“Great Hotel !!!!!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2012

Spent a week from July 14 to 21 at Cala di Volpe and weren't disappointed. Friendly staff, clean room and quick service. Two very clean pools, one salt water and the other fresh water. The beach and Sea are very rocky and Water shoes are a must! They clean the beach every morning and an umbrella and 2 lounge chairs are assigned to you for the beach during your stay. We had our own kitchen so we purchased our groceries at the local store and prepared our own meals. The restaurant didn't have a great selection for our liking but was very clean.
The entertainment staff did the best to keep the guests happy and entertained. Had a great time there and would return there next time.

Room Tip: Room on the top are less quiet and have a better view.

Just returned from a weeks holiday with Thomas Cook and on the whole it has been a positive experience. The grounds of the hotel are immaculate and the rooms, while a liitle basic, are spotleslsly clean and receive daily maid service. We were accomodated in the Villa Le Agarve section at the top of the hill overlooking the lower beach front properties and main hotel buildings such as the reception block and main restaurant, and this meant an uphill trek back to our apartment. However it did result in a fantastic view overlooking the beach and on a really positive note it meant we were a reasonable distance from the rather noisy childrens entertainment, which ran late into the evning. The hotel runs regular shuttle services up and down the hill, but at best its no more than an easy 4 minute uphill stroll

Being in this section of the hotel at the top of the hill had a bonus in that we has access to the newly opened swimming pool and leisure facilities in the Borge Le Rocce section adjoining our apartments. This pool was never, ever busy and at times we were the only residents there. I think I may have been the only guest to have used the gymn all week.

While the hotel has mainly catered in the past for Italian and German guests we had no problems communicating in the hotel, as there were a number of english speaking staff. This was also the case in Tropea where we had no trouble in the shops or bars. Being only 4 english guests that week made it feel quite special

There are few less positive areas to comment on, mainly the food in the restaurant is a little restricted and not very imaganative, the location is not ideal for walking anywhere meaning visiting Tropea or trying to get to the local rail station means incurring a stiff charge from the hotel for using their shuttle service and the beach can only be described as shingle/fine grit - it is definitely not soft white sand. The best section of beach is in front of the Stromboli hotel about 800m around the corner of the beach to the right of the hotel. The sea here does not have the same level of rocks that are quite numerous in front of the Cala Di Volpe.

Car hire is a must if you intend to venture further afield, but if its just trips into Tropea you are after contact Salvatore @ Mammamiakalabria.biz or call him on 3395286173 and he will taxi you from the hotel to Tropea for €6 return. For 2 people this turned out to be less than half what the hotel asked for. Tropea is simply stunning, well worth more than a single visit, and just as good is Pizzo which we reached from the rail staion nearest to the hotel, Riccaddi, for just €4.50 return. Pizzzo is a wow, and if you like ice-cream this is THE place to visit.

In summary a fab area to visit, and a meravigliosa vacanza

This hotel is a special holiday! Have just returned after spending 1 week there. Really wanted a chill out week, and this is the place. The accomodation is amazing, as is the location, staff, food, etc, etc etc. I highly recommend it.

However, (and this would be your choice if you like to wander), you do need to either have a car, do organised trips, or (recommended) make full use of the hotel shuttle bus. You can book at reception, and go to Tropea, which is the most beautiful town( make sure you go!), for a small charge. If you want to go in the evening, you need to get a taxi back, but it is only 20 euros, and well worth the money to spend the evening in such a lovely place. We watched an Italy v Croatia Euro match in a lovely Italian bar, made to feel so welcome!!

We arrived on 9th June, and the new area at the top of the resort had just opened, a beautiful bar, pool, steam room, gym, and if you want to chill out without children, perfect for couples. Lovely staff ( Angelina and Katya)

The views from the rooms are amazing. Also, which I didn't realise before I arrived, the rooms are at a minimum, 1 bedroom apartments and have kitchens, fridges, freezer, etc, so if you want to take tea or coffee to have the first cup when you wake up, everything is there!!

All the staff here are great, and the owner and his family have a very hands on approach. They eat in the reataurant at lunch and dinner, and while we were there, joined all the different nationalities each night who were supporting their Euro teams!

My tips would be not to go to breakfast too late. It's from 8 - 10, and on holiday I like to take a late approach, but sometimes some things had gone, and finished (fresh croissants, scrambled eggs) And, if you are at the top of the hill, enjoy the views, and by the end of the week, my fitness levels had got so much better! (But you can ask for the hotel bus to give you a lift back up, and just enjoy a nightcap or coffee at the bar, looking out over Stomboli !!) For those of you that like to know, the beds and pillows are "firm", the bathrooms beautiful!!

If you are thinking of going, want a really chilled week, give this hotel a go, we had an amazing week. We will definitely go back.

We stayed at the Cala di Volpe for a week at the end of May and had the most wonderful stay.
We arrived late on the Saturday night and the staff organised for food to be bought to the room, 2 plates of a selection of anti pasti style food which was so tasty and it only got better from there. We stayed on the half board option, whihc we were a little nervous about beforehand but with no reason. Dinner was an absolute joy every evening. To start there was a buffet of cold foods, roasted vegetables, potatoes, meats, polenta in every style. There was then a first course (pasta) and a second course (meat/fish) - generally 4 options for each, followed by dessert. The wine was fantastic and very good value, we drank the house wine most evenings, although we did have a bottle of Rose recommended by one of the waitress's.
Our room was one of the bungalows at the top of the hill. We had specifically chosen this after reading the reviews due to the mention of the views, and these did not disappoint. Absolutely stunning! You cold see the eolie islands and siciliy on a clear day! The walk up to the bungalows was a steep hill, but not half as bad as we thought, and quite welcomed after 4 courses and drinks of an evening :-) The bungalow was lovely, very clean and smart with a big patio which was farily private (all had their own gardens).
The hotel had 2 pools which were never crowded,a long with a section of the beach for private use. You could hire the pedalos or go out in the caneos. The water was some of the clearest Ive ever seen, just stunning.
The hotel is a little isolated but we had hired a car for the week which we found essential. We went to Tropea a couple of times, Pizzo and the Marina just before Pizzo. We also drove a little further south but didn't find much. Our car only cost £120 through Budget from the airport and transfers were being charged at £40pp so we thought it was pretty good value really.
We booked the holiday with Monarch diretcly. The flights were not even half full, we had a row of seats to ourselves on both legs of the journey. It was unbelieavble value for money!
We can not rate this hotel enough and completely re-iterate that it is like a little piece of paradise - one which we throughly enjoyed. Thank you to all the staff their.

Room Tip: The bungalows at the top have stunning views and their is a pool and fitness centre to service these...

We have recently returned from a week at this lovely hotel. Unfortunately as we have planned a later main holiday this year, we only had one week here. The staff were friendly, especially in the restaurant, very pleasant and really went out of their way to make you feel special (a special mention to Michaela the restaurant manager). The food was of a high standard with delicious fresh fish and seafood dishes, even the house wine was good. The location was perfect with bungalows, small units dotted along the side of a hill sloping down to the sea, pool and restaurant. The rooms were spacious and comfortable if a little basic. The hotel was immaculate as well as the beach. We went on a couple of trips including a day at an Eco farm with a cooking class included which was extremely enjoyable, the farmer and his wife were real characters as well as Lulu their little dog who escorted us everywhere during our visit. The only downside was that Cosmos, our travel company, failed to inform us that the trips catered for German speakers only, however as the farmer spoke good English and the tour guides made valiant attempts to translate for us, it didn't detract too much from the overall experience. The other trips we made were to Pizzo and Tropea, lovely old world villages with fascinating shops, history and scenery. Unfortunately, due to stormy weather our trip to the Aeolian Islands was cancelled although we had visited a few years earlier when staying in Sicily. Back to the hotel, if you want a tranquil, away from it all holiday in a beautiful location, this is ideal. I would say it was not ideally suited to young children or elderly people staying at the higher level due to the steep slope down to the beach, otherwise perfect. We would definitely return.

Room Tip: For a sea view stay at upper level, we were in room 80, very private with large patio area. Sea leve...

Just spent a week at the Cala Di Volpe and it was the perfect holiday for us. The hotel is small and friendly with an intimate atmosphere. Beautiful clean beach and 2 excellent pools.
I agree with the other reviewers........ it is a really special place.......

Stunning location overlooking the sea. The place was quite remote so that you couldn't go anywhere else without a car or maybe the bus. We had an apartment at the top of the hill so it did mean that you had to walk down the hill, but they would give you a lift back if you asked!! The apartment was beautiful, very clean, with marble floors throughout. We had our own little patio area to sit out in, complete with table and chairs and a sun lounger. All the staff were very friendly, even if most of them couldn't speak English, but we all understood each other in the end! The only disappointment was the food. What you got was fine but it was a bit repetitive throughout the week. Wine by the carafe was cheap but very drinkable.

Room Tip: Choose an apartment at the top of the hill for the view and peace and quiet. Choose one at the bott...
