KUANGUKUANGU - Luxury Cabin
Ranked #1 of 1 Sossusvlei B&B and Inns
Reviewed January 31, 2012

We stayed for two nights at KuanguKuangu and would thoroughly recommend it. Two nights gives you a full day to unwind and appreciate the solitude and beauty of the place.

Willem and Hannetjie at the nearby Barchan Dunes are very friendly and welcoming but leave you completely undisturbed if that's what you want- the cabin is not visible from the lodge but is 25mins away by foot if required.

The closest shops really are a loooooong way away, so if you are planning to go down the self catering route, stock up on everything in Windhoek (there is a decent sized fridge at the cabin plus a good range of cooking equipment and utensils). Alternatively, Willem and Hannetjie provide excellent breakfasts, lunch and dinner and also BBQ packs. We also did the evening drive with Willem, which was a very good way to see oryx, zebra and other animlas whcih would otherwise be more difficult to see. Sunset over the desert with a stiff G&T in your hand is an experience not to be forgotten!

The scenery around the cabin is incredible, and a sunrise at the Kuangukuangu is out of this world.

Overall, this was undoubtedly the highlight of our Namibia trip.

We spent 3 nights at Kuangukuangu at the beginning of our trip. The location and landscape is on an epic scale and in retrospect the accommodation was our favourite overall (and that was a very difficult decision based on the quality we enjoyed throughout). Our experience at Kuangukuangu was absolutely amazing! We choose this lodge in Namibia because the setting seemed to be breathtaking ; and it is ! What a place to start our African Adventure. The colours and the landscape will be forever etched on our minds. The vastness, variety and colours of the landscape are beyond desccription and every sense and emotion is bombarded. The cabin was amazing with views that defied belief and it was almost impossible to absorb the level of luxury and comfort that surrounded us. All travel weariness had disappeared!

You have the possibility of booking your own braai pack, which gave us a lot of flexibility and peace of mind. You can also have the feeling of a bed and breakfast if you choose to have breakfast or dinner at the farmhouse, 5 minutes from the cabin. This is the best way to combine lodge and bed and breakfast in Namibia.

Only one cabin, masses of space. Highly recommended.

Management, service, food : excellent.

No need to ask where to stay in Namibia!

We spent a single night in Kuangukuangu, leaving Sossusvlei area to Swakopmund. We loved the place ! The single cabin is about 2 miles from the lodge itself, giving you a total privacy and a beautiful view on a valley that seems to be here just for you. The place is well designed and really confortable. We didn't have the dinner at the lodge but the owner kindly prepared meat kebabs and sausage we cooked over our fire, delicious !!!!
Kuangukunagu was a unique experience during our trip and we would recommend it as a must-do in south west namibia !

It is a well hackneyed phrase but this is a place of your dreams. An almost unique building in a gorgeous setting with no other building in sight. Wildlife such as Kudu, Oryx and Mountain Zebra as your neighbours as well as many birds. Alledgedly self catering for those who do this, we made our own breakfasts during our three day stay, but excellent hosted meals are available at the 'invisible' Farmhouse a short distance away. Drive over or walk. The host Willem will drive you back if required.
The bungalow/retreat is set back 3 km from the minor road leading to Spreetshoogt Pass from just north of the settlement of Solitaire. You are surrounded by mountains and as the name of the place implies you are in dune country although at the time of our visit there was lots of fresh grass.
Furnished in a thoughtful but simple style the layout is quite minimalist with just a bed and shelving and chairs. The front is fully glazed so keep those curtains closed to remain cool. Outside there is a storage room and cooking facilities leading to an open air bathroom. The place is fully plumbed and hot water on tap.
Lots to do in Solitaire with Sesriem and Sossusvlei about an hour away on a decent road.
Or nip to the farm and meet the resident Meerkats or just sit and relax. An ideal place to just be simply doing nothing. Dictate your own pace and forget schedules.
Willem will happily take you for a sundowner/game drive to see his animals if you can tear yourself away.
Capacity of KuanguKuangu is of course limited to a couple but those travellng in a larger group need not despair. The Farm has three other small serviced bungalows discreetly located nearby. The only problem would be who gets Kuangu Kuangu!!

Room Tip: There is only one choice here so it is made for you. Eat at the farmhouse and relax.

we stayed for 2 days and would have stayed more if we had the time. There really is so much to say about the place - sit under a blanket of stars, hike the hills, read on your porch, enjoy the beautiful landscape and isolation, think and pray, its just you and the majesty of nature. We ate at the farmhouse one night (1 km away) - they are excellent hosts, and ordered a braii packet the next day. We bought some food at a local store but shouldn't have - the braii packet was the perfect amount. If you feel the need to leave the bush, there's a garage/restaurant combo and good bakery (with apple crumble speciality dish) about 20 mins up the way.
The place is perfectly set up with everything you need, they have thought of everything. Its just as decribed on their website. If you have a chance to spend time here do it!

Room Tip: if you plan to cook - have some paper towels to cover your food. Also, if you want music, bring som...

Thank you for your comments, we do appreciate. We are glad that you enjoyed Kuangukuangu as your accommodation in Namibia, as well as the braai pack experience around the fire place! The braai is an alternative to the cosy and warm dinner with your hosts at the guestfarm.
You are right, we focused on Namibian music and South African music , but we will definitely add some more CD in the Cabin, thank you for the advice.
All the best,

Unfortunately we only spend one night in this lovely place. The beautiful room, the friendly welcome, the amazing views, the stars in the night! For us it was an incredible place to spend our first night & day in Namibia! We like to go back! We stayed here in July 2010; in case we go back to Namibia we will go back to Kuangukuangu and try to stay more than one night.

We have spent three days in February 2010 in this wonderful place. It was the starting point of our Namibia trip and one highlight - for sure. This mystic place brings you back to nature in the best sense. We have spent hours by watching the clouds, the changing light and enjoying the sound of silence. And at night we have joint our hosts for a delicious dinner and delightful conversation. We could tell so much more about KuanguKuangu, the stars, the bees, the fireplace, a wonderful braii under the rainbow... Go for the experience youself. It is worth it!
