“Premiere Beach and Swimming”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2013

Oarsman's Bay Lodge is very relaxing and the beach is superior. My wife and I stayed four nights in one of the "beachfront Bures." They are less than 4 star. They need some repair and maintenance. Lots of little things. The grounds are tidy, but again little things are distracting. There were no annoying insects. The staff are outstanding. They could not be more friendly and accommodating. The meals are a little routine. No fish. The lodge was only about half full which was good for us, but caused the staff to hold back the advertised hot lava rock (in ground) barbecue feast. We thoroughly enjoyed Kava with staff at night. Lots of laughter and music. They love their guitars and ukuleles and they can sing. The best part of everything was the soft pure white sand beach and the nearly 80 degree (F) water temperature. It is a protected bay, so very little wave action. The snorkeling is very special with many fish and beautiful coral gardens right in front of the lodge. We did not find anything equal to this in Fiji. We could not help, but notice the many back packers, so we were the old folks, but very much enjoyed our relaxing stay at this lodge.

I had the pleasure of experiencing the extended family that is Oarsmans Lodge last year...it has taken me this long to stop dreaming about it and write a review!
As a travel agent, I have stayed at alot of gorgeous places in the world...but this little wonder is everything you want in a holiday...unless you want western food with high rise buildings and marble bathrooms with rude staff in which case you wont like it here!

Oni and the family at Oarsmans made us feel welcome from start to finish. They were so accommodating even making me gluten free pancakes of a morning!

They baked my husband and I a cake for my birthday and our anniversary and learnt the words to Happy birthday and even sang an anniversary song!

Then the following day they put us in a boat and dropped us at our own island! when we began to think they werent returning, from a distance a boat pulls up and delivers us a splendid lunch with a bottle of champayne! It was magic!

My mum and her friend came along also for the holiday and mum literally cried when we had to leave...we looked at everyway possible to extend our flights to get a little more of this island paradise.

The rooms are super cute with an amazing view of the beach right from your front door. Ameneties were basic but clean and all you need whilst away.

The food seemed endless and meal times were a feast, the food isnt over the top but fine to eat in between lazing on the beach and sipping cocktails, or a massage, or snorkelling...

Please dont bother coming to this island if you are looking for a luxurious over the top getaway...you wont find it here. But you will find the most authentic traditional place in Fiji based on one of the most amazing beaches you will ever visit with truley loving and generous staff.

I miss Oni and little Dee... I hope Dee is still calling for "Sara" to come and dance with her around the kithen!

Ill be booking my mum to go back after Christmas, sadly im unable to join :-( but ill be back soon enough!

xox

Room Tip: GO the beachfront ..its not much more and the view is amazing!

What a great way to end our trip in Australia and NZ. Such great service and what a beautiful place to wake up! We had 5 days and we enjoyed everyone of them. When you move in, you also move in to this big great family, where everybody is welcome.

Oarsman’s Bay is locally owned and I stayed here for a week and a half and experienced full Fijian family style hospitality. This is the ideal place to simply lay on the beach and relax. There are however also a variety of activities on offer if you want to hike at sunrise, visit the village and hear the sweet voices of the children, explore the caves or cruise around the surrounding islands. The beach is well protected compared to several of the other resorts in the area and there is quite a big variety of sea life to explore on the reef. Volleyball here is much loved past time and fun to join in with the locals as well as guitar singing and kava drinking.

The food here is tasty, plentiful and homely. The rooms are a few years old so don’t expect something brand new. They are however, well spaced out amongst lovely gardens with stunning ocean views from whichever room you choose.

One of the stand outs of this place is the friendly people, who make you feel more than welcome.

Oarsman’s Bay is an amazing piece of Fijian paradise. I have recently returned from my third trip there and am already planning for my next.

My husband and I first went to Fiji in 2010 looking for the perfect place to get married. For us perfect entails all the usual beautiful beach, great snorkelling etc, but most important for us was the people and management of the venue. Oarsman’s Bay is owned by the local community and Chief and run by staff from the village offering the village a source of income and opportunities for the people. For the visitors it offers a rare look into Fijian community, a homely experience that I challenge to be replicated at any other tourist destination within Fiji or internationally. We had found the perfect destination for our wedding!

As a destination aesthetically the approach into Oarsman's Bay is amazing, with one of the best beaches in Fiji, accessible for sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling at both low and high tide – which is very rare in the Yassawas. The lodge itself is set back in the trees, with a huge deck looking out to the water, with the bure’s located on either side of it. The food is home-style cooking, a mix of buffets and three course meals which are delicious. Chef’s home-made bread and cakes can’t be beaten! The rooms are cozy and neat, cleaned daily. They’re not new and modern, but have all the facilities you need, they feel like home. Activities are available if you want them, just ask – the cave trip is fun :-).

As for our wedding in 2011 it was amazing, I couldn't have dreamt a better wedding. Many of the villagers were involved from the dancing and choir to cooking and preparation. We invited 26 guests from Australia and by the end of the night the party would have been nearly 100 as everyone celebrated with us! Chef prepared the most amazing meal of seafood and lovo, which was complimented by plenty of kava, western and Fijian music and lots of Fiji Gold! Our guests have described it as the best wedding ever and it was all thanks to the lovely people of Oarsmans Bay and Nacula.

If you’re looking for polished floor boards, marble bathrooms and hamburgers/pizza/fries don’t bother coming, you’ve missed the point of Oarsman's, Blue Lagoon next door, owned by a consortium of Westerns will suit your needs better.

Oarsmans is a beautiful piece of paradise that is a must for anyone wanting to experience the warmth, friendlies and sense of community that Fiji is advertised for but often falls short on. It will forever be a special place for my husband and I, and somewhere we hope others will take the opportunity to experience and fall in love with, as we and all our friends and family have.

Room Tip: The deluxe bure are lovely, light and airy. If you're looking for a dorm, there is no better vi...

We spent 4 nights at Oarsman's Bay Lodge during our recent Fiji holiday. We stayed there previously in 2005 and enjoyed it so much we had to include it in our 2012 holiday itinerary as well. Fantastic beaches, great snorkelling on the reefs just off the beach, comfortable bures and very friendly staff.

Room Tip: Haven't stayed in the dorm, but bures are good.

We visited this resort in Sept 2012.

Oarsmans Bay Lodge is under new management. Joe, Chief Ratu Epeli's brother, has returned from working with Blue Lagoon Cruises to run Oarsmans and this place is just getting better and better.

Since we were last here, Oarsmans has 2 new chefs and the bures are being updated.

This resort is on the most pristine beach in Fiji. We went for a walk to check out Blue Lagoon Beach Resort next door as we also looked at staying there and, unlike BLBR, Oarsmans has a sandy beach front making for all day swimming. BLBR has a coral front which means you can't access the beach for a quick dip during low tide. You have to walk to the BLBR boat channel to access the water. We were so glad with our choice.

Oarsmans is so peaceful. With a maximum capacity fo 40, it feels like you have your own private beachfront. There are heaps of activities to do including a visit to the local village, to Sawa-i-lau caves, to the Blue Lagoon, hiking or snorkelling around the island. I just love this resort. The staff are second to none. As this resort is owned and ran by Fijians, you truly get that Fijian island holiday. Oni, the front office manager, is so warm and welcoming and the staff can't do enough for you.

We will return.
