After years working in the desert I cannot believe I actually paid to sleep in a tent. But that's unfair. These tents have a bathroom and showers and fabulous sunset views.

They also have a nice bar on site and a refreshing plunge pool. Particularly refreshing since it was the African winter.

You can get food at the main resort restaurant but that would involve driving. You can, if you arrive before 4pm also order a whole bunch of raw ingredients to be brought from the restaurant (including game meat - we had oryx, kudu and impala) along with BBQ wood and cook your own. I urge you do do just this. The quantities of food are astronomical and so, for half the price of a catered meal, we got enough food and cooking fuel to last us the final three days of our trip. All delivered direct to your tent.

The accommodation itself is close to the dunes national park which is probably why you're here in the first place

Really clever design with BBQ, kitchen and fridge outside on your own private terrace. Very comfortable bed and bathroom inside and nice pool area. All self catering so you will need to go to the nearby lodge if you don't fancy doing your own cooking.

We stayed two nights at the desert camp and loved the setting (which is magic) and the simplicity of the camp. The tents were great. We didnt actually use the self-catering facilities as we were on a small group tour but were impressed by the compact set-up that came with each tent. The pool bar area and staff were delightful. We had breakfast and dinner at the Sossusvlei Lodge but much preferred the serenity of the Desert Camp.

the staff were nice and the room was okay, but this place was not right for my family.

Given the long way we came to visit Sossusvlei, and how special it was, it was a false economy to stay in such a cheap place. We ate at the Sossusvlei lodge just down the road and thought the lodge was very nice and worth paying the extra to stay there.

I think the very high rating given by many reviewers might lead you to think the camp is nicer than it really is.

Dear Mr Mackay,
Thank you for your review. We do communicate it clearly on our advertising and website that we are a self-catering establishment (3 star on TripAdvisor) and not a luxury establishment. We do get high rankings on TripAdvisor as our guests judge us on being a value for money establishment and they enjoy the simplicity of our units, the magnificent views and being close to nature at Desert Camp. Apologies that we haven’t met your high expectations this time – Looking forward to welcome you at Sossusvlei Lodge on your next visit to Namibia!
Best wishes,

We throughly enjoyed our stay at the desert camp, sitting out on the patio using the brai to cook the excellent food ordered from reception was a fantastic experience. We were visited by flocks of small birds, saw springbok, a jackal and a fox. The sky was filled with stars. Take time to use the plunge pool enjoy a sundowner at the outdoor bar. The tents were very comfortable and well equipped (rent your cooking equipment and buy wood from reception). Great water pressure in the ensuite shower and plenty of hot water.

We had an incredible time at Desert Camp. We originally booked to stay there since the main lodge was fully booked. We booked our meals at the main lodge, as Desert Camp is self-catering. The main lodge had a very warm and social atmosphere, but it was always wonderful to retreat back to silent Desert Camp. The bar staff (basically the only staff around as there is no kitchen) were always friendly and helpful, and having late afternoon drinks around the pool was a must. We absolutely enjoyed our time there and hope to come back!

Most enjoyable stay. Excellent accommodation plus first class service. Great setting peaceful and quiet. We paid a deposit for the crockery, cutlery etc and collected same from the camp reception. Quiet, adequate for our needs. The deposit was refunded on return of the equipment on the day we left. Pre-ordering of food such as braai packs and salads on a daily basis works very well. Delivered to us on day of order by 18.00 hrs. Works very well. Most enjoyable stop over, could quite easily have stayed a few more days. Fascinating area and great seeing dunes for Africa! Excellent value, could well do with a return visit.
