We spent two weeks in Tobago, of which the first week was spent in Carpe Diem in Castara. Chris and Yvonne made us very welcome and were very helpful when we were making our booking and throughout our stay. The accommodation has everything you need and the gardens are lovely.

Castara is a fantastic village in which to stay and very picturesque. Chris and Yvonne told us everything we needed to know, such as which restaurants were open when, where to get our bread from, etc.

It is very quiet, there were a few other tourists around but we often had the beach to ourselves. The beach is a short walk, (less than 5mins), down the hill from Carpe Diem.

After our stay in Castara we stayed at the Magdalena Grand Beach Resort and spent most of our time wishing we were back at Carpe Diem. We will be back.

We always say that Castara should carry a health warning in as much as it is addictive and you can never get enough of it ...............Just look what happened to us, we ended up building a house here ..........................!

Well, when we left 6 months earlier we said we would be back. Little did we know it would be so soon. But that's the draw for us of Castara. Simply beautiful! Once again the accommodation provided everything we required. Great location for a quick walk to a heavenly beach, great snorkelling, and when you are done in the sea, fantastic bird life and agouties from the balcony. Chris and Yvonne are wonderful hosts who have found a true bit of paradise and, as always, were happy to share their experiences and advice. It was such a pleasure to see them again. The snorkelling in Little Bay this time was nothing but superb. On one day alone I counted 7 turtles, 2 Moray eel, 1 massive lobster and just such an abundance of reef fish. We were lucky enough to be there for a local football tournament. Wow! Someone on our flight told us to keep the secret of Tobago to ourselves and I can understand where he was coming from. Having been 3 times now and hiring a car for 2 days to visit both ends of the Island, only leads me to be certain that when we return, and return we will, Castara and Carpe Diem, will be our choice of venue once again.

Thank you Mike and Tracy for being such great guests! The worst part of our 'job' owning and running Carpe Diem is having to say goodbye...........................................

My friend and I returned to Castara last month since we loved the little village, the people in it, the food, the views and of course Yvonne and Chris at Carpe Diem. We travel often and this is one of the first times we have returned to a place we have already been. We plan on making this a yearly thing because Castara and Carpe Diem have become one of our favorite destinations.

It had been a little over a year since we visited and I had made some mistakes with our booking dates. Yvonne and Chris were very helpful in sorting out the changes. We stayed in the downstairs studio this time instead of the Green Room upstairs. While the view is a little better upstairs, the studio was impressive and like having our own little apartment. When I say the view is "better" upstairs, I am basically comparing the most awesome view in my life with a slightly awesome-er view. It didn't matter in any case, as our hosts were happy to invite us upstairs to watch a particularly lovely sun set.

We arrived at about 3 am and our driver, Denzil, got us to the house safe and sound. Since our hosts had already gone to bed, we were happy to find a nice note letting us know there was a music festival in the village the next day as well as a few small provisions in the fridge in case we were hungry after our travels. Life is pretty nice when you wake up to gorgeous ocean views and sit amongst the Papaya and banana trees.

The food in Castara is super fresh and having a nice rum punch or Carib at Marvin's bar is a great end to a beach day (or a great beginning depending on how you feel about vacation day drinking). I almost don't want to tell anyone about this area, because it is amazing the way it is with very little tourism compared to resort lined beaches. It is the kind of place where people remembered our names from the visit the year past. I even helped haul up the fishing nets on the beach.

This is not a swanky all inclusive (boring) resort some people may be looking for. But honestly, why would you want that when you could come have a really authentic vacation experience? If you want truly special people with unspoiled views I would totally recommend Castara and Carpe Diem.

Room Tip: There are four rooms, you basically can't go wrong any way.

Carpe Diem is a nice, clean and quiet apartment in the small village
Castara. The property owner Chris and Yvonne where very helpful and give as
a lot of information about the local environment. This hideaway, surrounded
by an authentic fishing village atmosphere and pure nature, is the ride
place to enjoy tranquility and the local way of living.
We will definitely come back next year to Carpe Diem!

- Trinidad is nice but Tobago is paradise -

Out from the seedy airport area and expensive tourist hotels in the SW of the island are small fishing villages dotted around the coast. Castara is on the Caribbean about half way up the west side & perfect for talking part in real village life. Not so many tourists venture up here but it's a wonderful taste of what the real Caribbean is like with amusing friendly locals.

Nestled above the wonderful beach is Carpe Diem. A haven of tranquillity and just the best place to unwind. We shared the upstairs apartment with the owners Chris and Yvonne who are the very best of hosts. Living there for 3 months every year they know all the locals and places to eat and visit.

They built this house a few years back & the breeze blows through the spacious rooms, not a pane of glass in site. A comfortable bed, good shower and cooking facilities add to the comfort of this lovely house together with sharing your breakfast with the vast array of brightly coloured birds that visit you on the veranda each morning and fruit bats in the evening.

Behind the house is the rainforest and we spent many hours here when we got too hot on the beach. Our guide, recommended by Yvonne and accredited by the tourist office, was Errol Roach - not a relation. He was just the most informed man and so willing to part with a ton of information - some unregistered guides just wiz you through but he spent many hours with us.

Food is of a high standard in the local restaurants but avoid pretentious / expensive ones - Sandcastles being a case in point, see a full review on www.mytobago.info.

Fish & shellfish are on most menus depending on the days catch along with chicken and some excellent goat, usually only consisting of 4-5 items but the standard of cooking is high, mainly fresh and generally cheap. Careful with any of the chilli dishes - I mistakenly agreed to one where the option was normal - read extreme!!!

We found a car essential for touring further a field and again Yvonne came up with a great local company. The bays with glorious beaches further north were idyllic and deserted.

Don't forget to check out the direct Monarch flight - 30kgs of luggage and great service. Far cheaper than BA and Virgin who seem to have identical prices!

I can whole heartedly recommend Carpe Diem for that all important relaxing break, so easy to get to and away from our inclement weather in the UK. Such good value.

Thank you for a great review, it reminds me of everything that made us decide to build the house in Castara in the first place!
