In my opinion, this hotel is perfect for a couple on a romantic getaway. We visited with a small child and found this hotel simply not suited to our needs. The cottage was lovely but very small. For the price we paid, I think there could at least have been fresh things for making coffee and tea available. The items provided were very old and could not be used. We stayed during Carnival and therefore was subjected to two nights of extremely loud music. The owner told us that we were supposed to be informed about this when we booked, however this never happened and we were in for quite an unpleasant surprise. The food at the restaurant was good, but again a bit overpriced.

A word of advice, read all the reviews, both good and bad. The real Acajou experience lies somewhere in the middle.

My daughter Ashley , insisted that she see the leather back turtles lay eggs, so we decided to plan a trip to Grand Riviere Toco and book two self contained houses at Acajou Hotel . At first we were very worried as the accommodation had no air condition or no TV , but to our surprise none of this bothered us as the rooms were clean well designed and was very comfortable and soon we all felt relax and forgot all of stresses.

We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel and the food was great service and staff was so nice and friendly that our families felt like home away from home .

The location was perfect as we were walking distance from the laying turtles, we drove to the light house and we bathe at Shark river .

All all time we felt safe and comfortable on the property.

We stayed one night with friends that are living in Port of Spain. Our main goal was to see the leatherback turtles nesting on the nearby beach. It's in a very remote area which is unbelievably natural and forested. Upon arrival we were shown to our room which was an elevated cottage with wide sliding doors opening on to a private deck. Complimentary Ice cold drinks were brought to our room which was a nice touch. The room was a nice size with a couch, rear deck with chairs and a hammock. The staff were very pleasant and the owner was eager to assist us. Dinner was served in an open air dining room, very traditional Trinidad ambience. Our hostess arranged to have someone take us over in the evening to see the turtles nesting. A very unique experience.

Room Tip: It's a great place to stay if you're there to see the turtles.

This is a great retreat...laid back, simple, comfortable and pure relaxation. Great food available at resort restaurant...bake and buljol not to be missed as is the fresh fish for lunch. Definitely worth a visit or 2 or 3!

Peaceful getaway that slows you to reverse. Acajou, takes me back to a time when its surroundings were the exclusive pervue of the elite. On arrival Christina personified the expected service, followed by Tenicia, Antonia and Leslie who in my opinion exemplified an enthusiasm to please the guests.

The six cottages are discretely placed to afford guests relative audio and visual privacy. Set aonly a few yards from the beach while also near the riverside, these wodden cottages allow an escape from one's urban reality. There is no need for air condition as the cooling ventilation is provided by a large roof mounted white fan at the apex of the ceiling, supplemented by screened jalousies and constant sea breeze. Humming birds whizzing about, all manner of flora to Hot water shower is available after a long trek on the beach or a drive to Shark river or Matelot bay.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available onsite with Antonia preparing a tasty coconut and lemon grass sauce that made the king fish and basmati rice come alive on my tastebuds. Home made coconut bake with saltfish buljol is typical enticing Trini breakfast cuisine and appropriate for the hotel's locale near a fishing depot. Acajou natural yoghurt and the home made bread was of great appeal to my foreign guest. While the Riverside restaurant with its very comfortable locally produced wodded furniture, provides a clear view of the beach but the mozzies come out at night so come prepared.

A few suggestions, an information leaflet should be placed in the cottages telling guests of all available activity, like a beautiful day out on Shark river. Though the available high speed internet works well in cottage two it would be even better if it were easily available in the restaurant also. A greater variety of local cuisine and vegetables should be added to the menu. I would have enjoyed some fried plantain with my king fish. Though more could be done I am sure to add eco-appeal to the ambiance, for me Acajou = Eco. Keep it up.

Simply put I will come again, you all should getaway at Acajou.

Stayed with young kid. Cottages are great. Wood, Charming. Clean. No A/C... but that's fine with fans. Lots of Mosquitos. Bring repellent. Babybed available. Excellent.
There is not much to do, other than enjoying the cottages, no pool, no nothing. Very relaxed, but can get a little dull. Close to beach (with lots of sandflies). When turtels are not around (i.e. off season, place is kind of dead).

Place needs a few touches here and there to get rid of the "still not finished" or "a bit worn" feeling when walking around.

Restaurant was an experience: Nice setting, view on river. Service? I think a few 10-year olds would figure it out the same way. Quote of the (kind & freindly) staff when he brought first dish and we asked what it is "I dont know". Funny. In the end, all came, it it was kind of sweet. But for quality of food (average) , and type of service (amateur), overpriced - even though you get breadsticks and a great tapenade. Maybe was due to fact that we cam in absolute low season.

Worth a visit, but dont expect wonders. We regret not having been there for turtle time... Hotel is literally next to the action, we were told.

I stayed at this resort for a day on June 1,2012 and was happy with my stay. It is next to the beach where tourists gather to watch leather back turtles come on shore to lay eggs at night. It was like staying in the middle of a forest with the birds in the resort area. Rooms are neat. The manager offered us take out breakfast as we had to check out early morning. Price for the room was slightly high at $ 160.00 a night.
