“Skip the all-inclusive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2011

We spent a few days here purchasing “the room only” after reading so many negative reviews about the all-inclusive packages. They were right. The hotel itself and adjacent beach were great (and free) and the food served at the restaurant was good and priced well. There was no need to spend the extra $$$ for an all-inclusive package because for the life of me I couldn't see what was gained by it. The pool bar was NEVER open and the water sports equipment on the beach was a joke. Snorkeling??? When?? Where?? The nightly entertainment, which only happened once, was included for everyone anyway. It’s a nice, quiet hotel with a nice quiet beach just don’t spend a bunch of money on something that doesn’t gain you anything

Three of us booked into the Grand Courlan Hotel and Spa near Scarborough for 4 nights. We had 2 lovely spacious adjoining rooms overlooking the pool and beach, and to spoil ourselves after a very unhappy experience in a north Tobago guest house, we decided to take an all-inclusive package. It was wonderful to find this gem of a hotel; peaceful, quiet, clean, on a lovely beach, with friendly and helpful staff, - especially Nazim, our charming bar attendant, who has worked there for many years and who delighted us with not a few mouth watering cocktails! The rooms were spacious, very comfortable, containing everything we needed and more. For instance a beautiful flower was placed in our towels in the bathroom; there was tea and coffee making facilities, room service, a huge comfortable bed, TV, fridge and telephone, [none of these things existed in the so-called luxury guest house we had moved from] in fact everything you can expect from luxury accommodation. Good food is important to us, and we were not disappointed. Guests had the choice of a beach bar / restaurant, or one of 2 hotel restaurants. Fresh fish was a great favourite and beautifully cooked - and food always arrived hot. The buffet at the beach bar couldn't have been better. The hotel was very quiet, with few visitors. It's fair to say that apart from the rooms and restaurants, the public areas of this hotel are tired and much in need of refurbishment, but this in no way detracted from our 5 happy days and nights spent there. Much to the delight of one of our party, who is 86 years young, there were many acres of bird sanctuary across the road, - which he says was the highlight of the whole holiday! He had in fact been gone for so long that as dusk began to fall we panicked, but the hotel manager couldn’t have been kinder or more concerned in helping us find our missing bird lover!! I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting peace and quiet, great accommodation, food, friendly ambiance and good value.

I wish we would have read some of these reviews before we booked our vacation. Poor customer service from the time we checked in until we left. The employees were unprofessional, rude and had an overall mean disposition. The 'resort' I use the term loosely is located in a prime area; however there are limited amenities for an all inclusive hotel and the entire property was circa 1980. This place needs a complete renovation from staff to the property. They charge a 5 star price with 1 star service. Very disappointed. Will not return.

This was the second time I stayed at this resort within the last year. It is situated in a safe and picturesque location just across the beautiful Stonehaven Beach in the Caribbean Sea with a calm sheltered area on one end and some wave action at the other for the more adventurous. The hotel is well designed with wide open walkways, a large koi pond and well-manicured and colorful gardens. There is also a long swimming pool (I estimate it to be at least 15m) for lap swimming and a swim-up bar which was not operational while I was there. I was also impressed by our spacious ocean view room and balcony which also overlooked the swimming pool.

My room, similar to last year’s was well furnished, including a king sized bed, a mini fridge and a large safe for valuables. The room was cleaned every day with a “turn down the bed” service and change of beach towels every evening.

The staff with whom I interacted was friendly, and in particular, Valerie who attended to me at breakfast most mornings. Breakfast was buffet styled and included delicious local dishes and fresh fruit. From my table I had a closer view of the ocean, and enjoyed the refreshingly cool breezes. Each morning I enjoyed watching the birds that seemed to tease each other and those that tried to steal food off the tables.

This resort is for adults only which provided a calm and peaceful ambiance, especially when relaxing by the pool. Last trip I took a tour of their spa and although I did not take advantage of these services, I was amazed that they were comparable to those provided on cruise ships. There is a full well-equipped gym, which I used almost every day.

They need the trade over there, but I don't want my friends to waste their money. Booked into the Graffton Beach but was 'upgraded' to the Le Grand Courlan. Approx 20 guests only at the hotel as a previous visitor had warned on Trip Advisor. They are struggling with the recession but I still don't understand why the staff are so surly and don't want to serv you when there is not a lot else to do. Really disappointed.
Pros:
Rooms clean. Towels changed everyday.
Nice pool.
Cons:
No bell boy... drag your bags up the stairs as there is no lift.
No welcome....kind'a like a complementary rum punch, should be no big deal when we are All Inclusive.
No snacks.
No pool bar.
No choice of restaurant as there were not enough clients to keep them open.
Bar tender cleared all the drinks away by 10pm. Would get up to serve you if you were prepared to face the really growly attitude. (Not sure what else she would have been doing?).
A 100TT (approx £10) limit at the beach bar was a surprise. We had a few drinks at the beach expecting to get a late lunch only to be told that we had exceeded our limit and would have to pay for lunch.
I don't want to rant.....Nazim, one of the bar tenders was nice and would chat to us. Aileen is a cheery waitress and Valarie was really professional so 'Thank You' to them. They were the exception to the rule. Please take note of this review if you are saving long and hard for the holiday of a lifetime. Check out some other reviews and other hotels.

Dear LynneH2,

Thank you for your review of your stay with us. We appreciate your feedback. I’m pleased that you were able to enjoy the pool, a clean room, and friendly customer service from our staff.

However, we are disappointed to learn that you were less than satisfied. We strive to provide excellent customer service to all our guests. There are some instances where we are unaware of each guest’s expectations. We welcome your feedback and had these items been brought to our attention during your stay, we would have sincerely done our best to address them.

We hope that you allow us to impress you on your next visit to Tobago.

I usually don't write reviews. But after reading the reviews on here, I decided to give Grafton a try since it seemed to give the most bang for your buck. The hotel is in a good location near the beach. It has great amenties and reasonably priced.

My husband and child shared a room with two double beds and it was plenty big for all of us. The decor was a little outdated, but the room was extremely clean and comfortable.

As for the hotel, you can't beat the location. It is right on the beach. And the views are spectacular from the ocean view rooms. My son enjoyed snokeling on the beach. My husband enjoyed lounging poolside, but my favorite was the yoga class on saturday morning.

This hotel was excellent.... the stay was lovely and the people were extremely friendly. I suggest getting an ocean view room as the view of the pool area and the ocean is gorgeous. The staff was so easygoing, we were basically free to do whatever without anyone bothering us. There were hardly any other guests at the hotel at this time (first weekend in October) and we had the pool to ourselves every day. We made good use of the bar; the bartenders make great gin martinis and were extremely helpful in suggesting cool places to go. We were booked for 2 nights but had to extend because we were having such a relaxing time. we did not get to experience the spa, but will definitely do that next time. They also offer yoga on saturdays and tuesdays. Hotel is only about 15 min from airport and many of the nightclubs & restaurants / tourist areas. The location was actually better because it was less busy. We spent a lot of time at Storebay, took the glass bottom boat tour. As for nightlife, The Shade is great on a Saturday night and "Sunday School" is a must on Sunday nights... We spent most of our days by the pool having drinks and then went out at nights... Tobago is a lovely place.... completely different from Trinidad, the people are so laid back and friendly.... and all of the local food is delicious... only thing I regret was not staying another two or three days.... cannot wait to go back and take advantage of everything else this hotel has to offer...
