house white was also very good. Another unexpected bonus was that the one week all inclusive package also included two vouchers for the non-buffet restaurants (of which there are two) but we used both of our vouchers at "Karina" which was excellent.

There have been many negative comments made on Trip Advisor about the need for more training of the staff at this hotel but this was not our experience so perhaps this was an issue early on that has since been rectified. Or perhaps it was because the hotel was far from busy during our stay. The fact is that we felt the friendliness and competence of the staff were one of the stand-out features of the holiday with certain members of staff who more than went that extra yard and could not have done more to make us feel welcome and look after our needs. In particular Jaleel on the Bellman's desk, Hans in the cocktail bar, Hazel on the front desk and Kervin the omelette chef who were all stars in our eyes to name but a few.

So what were the negatives? If you are not fans of lying in the sun and are not a golfer then perhaps you will find there is not enough to do at this particular resort unless you opt to go on some of the many excursions available as it is in a relatively isolated position. They have a few shops on the premises but whilst their stock is of good quality there are only three of them. (These mainly offer local crafts, jewellery, artworks, swimwear, wraps, polo shirts, tee shirts etc.). However the capital "Scarborough" is only a short cab ride away though don’t expect an array of designer shops here either. In terms of catering for the higher demands of the modern day holiday maker this Island is in its infancy. Part of it’s appeal we felt.

There is a well equipped modern fitness room and ample routes for joggers and you can also take advantage of cycles at the bell desk which are free for hotel residents to ride around the resort. If you are a higher handicapped golfer take plenty of golf balls as the pro shop only stock Pro V 1's sporting the hotel logo which are very expensive and it is a tough course which will test and penalise the more wayward golfer for sure. NB. There is a driving range and they do have left and right handed clubs for hire.

Some of the rooms are a long way from the hotel lobby so if walking any distance is a problem for you then you should specify this when booking.

We felt they could have had more in the way of entertainment in the evenings although we made some good friends during our stay and so we put the two hotel bars to good use and even went to the weekly jamboree at “Bucoo Bay” known as "Sunday School" held on most Sunday evenings throughout the year with lots of entertainment on offer including an excellent live steel band, dancing and barbeques which was great fun and is to be recommended.

All in all we had a wonderful week at this resort and would have no hesitation recommending it to anyone contemplating Tobago as a holiday destination. We just hope it survives in the current recessionary climate and feel it certainly deserves to.

(We are a married couple in our early/mid 50's).

Dear Guest,

we are thrilled to see that you have rated us with five out of five and would like to thank you for your time, reviewing our hotel in such detail. It is great to hear that you liked the location and lay out of the property, the pools and the cleanliness of the hotel room as well as its equipment.

Your comments on the food are highly appreciated as we believe a good cuisine is an important part in a great vacation experience. As for the birds you mentioned, the supply of water pistols has been quite a success so far.

Regarding other guest comments, customer experience differs a great deal between individuals. We strive to offer a great vacation experience with high standards but in the meantime we appreciate the chance to improve our services when shortcomings are pointed out.

We have forwarded your thanks to Jaleel, Hans, Hazel and Kervin and we are happy that they made a difference to you during your visit.

Looking forward to welcoming you soon again!

Stayed at the hotel for one night on holiday with a friend. This hotel used to be a Hilton and it's clear that the new owners made alot of investment because the hotel is very beautiful. Great rooms, amazing pool area, loved it.

The customer service was generally very good however the bell boy can be a little slow at times but generally are very polite once they attend to you.

The food is great, breakfast was amazing and drinks were great. Staff were all engaging and friendly.

There is a spa within the grounds, gives great massages and is reasonably priced.

We stayed in this hotel for 5 nights a few weeks ago, I had read some dodgy reviews about it but being the best hotel on the island we stayed here, We had the one bedroom suit which was quite nice.

The service was disgraceful apart from the front desk, most of the staff where doing you a favour, the first day we got there we had lunch and every time i had call a waitress over they walked off while i was talking to them so at a later point further on the holiday when i got sick and tired of this i actually brought the waitress back and said to her i am taking to you why did you walk off and she just starred at me. The breakfast was average to bad, the fine dining restaurant was really nice but at £100 for a couple it should be and the room service food was sub standard. When the staff where polite and friendly it was like a shock because you could not believe you where being spoken to in a nice manor. I saw that the maid had thrown rubbish left on the balcony on the floor below which i just could not believe and this just stayed until i left. Oh yes then their was the dead cow on the beach which washed up outside our balcony on the beach at 3pm and was still in the same place the next morning when i left at 11am.

The plot the hotel is on is really nice and i enjoyed sitting by the pool and dipping in the sea, it is such a shame as this could be a great hotel if they cared about their customers and if they where nice they might also get tipped instead of putting a 10% service charge on everything which is obviously the reason they don't care!

Dear Guest,

thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback and highlighting some operational weaknesses. We have taken into account your service related comments and passed them on to our Training Department for immediate review and action. We have taken note of your fine dining comments also.

Regrettably, two cows were washed up on our beach during your stay. "A first time event in the Resort's 10 year history" and therefore, local authorities and the Environmental Department needed time to reach a conscencus on how it should be removed from the beach. This has finally been resolved and in the unfortunate event there should be a re-occurence, a plan is now in place for immediate removal.

We are dissappointed with the ranking and would look forward to an opportunity to prove to you, that we could do much better. Once again, thanks for your feedback.

We have just returned from a 2 week honeymoon here.
To be honest we had a very relaxing time and would return, though maybe only a week next time, all will be revealed. We are not a fussy picky couple who complain about every incident and this review is an honest assessment. The hotel is lovely. Set between the shore and a golf course. No noisy neighbours coming out of bars at 3am, just what you want on a quiet holiday.
The hotel reception are and walkways are clean and well looked after. The rooms are very comfortable and very clean and that does include the bathroom. The only downside with all the rooms is that there is a small window next to the bed, although you can not see through it because of the frosted glass and a blind, it is adjacent to next doors front door. So every time anyone comes in or out, you know about it. The rooms were cleaned everyday and fresh towels left by very cheerful and polite staff.
The food is very good, and the pool area is delightful, the hotel and staff as a whole are great. There is an underlying frustration with the whole place, and that is customer service.
Speaking to several people at the hotel, it is clear that they are really trying to get this place up and running. They really have to concentrate on the paying guest. One manager spent his day, walking around the pool and public areas watching, making notes and questioning staff. Now once did he stop and ask any guest " how's it going" or " Hi I'm whoever". On the managers cocktail evening, the managers stood around talking amongst themselves, the guests had to approach them. The staff haven't got a chance until the management start thinking about the guests first. Before I go off on a wild rant, which is not necessary, here is the pro's and con's.

Hotel: Lovely Hotel and Setting Staff: Very friendly and willing, need to be told to look after customer before having that conversation with your mate or bottling up. Pool: Lovely pools but never saw anyone cleaning it. Swim up bar: Not that good and staff keep wandering off into main building, leaving it unattended. I didn't use it but watched many people getting annoyed that no one there.

As I have said, its a great week away but, management please, this could be so much more.
People are paying a hell of a lot of money to stay here, that will drop off very soon unless things get corrected.

Myself and my parter stayed in Magdalena Grand for 2 days. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with our stay in the resort. We enjoyed the pool area and the room was clean and well decorated, however the customer service, in our opinion, was quite bad and needs a lot of improvement. The reasons below explain:

- We wanted to eat in Salaka Grill. It was 16:55 when the waitress came to our table and told us that we cannot be served as the restaurant was closed now. We spoke to the manager later on (I think a German man) who told us that the restaurant is closing everyday at 17:00 as it needs to be prepared for dinners. We told the manager that it was before 17:00 when we arrived at the restaurant. The manager did not show any understanding of where we were coming from and was quite rude. He could do a refresher course in dealing with customers because his performance with us was quite poor.

- We decided afterwards that we will try dining in Kalina Restaurant. We were told that the restaurant was overbooked. As in-house guests we were disappointed that we could not dine in the restaurant, especially after paying a lot of money to stay in the resort at first place.

- Eventually we ate in Robinson Crusoe Bar. The waitresses were very polite and the food was good however nobody came to collect our plates or ask if we wanted another drink despite bar being quite empty and quiet. After about half an hour we decided to spend the rest of the evening inside where we could order our drinks easier.

- The next day we were sitting in the Lil Nylon Pool Bar and similar situation happened to the one described in Salaka Grill. At 17:40 the bargirl informed people at the bar that the drinks that she was serving at that time were the last drinks of the evening as she had to prepare the bar for closing (closing time suppose to be 18:00).

- The same bargirl was preparing my cocktail - she was cutting pineapple while dealing with cash; she also consumed some of the pineapple herself before serving my cocktail.

- I sent an email to the resort's manager on the 7th of March; today is the 21st and I still did not receive any reply.

Very poor...

I really wish I could write more enthusiastic review and I want to be kind but... Having just spent 5 nights at the Magdalena I am feeling rather nonplused about it. It is a bit neither here nor there/ Faulty Towers ish and could definitely be much better. As for this whole "Chill out, you're on the Caribbean" thing, I'm not buying that either. I am still in the Caribbean on another Island and the service is amazing everywhere.

The Magdalena is a lovely resort and I do think their 4 star rating is about right based on the overall look and setting of the resort. The beach and pool areas are beautiful.

We booked a 1 bedroom, sea view suite with a jacuzzi on the balcony. The room was very nice, lovely huge bed, en-suite with bath and shower, separate lounge and another shower room. The first room we were offered was on the ground floor and you could not see the sea. It also smelt very badly of damp and mould. They moved us straight away and our room on the 2nd floor 227/228 was perfect. We paid £3-400 extra for a jacuzzi on the balcony which was well worth it. It is unfilled so you fill it yourself with fresh water (fills surprisingly quickly), it has a shower hose too so you can bath and wash you hair, definitely exceeding our expectations.

The problem was the lack of service. It isn't everyone, some of the staff are very nice but it is terribly hit and miss. We were there on a b & b basis and the staff at the pool restaurant and at breakfast (on the most part) made us feel like we were putting them out terribly by requesting a drink. The waitress at breakfast was pretty scary and rather rude, walking off while we we were ordering coffee etc. Having said that, on the last day our breakfast waitress was like a ray of sunshine. Like I said, it's all a bit hit or miss. We ate lobster in the a la carte restaurant, which was very good, as was the service but when we walked past our table the next morning, it still hadn't been cleaned.

It is a lovely place and it was all fine. Our room cost £1200 for 5 days which was about right for what we had. The bottom line is we would not return. I am sitting in St Lucia on my last day of this trip already desperate to return but I would not hurry back to Tobago, based on our experience of the Magdalena Grand. It could be such a great place if the staff were trained to greet you with a smile on their faces and treat you like a guest.

After an exhausting few days in Trinidad for Carnival we flew to Tobago for a luxury break and to assess the hotel for an upcoming family reunion. Beautiful hotel, good location, word of advice if you are arriving late in the evening make sure you eat because after 10.30pm you will not find any fod available in the hotel!! Not cool! Having comlained to the GM about this he advised that if you are arriving late, please contact them and they will ensure something is made available to you on your arrival. The pools at this hotel are great -- 1 main pool with swim up bar and 2 satellite pools which were rarely used. So we had one to ourselves! The white sandy beach is right there in front of your hotel door. All rooms are sea view so dont be fooled by agents saying we will upgrade you to a sea view...! The breakfast room is a tad on the small size and the options are not great in my opinion, but they will do what they can to help. They have a kids club. One observation which i was a little disappointed by is the choice of music in the 'bar'. I was in the Caribbean and therefore expected to hear Caribbean music or music of that genre, instead I found myself listening to rock and pop from the 70s!!! Not amused!! The bar staff were friendly and accomodating. As you will see from my many other reviews, I pay for what i expect and that is customer service, good rooms, good food, pools etc. Oh and watch out - the cleaners may not get around to cleaning your room!! But call them and they will rectify that. Overall this hotel did not let me down. It could do with a few changes but hey it's the Caribbean - they are all about relaxing! A good 4 star hotel with a few niggles. We shall be booking our family reunion there, even if the event manager is yet to get back to us!!!!
