I just stayed at Oarsman for 3 days with a group of friends and whilst not as 'flashy' and touristy as Blue Lagoon next door, the resort has lots of character and friendly staff. Yes the rooms and shared bathrooms for the dorms could do with a freshen up, but the quieter location and more rustic feel is what I was after. Food was simple but good and prices at the bar were reasonable with the rest of Fiji. A selection of activities - fishing, snorkeling, village tours, mountain climbs, tree planting etc. However its not a party island and if you're coming here, its to chill out and relax.

Overall I would recommend this place to you if you were after a budget accommodation option where all your money goes back to the village as opposed to an international company next door, however I wouldn't come here expecting the boutique feel that the Blue Lagoon can offer.

Oarsman's Bay is located on a beautiful beach with a reef (for fantastic snorkelling) right out the front. Another thing I learned later (from expat Aussies) is that the bay is one of the few in the Yassawas where you can swim all day, other bays get too shallow to enjoy for large parts of the day.

Yes the accommodation is rustic but clean (cleaned every day). I was needlessly concerned about the lack of air conditioning in the rooms, the breeze through through the fly wired louvres kept it cool all day and night.

The food was pretty good (but a little more fish on the menu would have been appreciated). The breakfasts consisted of eggs (done a variety of ways to your ordering) and bacon, fresh fruit and cereal. In addition some other choices that changed daily (the banana pancakes were a highlight!). Lunch was a mixture of things including Fijian style curry chicken to fish and chips. As other reviewers have noted, there is not a choice but this is true for all but the high cost resorts in the area, that said there was only one meal that I did not enjoy. Also loved the afternoon cup of tea or coffee at 4pm

As for activities, the Friday night traditional feast and entertainment by the local village was a highlight lots of dancing and laughing by al. We also did the trip to the cave, fishing and fish feeding and snorkelling at Blue Lagoon (the snorkeling was better out the front of our Bure, but still good to see).

As other reviewers have noted this accommodation is small and locally owned, which gives you an opportunity to get to know the locals as well as the guests (who change over most days). The staff are very thoughtful, an example was there was one day where there were only five of us so the lunch table was set up on the beach under a shady tree, where we watched the 12 new guests arrive!

A few tips, take your own snorkelling gear (they have a number of sets for hire at a modest price, but to be safe bring your own) and also bring some snacks and bottled water with you. All in all we enjoyed our three night stay here.

Room Tip: All rooms have a view of the beautiful bay, the beachfront ones are just a bit closer.

We recently stayed at Oarsmans Bay Lodge for 10 days, and would like to say that we had a truly WONDERFUL time there. Absolute paradise, with a beautiful sandy beach and colourful reef right at its doorstep for all day swimming/snorkelling, great walking trails all over the island, warm and welcoming staff, and a great range of activities.

There are lots of negative reviews recently, but they should really be looked at in context- this resort is a locally run resort in a very isolated location, and in the opinion of our group (4 adults and 2 young kids), the staff do a fantastic job. Yes, the rooms are not 5-star, but neither is the price, and they are clean and contain everything you need.

This is a great place to take a family and get a feel for the real Fiji island way of life. We will be back as soon as possible!!!!

Room Tip: The Family Bure was great for our group of 4 adults and 2 children. It is positioned close to the common area, but not too close to be noisy.

Despite being located in an amazing place on a fantastic beach with sublime water and snorkelling I would not recommend Oarsman's Bay Lodge. The rooms are in desperate need of repair and are way below any kind of decent standard. The food was also terrible and often meat was not cooked properly posing a real health threat. There are also absolutely no facilities whatsoever; no beach chairs, amusements or anything for kids or adults. Better to go to the neighbouring resort which is a million times better.

Room Tip: All of them are much of a muchness and not much at all!

I was really disappointed by my stay at Oarsman's Bay. The rooms were not cleaned daily. The place was run down and I left with bed bug bites on my legs. A lizard also landed on my head during the middle of the night. I think a tent would have been a better accommodation. The food was also disgusting. Every meal had mystery bones in it, and I ended up just eating the white rice they served at every meal. There were no beach chairs, only hammocks. The beach and snorkeling however were amazing. I would recommend bringing your own gear, as if you weren't the first in line you most likely had a leaky mask and fins that didn't fit.

Room Tip: Don't stay at this resort.
