“Step back into the 19th century in style”

The Colonial Guest House is a haven of comfort and history. This beautiful family-run inn has been beautifully restored. Most of the rooms are large with beautiful views, and while not all have en suite bathrooms, those without have private bathrooms across the courtyard. There is a lovely upstairs sitting room and small pool for guests, and downstairs the open air restaurant serves good food and attracts a lot of residents of São Filipe. The owners also run Fogo's best travel agency, Zebra Travel, located to the left as you enter the inn. I relied on them to schedule my visit to neighboring Brava Island, and they can also help with tours on Fogo or flights to other islands in Cape Verde (Contact: http://zebratravel.net/ )

Room Tip: If you don't mind crossing the courtyard to use your private bathrooms, the 2 best rooms are in...

Located in a beautiful historic "sobrado" building that I think dates to the 19th century, the Casa Colonial is an excellent place to stay in a city that has a limited selection of hostelries.

The first night there, I had to stay in a small room with a twin bed, a circumstance for which the management was unnecessarily apologetic. I was soon moved to a large and elegant room with a comfortable queen-sized or king-sized bed and many items of what appeared to be historic furniture.

One of the best things about the Casa Colonial is the attached restaurant. I have never had such excellent scrambled eggs in my life. The hen had laid them the day before on the owners' farm in a rural part of Fogo. (Now that I'm back in the U.S., it's back to the relatively flavorless eggs generally available in my home town, even if they're organic and endorsed by all sorts of green organizations.) The daily acebolado (onion-based) fish dish was so good that I ended up eating every meal at the Casa Colonial's restaurant, ordering fish all but once, when I had pizza. There wasn't any need to go anywhere else, especially given that the restaurant's prices were so reasonable.

There are a few things that the traveler should be aware of:

1. Probably because the building is historical and not easily modified, there's no air-conditioning. Some of the rooms have a fan and if yours doesn't, they'll provide one. I never felt too hot.

2. There's an elegant common room with a TV that receives local and international channels (BBC, CNN, TV5 Monde), but no TVs in individual rooms. It was not a problem.

3. I had to provide my own shampoo.

The Casa Colonial is affiliated with Zebra Travel, which is an outstandingly helpful travel agency. I was able to book internal flights through Zebra Travel with ease, and at a lower price than the airlines (Halcyonair and TACV) were demanding at the retail level. Zebra Travel also got me a hotel room in Mindelo (São Vicente) at a fair price. You could ask Zebra Travel to plan your entire Cape Verde trip and you'd probably be well pleased.

If you prefer to stay in an air-conditioned place with all modern amenities and conveniences, the Hotel Xaguate is an alternative in São Filipe. I went over and looked at it. It has the feel of a miniature version of a Holiday Inn Express, i.e., clean and proper but perhaps a bit antiseptic.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the front of the premises. They have more light than the rear-facing ones...

We arrived at Colonial B&B after climbing the Pico do Fogo. We were still dusty and used to the cold and dark nights inside the crater. Colonial B&B was just what we needed: bathrobes, pool, a huge bathroom, hot shower, impeccably clean rooms and good staff, all in a tastefully refurbished colonial mansion.

Before staying at B&B Colonial we also rented a good car through the contacts of this hotel (I believe it is called JFR car rental - the owner is a returned US emigrant). It is actually quite easy to tour around Fogo yourself, including visiting the crater. Just ask around for the route, people are extremely helpful. For approximately the same cost of chartering a taxi up and down to the crater or booking a tour, you'll have the freedom of having your own car. A powerful car is useful - the slopes can be steep.

if you want a cheap room with noisy neighbors just to kill the time between going up to the volcano or down to the port or over to the airport - don't come. if you want fast food and disco music - don't come. if you want shop until you drop - guess what ?, don't come....

but if you want to feel what morabeza means, what elegance and hospitality are, if you can realize that this stop-over can be much more, then you will discover the rare pearl of the islands with the people at zebra travel/colonial house.

and they know what excellent service means - now you will as well ;o)

Room Tip: all the rooms are beautiful. only one (perhaps two ?) have in-room bath/toilets. it is a choice to s...

My wife and I have traveled extensively in Cape Verde and this is, by far, the nicest place we have stayed. It beats the pensaos in Sao Vicente and the "five-star" resorts on Boa Vista. The owners, Vincent and Luisa, are absolutely wonderful people and went out of their way to try and accommodate our wishes. The room we had was clean, spacious and elegant. The pool deck was wonderful. We highly recommend staying here and we will do so again in the future.

One thing to be aware of: the bathrooms are not "en-suite" i.e. you have to leave your bedroom and walk down a little hall to get to your (private) bathroom. Not a big deal.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that opens out on to the pool deck. Super luxe.

Having lived in Cape Verde for several years, this was our 1st visit to Fogo, and it was not disappointing. Thanks to the Trip advisor and the positive reviews, we booked to stay at the Colonial House, and were treated as part of the family, the owner and all the staff were friendly and customer service second to none. The breakfast was a leisurely relaxed event, and a dip in the rooftop pool was very welcoming. Zebra travel located at the hotel arranged for our trip to the volcano, and our ovenight stay at Cha das Caldeiras. Three days was not long enough to see all the island and we will definitely go back and stay at the Colonial.

We have just visited the lovely island of Fogo with friends and stayed in the Colonial for 2 nights. It is a beautiful friendly hotel with loads of charm, terrific staff and an enthusiastic and most helpful owner in Luisa - who simply could not do enough. We would definitely return and have no hesitation in recommending this venue to anyone. While in Fogo also visit the caldera and climb to the top of the Pico - Luisa recommended a place to stay and fixed us a super guide in Paulo. The walk/climb to the top took 5 hours but was worth every minute. Coming down in a little over an hour - "sand skiing" most of the way was truly memorable. A wonderful wonderful visit which we'll remember the rest of our lives.
