Our third, but not final visit to Castara Retreats, was as relaxing and tranquil as ever. We are very glad that this little gem is on our doorstep from Trinidad. Porridge, Kenny and the team again made us feel more like friends than paying guests (we did still have to pay). You get the feeling that nothing is too much for this great bunch at this great place to stay and unwind. Already booked to head back to our hideout on the hillside later in the year. If you're after peace and quiet with a background of the sea crashing or lapping on the beach whilst you hang out in your hammock reading your book and sipping an ice cold pina colada or if you fancy dropping down to the beach for a snorkel and then heading back up to the restaurant for lunch or dinner then book it now. Lazy days indeed. No hesitations.

I couldn't say more than the detailed review left already. A very special and relaxing place. If you want to do more than laze then tobago can be a bit limiting! although we did all the trips suggested. We were looking forward to kayaking for instance but although the tourism website mentions it, the guy who rented kayaks died and no one took over the business. there is a place at pigeon point but it is not as appealing to kayak there. The people of Tobago (with exceptions!!!eg Porridge) are somewhat too laid back, lazy and uninterested in promoting or looking after their beautiful island. Of course there is poverty but how about pride? For instance on Little Tobago the government pays rangers to supply fresh water for the bird life- very important in the dry season as there is no natural water source there. We went first thing in the morning on a self arranged trip with a ranger and had to fill all the troughs as nobody had done it. he was furious as without water the birds can die.
The golf courses are great and empty so take shoes as you can rent clubs. Magdelana is the better one as the other needs more investment from somewhere but is a pretty course.
We enjoyed Castara immensely but for us, Tobago did not have enough to do.

We have just returned from 2 weeks in Tobago, 5 nights of which were spent at Castara Retreats. We stayed in the studio which is a perfect size for two people. The outdoor living and kitchen area has everything you need with the added benefit of lovely views over Castara. We particularly enjoyed relaxing in the hammock!

The onsite restaurant is great and there are also some good cheaper options in the village. We thought Castara beach was one of the nicest in Tobago. Would also recommend the boat tour run on Saturdays which you can book through Porridge.

We loved it and hope to be able to return one day.

This was our first trip to the Caribbean and I don't think we could have made a better choice. we were made to feel welcome right from the start by jeanelle & will. The guy who met us at the airport had a sign on him saying porridge but from video we had seen it looked nothing like him,it turned out he was very poorly and unable to meet us so a taxi driver picked us up.Luckily Porridge made a quick recovery and he turned out to be a right character who you quickly felt relaxed with. We stayed in Hummingbird 2 and this provided us with beautiful views of castara village and bay.The accommodation was rustic but that was it's charm and what we expected.the village was small but interesting, eating out was a challenge but there was always somewhere open for food, all the meals we had were tasty but not to the standard of Kenny's on site restaurant which provided more interesting food although slightly more expensive.

We have just returned from Castara Retreats after having spent eleven nights in Hummingbird 2. It’s hard to add anything new to the stunning reviews you will have already read on Trip Advisor – this place is sublime. Not in 5 Star perfection but in delivering what it says on the tin, if you want air conditioning and flat screen T.V.’s then Castara Retreats is not for you. But, if you're after a luxury holiday without any of the distractions of modern life, save for the now obligatory “free Wi-Fi” then this place is a gem. The legendary Porridge is attentive without being intrusive – a very difficult task but one he accomplished with consummate ease. Any request was dealt with efficiently and always in a timely manner. Porridge was ably assisted by Will who was friendly, gregarious and always had time to talk and socialise and made an important contribution to our overall enjoyment of our holiday. The accommodation is basic luxury if that's not a contradiction in terms. It is refreshing to find somewhere that is not trying to be something they’re not – each apartment is individual in layout and has it’s own idiosyncrasies – what they do all have is incredible views over the beautiful Castara Bay. The food prepared at the Retreat by Kenny and his team is without doubt the best available in the village. Other restaurants of note are the Almond Tree and the Cascreole Restaurant – both located on the beach – good quality local rustic dishes. Variety on any of the menu’s is limited – but at least this ensures all ingredients are fresh. One thing that is seldom mentioned in reviews are the other guests – because Castara Retreats is so individualistic it does tend to attract like minded people (I realise I do have to qualify this by saying this is based upon my personal experience of this single visit). Everyone without exception staying at Castara Retreats was lovely – although I normally prefer to keep myself to myself when on holiday, within hours of arriving the atmosphere is so chilled you find yourself starting up conversations and exchanging stories with other guests in no time. After you’ve taken the obligatory couple of days to unwind there are a number of trips that can be taken. Porridge arranged a boat trip with Shack his son – ten strangers from diverse backgrounds departed from the beach and after a wonderful day of snorkelling, fishing, sunbathing and sharing a wonderful barbecue lunch on the beach – topped the day off swimming and playing with wild dolphins in the open ocean- needless to say cherished memories. Ten relative strangers returned as best friends after having shared a very special time together. Other things to do and see are – Bird watching hike through the rain forest with Newton George the most knowledgeable wild life guide on the island. We hired a car for three days to explore in depth the island – took in a tour of a cocoa plantation and a visit to Argyle Water Falls – both worth the effort. Nights out in Castara that you shouldn't miss- Wednesday night at the Boat House for African Drums and Limbo – not at all tacky and a real flavour of the hypnotic African rhythms all reggae music is based. Keep a special look out for young Ronnie who plays the multi drums – he drives the beat relentlessly bare chested and dripping with sweat at the end of each set – a mesmerising spectacle. Thursday is Bonfire night at Cascreole on the beach(previously mentioned) – pay attention to your young waiter – yes it’s Ronnie the bare chested drummer. Sundays Porridge runs a trip to “Sunday School” a local tradition – started off informally in the street every Sunday and now has it's own premises - a place to both “Lime” and practice your “Whining” arts which Porridge has apparently perfected over the years.
To summarise – if you are looking to holiday on an unspoilt and to a large extent un-commercialised Caribbean paradise providing both an insight and taste of how locals live, love and laugh then Tobago is a real treasure and Castara Retreats without doubt is the jewel in the crown.

We rented the two bedroom apartment called Rainforest for a week (end of April and beginning of May). Clean, comfortable and well appointed. Janelle, housekeeping manager provided bottled water, homemade bread and jam for us in the fridge (nice introduction). Porridge, her husband and overall manager was on-site morning and evening to check on the guests. We loved the view and sounds of the sea. Bird watching was amazing. Restaurant was excellent and highly recommended. Fresh fish and other wonderful entrees with fantastic sunsets and friendly efficient staff. Loved it all!
We walked through the town of Castara every morning, stopping for breakfast at Cheenos. Go to Marguerites for dinner if you can tear yourself away from the Castara Retreat Restaurant. We also went to the Beach Restaurant to watch and hear the drummers on Wednesday night - fun! Be sure to tour the island and check out the rainforest, cocoa plantation and other beaches.

Room Tip: All apartments have lovely views. Some have aircon bedrooms. We stayed in the Rainforest - lovely...
