If you plan on being near the Bavarian Alps (or need a reason to go!) this place has it all. Several spa experiences are available, full day activities for the kids, amazing restaurants, intimate live musical performances almost every night, absolutely stunning scenery, hiking, biking, and skiing (we were there in the summer though), and some of the very best best service we've ever had anywhere in the world. They go completely out of their way to customize your experience for you. We can't say enough great things about this beautiful place.

Dear Scott B,

I think the 10 days you spent with us were not enough! Next year we will have to make it two full weeks. It was such a treat to get to know you and Cynthia better, and we all look forward to your next visit, perhaps during the Ski Season?? Thank you again for all the cocktails......

From the minute we arrived when we were greeted by name at the side of our car to the moment we left we were bowled over by the whole service experience. We have stayed in many high quality hotels throughout the world, but this one stands above them all. The consistency of the experience has to be commended - all the staff without exception went out of their way to make us feel special and they really couldn't do enough to make us welcome or help us. The food was outstanding, plenty of choice and really delicious. Finally the facilities and location - again totally awe inspiring and memorable. This hotel is a gem and we will definitely return.

We jammed as much as possible into our too-short July visit and thoroughly enjoyed this spectacular gem in the Bavarian Alps. Service throughout the resort was nothing short of exceptional, yet completely lacking in the overly pretentious manner found in other 5-star hotels visited in Germany. The setting amidst the mountain greenery is astounding and, perhaps due to its seclusion, the atmosphere is remarkably relaxing. The rooms are incredibly modern and luxuriously appointed. The spa is welcoming with its zen-like approach from the hotel and is staffed with very professional masseuses. The spa rooms are large and on the day we visited the weather was so nice that the windows were thrown open wide and a gentle breeze wafted through to enhance the aromatherapy. A free concert in the magnificent Concert Hall featuring a trio of renown musicians set the tone for a delightful evening. Afterward we dined at the Italian-themed restaurant, Fidelio, and found the food amazing with superb wine offerings. The spacious room, a former stage venue, has been cleverly "divided" into intimate dining areas through the use of hanging fabrics which only enhance the views from the floor-to-ceiling windows. We were welcomed by the GM, Nicolai Bloyd, a fellow American with a gracious personality and other equally charming managers and servers. We followed up with after-dinner liqueurs in the jazz piano lounge. In the morning, we enjoyed a bountiful breakfast buffet and a leisurely walk through the grounds before a thunderstorm chased us back indoors to enjoy more of the endless amenities. This hotel/spa goes to the top of our deep list of world hotels and we will be sure to return soon and often.

you will feel in this place like you have entered different world. It is very peaceful all around. Mountains are as close as they could be and there is amazing trail through the valley - just behind the schloss.
Rooms are very nice and all place is very tastefully decorated.
Food in a buffet restaurant is the best you can imagine in a buffet- all main dishes are prepared for you like in the highest rated restaurant .
There is the best sauna I have ever been / and we travel around the world all the time / ...but for me nothing could most enjoyable then after sauna jumping naked to outside very cold small pool and than go to enjoy swimming into warm salty pool situated just next this one...still naked :-)
You can dream about it in America.

There are many other best and therefor we try to manage to stay in this place annually in May.

we've stayed for the first time and will be back soon. In short: this is the perfect place for disconnecting with your family (or alone). The location is breathtaking. When you drive the last meters on that little private street through the forest and after the last turn suddenly see Schloss Elmau there, I already got the feeling that we've found something very special there. But after the stay, I can say that this is among my favorite places in the world and surely one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. We had a Junior Suite for our son, my wife and myself, that could have been a tad bigger, but was big enough with a little entry area, a sitting area that was turned into our son's bed, a really comfortable bed for ourselves and a nice bathroom. There is service for entertaining children of any age during the whole day, if desired, they do stuff with them, let them play, go for hikes and have lunch or dinner with them in a group. The staff is exceptional and warm (not always the case in Germany), the property impeccable. And the food is out of this world, we had dinner and breakfast included. For both, the spacious dining hall features a 30m or so buffet of fresh breads and pastries, anything one could desire for breakfast - or salads and appetizers for dinner. One of the waitresses told us, that it got very hot during the heat wave in Germany and because it is an "eco-property", there is no air conditioning. That would be a minus. However, during our stay, we didn't experience any too-hot areas. Every day from a bit after noon (forgot the time), there is also the cake of the day, which is served free of charge at a beautiful, large room. There is a silent library, with interesting books and there are two Spas for adults and family-oriented. At night, you receive a list of activities for the next day, between 30 and 40 (each day!) that you can choose from, if you prefer to not do nothing. From the property you can walk right into the mountains or forest. It is really for disconnecting and spending quality time with your family. Thus it doesn't matter that it is about 1.5hrs from Munich Airport - and the next bigger town is Garmisch Partenkirchen.

Room Tip: choose the "Wetterstein"-wing, which will provide you with a really nice view on the mount...

Dear sju86,

You have been too kind to us! My favorite part of each day is coming out of the forest and seeing the castle situated below the mountains. It is a sight, just as you mentioned, however I thank you for all the additional commentary and ask that you please contact me directly before your next visit. I want to make sure the room is exactly what you want!!!

My husband and I went here in 2010 for part of our honeymoon and we returned this past week for a long bank holiday weekend. The manager left a hand-written note and some goodies in our room to welcome us back. It was just as amazing, relaxing, and accommodating as we remembered. Amazing food, an unbelievable picturesque setting, multiple ways to relax in the spas and pools, it just doesn't get any better. You can purchase spa treatments, or you don't have to spend any extra money at all and still enjoy plentiful steam rooms, saunas, salt water pools, Turkish baths, yoga and pilates classes, the list goes on. You can use the pools, no matter how cold it is outside, because they're heated. One of the best parts of Schloss Elmau is the cultural offerings. I enjoyed a breathtaking performance by soprano Dorothee Röschmann and pianist Mitsiku Uchida. We also took a hike up to Elmauer Alm, their little pit stop in the mountains. It's a quaint and cozy little restaurant with yummy traditional fare and beer, and it of course has an amazing view. A herd of sheep slowly made their way to the pasture next to us, it was really lovely.

As for food, the buffet is top notch - it's all gourmet. If you want a more intimate dinner, they have a few a la carte restaurants (one even has 1 Michelin star) that are wonderful. You can have an intimate breakfast in the badehaus (no children allowed here), or again have a plentiful, over the top buffet breakfast. Breakfast is included in the price of your stay, and I believe you get a €50 food credit for dinner every night, per couple. This covers the full cost of the buffet for two people, not including drinks.

I can't wait to come back here during the winter to enjoy all that they have to offer. When we have kids, we'll bring them, too, as it appeared to be a wonderful place for children. And for those of you who don't like kids, don't worry, while there is plenty for them to do here, they're actually kept quite separate from the adults-only areas and you rarely see them or interact with them.

If you're looking for a high-energy, round-the-clock, party animal type of place, this is not the place for you. It's a bit more refined, relaxed, intellectual.

Room Tip: The rooms on south and west sides have the best views.

Dear MachineForLiving,

The hand written note was the least I could do in order to welcome you back. We always feel great when a guest returns after a short hiatus and gives us the chance to wow them again. By wow, I simply mean to give them the opportunity to relax, to enjoy our many restaurants, the lounges, spas, concerts, etc. By reading your review, I feel we accomplished our goal. Please let me know personally before you return.

The Alps are there to greet you when you pull back the curtains in the morning; the Alps are there to challenge you when you sign up for a wonderfully guided day hike. Inside this tastefully appointed castle you find surprises at every turn: an herbal infused dry sauna among the several family saunas, a steamy herbal sauna among the several adults-only saunas; afternoon cakes and tea; a bookstore with a variety of classic and contemporary works, available in several languages; two libraries and countless relaxation rooms stocked with tomes on art, architecture, and adventure. Schloss staff put you at ease. And for lighter touches that keep this place feeling friendly? The billiards room also holds a foosball table and the little mat placed by your bed at evening turn-down wishes you Gute Nacht, Good Night, Bonne Nuit, and, magically, wishes you Guten Morgen, Good Morning, Bonjour when you rise!

Room Tip: The rooms on the upper floor are quiet, with outstanding vistas.

Dear CalWriterWanderer,

I am glad that you enjoyed the turndown service and the mat, which they placed at the foot of your bed, but what did you think of the turndown chocolates which they left on your pillow??? We were very happy to have you and your family visit us again after such a long break (nearly 8 years since your last visit), however I hope that not as much time will pass before you visit again. We will keep the saunas light on......
