“Nice place, Little Buggy, Steps from Beaches”
Reviewed September 16, 2011 for a stay in September 2011

Positives:
1) You can hear the waves from the cottage
2) The kitchen is well stocked with what is needed to cook
3) The apartment was very clean upon arrival - I expected some dust on plates and such and it was spotless, also for being the tropics there were no cobwebs or anything and I expect some kind of kitchen critter (alright I expected roaches be so open) and there were none.
4) Really only steps away from two beautiful beaches
5) Village is very friendly
6) Price is fair for what we received
7) Not as hard to find as the directions leave you to believe

Negatives:
1) Although understood screening is not found in the area often, the place could use some screens. Night life burst into our cottage attracted to the light (moths the size of our hands and mosquitoes are thick). Not horrible, but annoying.
2) Fans were not adequate to help cool off second bedroom (one medium size fan for bunk beds - someone is always going to miss out of being cooled)
3) Finding the cottage manager was hard and he did little to assist us during our visit even though he promised (in fairness he stated he was sick in bed all week, but he didn't communicate that to us until we were leaving)
4) We stayed in Cinnamon and could not see the water well. Most other places you would be able to see the water

“A wonderful Carribean holiday location”
Reviewed July 4, 2011 for a stay in March 2011

My wife and 3 year old daughter had a fantastic two week stay in the Tamarind Apartment back in March. The whole experience from beginning to end was very easy and relaxed. Ann, the owner, prides herself on customer care and couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful in responding to all my queries before we booked the apartment as well as providing some very useful information packs. Joshua the manager was also fantastic, he regularly called by to check we were ok, but without being intrusive, he shared his local knowledge with us and we also asked him to cook us a fish bbq one night which was really tasty and a nice authentic experience.

The apartment was comfortable and well-equipped with attractive local character. It had a spacious and airy lounge, and a large private and shaded veranda, where you could eat outside, and sit and relax enjoying the local birdlife and the view and lovely sunsets over little Bay. The location was also perfectly positioned for easy access to both beaches less than 5 minutes walk away, and also the main village centre.

Yes there are the occasional sounds of dogs and chickens at night, but you can also hear the relaxing sounds of the waves breaking, the cicadas, and occasional rain showers in the night. None of this was ever a serious issue for us, if anything it only adds to the authenticity of the expereince. All in all, the Tamarind apartment and the village of Castara offer the perfect place to spend a holiday that is much more immersed into the local surroundings and way of life than staying in a hotel resort in a much more tourist developed area.

“We had a ball !”
Reviewed May 30, 2011 for a stay in April 2011

What a wonderful time we had ! The owner gave us lots of useful information and was quick to reply to our many questions. The manager (Joshua) was a gentle, kind, decent guy. Nothing was too much trouble, always available when we needed him.

We stayed in the studio apartment, Saffron. It is huge ! Clean, comfortable and well equipped. The view could have been better - there are a couple of trees that obscure the view of the sea. But, the light, bright, spacious apartment made up for that.

The local men are fun and very friendly, but cannot say the same for the womenfolk who tend to be surly and ill mannered. They need to lighten-up and smile occasionally.

We had some great nights out at D'Lime bar and a wild party night at Sunday School.
The Boathouse on Little Bay is fun, especially on Wednesdays.

The food and restaurants are unremarkable and too expensive for simple, local food.
Vera's Under D'Almond Tree restaurant is right on the beach, superb location and great for people watching - do try a Roti for lunch and you'll not starve for the rest of the day ! Cheno's Cafe was good for breakfast and socializing. Marguerites food was real tasty, but service was miserable. The Clay Kitchen food was better out than in ! The thought of it makes me nauseous.

The cottage was well placed for both beaches, taking only a minute or two to walk there. The Big Bay was our favourite, lots of interesting, fishing activities to watch and a few quiet, peaceful corners to relax. Little Bay needs a good clean-up - the bar and guest house owners need to get their act together.

We laughed a lot, relaxed a lot & had great fun.

“good for family & groups, lots of birds”
Reviewed May 20, 2011 for a stay in December 2010

We stayed here renting the top studio and 2 bedrooms that connected. It was perfect for us: husband, wife, grandmother and two young children. Our friends, a couple with 2 kids rented the downstairs 2 bedroom. It is a great option for a group... but I'm not sure I would like it if folks I didn't know were also there. There aren't that many family options or places that accommodate larger groups, so this was really perfect in that sense. Sound carries, it was easy to hear others in the other parts of the building, and the neighbour’s dog barked a bit too much at times. Joshua, the manager, was very helpful and friendly and we loved being there. It is basic... it has a tree house feel, being high up, very open, with lots of beautiful birds around. This wouldn't be for everyone, but we really enjoyed it. The view from top deck is great and is a great place to eat all your meals! The kitchen was well equipped and convenient. Because there are no screens and the window shutters open fully, it give a great airy breeze. However, the birds (and the odd bat & lizard) fly right in and will eat any food left out. The location is perfect. It is a two minute walk to two great beaches and a five minute walk into town. The flowers and trees around the house are beautifully laid out and maintained. A great option for a group, who wants convenience (not luxury) and enjoys a bit of nature!

“Home Sweet Home in Castara”

My wife and I were escaping from NYC for one week of relax and by chance we booked the Saffron apartment at Castara Cottage. It was a lucky pick! We enjoyed every single moment in the house, cooking fresh fish, reading on the terrace or just sleeping protected by the mosquito net.
If you are looking for something homy, with discret but proactive service (Thanks Ann & Joshua!), this is your place.

“Beautiful place, but impossible to sleep and rest in your holidays”
Reviewed February 9, 2011 for a stay in January 2011

We (three friends) stayed in Castara for two weeks in Jan 2011 and loved the village and it's friendly and helpful locals.
Castara Cottage Tamarind apartment is really as nice as on the pictures, cosy, colorful, fresh with a spacy terrace giving space to all of us.
As the cottage is situated in the middle of two streets leading to beaches very often locals dropped by to chat or leave fruits (Mango, Papaya..) on our table.
We liked the space and interior of the apartment, even if the bathroom could be much better as it isn't tiled and has a very small washing basin. We have seen much better bathrooms within more economic apartments in Castara- this could be improved, so far the only small critics in a first moment, BUT:
The worst had to come: as the apartment is fully wooden construction and very open it is also very loud. In Castara there are lot's of Roosters and chicken and dogs. Roosters start crying at 1 o'clock in the morning, dogs bark all the time, nearby church with loud music early evening, main road behind the apartment with cars and loud music- all this we could have managed and get used to it.
ONE THING HAS BEEN IMPOSSIBLE: sleep all night long with the neighbors dog barking 4 or 6 times a night almost for half an hour. It seemed as if the dog was standing in our room. The neighbor keeps the dog just 3 meters away and chained in the night- and he was not willing to move it into the house or behind his house. We tried one week with earplugs, one of my friends had a nervous breakdown after 8 nights without sleep, even with earplugs and had to move to another place. Joshua the manager was very nice and tried to help us, he also talked to the neighbor- no chance. Locals tried to find a quiet and not expensive place for us, as they already knew that there was a problem with this dog- they have had complaints before, so also the owner of the place has been already aware about this problem, but nobody had warned us!
We asked the owner of the apartment if she was willing to return at least a small part of the prepayment as we had to move, she was not willing to help.

So we are very disappointed- even if the place is so nice- we cannot recommend this place to other people if the dog problem is not solved.

We were told that all dogs do bark, not only the neighbors’ dog, but we can tell that this is not really the truth: yes, there is some barking in the night- but this dog is the only one you can hear all night through and that loud over whole Castara. And I'm very sorry for the owner of Castara Cottage to have built such a beautiful apartment and then get such neighbors. But this is no excuse for not advising customers in advance that there night be this noise problem, especially as Castara Cottage is not beneath the most economic places. We paid 1382 USD for two weeks, so minimum one can expect is that he's able to sleep at night!!!
We work hard all year round, a lot of stress, so holidays are HOLY to be able to relax once a year- not possible without sleep.
Possible to have a nervous breakdown? Yes: Deprivation of sleep is used as a torture method.
After we partially moved to another place and were able to sleep the last 6 nights of our stay we could finally really enjoy this great place and it's friendly inhabitants! We also went to soca concert in Scarborough with some locals and had great time seeing 6 bands and dancing.

We loved Castara and it's people, the beaches, the nature, liming and dancing, snorkeling (also saw big stingray in the little bay), the locals are so friendly we sure will return!! But sorry- NOT to Castara Cottage
