“Ignore the Boobirds”
Reviewed February 3, 2014

Verandah Resort and Spa,
Ignore the comments about leaking showers since they should learn to soap before showering. Ignore comments about food since every night there are different theme choices with two or three alternatives every night. Ignore comments about hardness of beds because one could always get a mattress pad by asking.
Verandah Resort & Spa is an excellent facility, only seven years old with an eco-friendly emphasis. The staff (over 100) are helpful, genuine and appreciative of the visit. The owners own five star facilities throughout the Caribbean and cater to refined tastes – this is not the typical bar in the pool resort with rah rah facilities. This is a resort with an emphasis on quality, relaxation and safety. Unlike other resorts, tipping is not necessary but gratefully received. The staff too are helpful, gracious and appreciative of the opportunity to work. There is a good training program.
Verandah recycles everything and the resort has its own water desalination facility– it is self-sustainable and the imprint on the environmentally sensitive area of Antigua is minimal. The resort is super clean, abundant sport facilities, well laid out and facilities first rate (including 18 hole mini gold course).
Wi-fi is abundant in public areas and does not feel crowded nor are you treated like cattle.
Foodies will like vegetarian options, great jerk chicken and blue cheese. AAA strip loins were for the first time in the Caribbean. And, where else also can you get single malt to watch the tide come in.
There is a great many visitors from the United Kingdom which provides a degree of civility, not known among other resorts which are heavily populated with Americans and Quebecois. Congrats to General Manager Philipe for his constant presence. Don’t listen to the boobirds. Verandah is a great place for a holiday. We will be back.

My husband, our two year old daughter, and I loved every day of our 7 day stay at The Verandah. The staff was fantastic, the views were amazing, and the facilities were great. We had so much fun.

We saw some negative comments about the quality of the food, but we had a very different experience. I went to culinary school, and my husband and I both consider ourselves foodies--so we were preparing for the worst. Maybe it was lowered expectations, but we really liked the food--the breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Was it fine dinning? No--but for an all-inclusive, it was delightful. We ate mostly at the buffet, given it was easier with a 2 year old and we especially loved how the dinner buffet had a different theme each night we were there. Our favorite was Caribbean. There was also always steamed vegetables, fresh garden salads and a variety of other vegetable salads, giving vegetarians (which I'm not) many choices. Drinks were also impressive- not watered down and impressively strong. :)

Two things made the stay truly special:

1. We decided to hire a private swim instructor for our daughter through a company called Swalings. In just five, 30-minute classes, our 2-year-old daughter learned to swim underwater. When I practiced with her later in the day, everyone around the pool seemed memorized by the techniques she learned. We would highly recommend Swalings for swim lessons.

2. Guest services can set up babysitting, and we're thankful we took them up on that offer. We had a babysitter named Joy, and she really helped make the vacation. Our daughter loved her, which made us very comfortable having some afternoons to ourselves.

Three things that would have made this a 6 star review:

1. It took 30 minutes for the porter to come to our room with the golf cart, which made us pressed for time to get to the airport. You MUST get to the airport 2 hours early if you are flying on a Saturday--the place is packed.

2. The dress code for the premium restaurant (Nicole) requires dress pants, shoes, and a collared shirt. That's a bit of overkill for people going on a relaxing beach vacation. We weren't allowed to try this restaurant because we didn't pack accordingly. This wasn't a huge issue because we really enjoyed Sea Breeze--but it was a bit of a sour point.

3. This is definitely nit-picking, but I wish there were some clocks around the resort. We didn't want to carry around our phones and watches, so we usually had to ask people for the time.

Overall, we had a great time and would recommend the resort without hesitation.

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the main pool. That will give you good access to the main beach, the pool, and...

"Verandah" makes me think of peaceful relaxation and this resort delivered. This is a well conceived, well run, well trained operation. There are about 100 2-unit cottages spread over 30 well maintained, landscaped acres that make up this resort. Located on an inlet from the Caribbean, there are two small beaches, one at each end of the resort layout. There are 3 restaurants located together at one end of the resort with the main bar and near the main pool. A fourth casual restaurant and bar overlooks the beach near this end of the resort. Additionally, there is a small adult pool with several shaded tables that is great for reading. There is also an area that includes shuffle board, pool and foosball near the adult pool. There are kiddie areas separate from these areas. Cart paths wind through the complex affording plenty of walking/running opportunities. For those needing transportation, there are frequent carts that will take you where you want to go. I thought several of the negative reviews were unfounded. Here is my summary of myths and highlights:
1. The weather: as close to perfect as you can get. In January temperatures ranged from low-70's to low 80's. there was an occasional shower that would last less than 5 minutes.
2. The staff: friendly, accommodating, fun. If you are respectful and friendly, you can expect the same in return.
3. The food: we thought it was good overall, and some dishes were excellent. We ate most meals in the main dining area which is buffet style. At other all-inclusive resorts we have generally not cared for buffet style meals, but we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food here. We ate one night at Bucaneers which is a la carte and requires a reservation; we thought this meal was okay but not markedly better than the main dining. We ate one night at Nicole's which is the fine dining restaurant and charges a $30/person upcharge. Don't be scared away by this. It was worth it - great food, great service and a memorable, romantic evening. The beach bar and grill is more casual. We had dinner there one night and also had hamburgers there for lunch one day. we enjoyed both meals. What I remember most:the soups were all good. The surf and turf at Nicole's was very good. Be sure to make your reservations for the a la carte restaurants early the day before you plan to dine (between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m.) as they fill up fast.
4. Units: since there are only two units per cottage, they are very quiet. Housekeeping comes every day (although they only change bed sheets in the middle of the week). The units are clean. Our 1-bedroom unit had plenty of room and the furniture was fine. The beds are hard as others have reported. However, you can have an "egg-crate" mattress brought in if you want. The living area has a fan and the unit was plenty cool. Each unit has a verandah with table and chairs which we enjoyed. Our unit had only a partial view of the water and most are this way. There is a coffee maker in the room and they keep you stocked with coffee - we thought this is a nice touch. There is an in-room mini-refrigerator which you would need to stock.
5. Liquor: We liked the selection of liquor. They only serve island beer but it tasted good to us. The wine does not have a large selection but we thought it was okay. They had single malt scotch, Royal Crown whiskey, and several other good brands for hard liquor. While there generally are not wait staff at the pools and beaches, the bars are so close it is really not a problem. (Exception is the adult pool - its a 3 or 4-block walk away from the main bar.) Liquor is served in all the restaurants.
6. Family oriented: This is a family oriented resort. There are a lot of couples with young children. We are an older couple but having the kids around did not bother us. The resort is so big you can spread out and easily find a quiet spot. Also, we did not experience any drunks as we do in so many other all-inclusive resorts, and we'll take kids over drunks any day!
7. Transportation/nearby attractions: It is about a 30 minute drive from the airport. It cost us $28 plus tip for the two of us each way. You can hike to some nearby attractions and you can take a cab into town or to other attractions. The concierge can help you with all this.
8. Overall: we enjoyed it and would choose this resort again when we come back to Antigua.

Room Tip: If you can get a waterfront suite it would afford the best view. There is not a lot of flexibility...

Back home in the UK and missing Antigua and it's folk.

We've just had a wonderful week at the Verandah are sorry it had to end !

The resort is more like a village than a hotel and never seems busy or crowded, despite being well over 90% occupied. Never a queue for food or drinks and always loungers available in good locations in the shade or in the sun - apparently another 90 loungers are on order, so they'll be even more choice in the future.

Wildlife lives side by side with the hotel. The new addition to my list of Caribbean animals is a stick insect, found on our front door. From our balcony we could watch up to forty pelicans fishing in the bay, along with a great white egret and a frigate bird

I find it hard to see how people can write the very adverse feedback that one sees for all resorts in varying numbers. People must go looking for and exaggerating all the very minor things that one will inevitably find - sorry, but perfection doesn't exist.

The position and layout of the estate is great, as with the facilities, food and drinks. The staff, from the top of the pyramid to the lower levels are friendly and helpful. From the young trainee in the restaurant, to the friendly guy who gave us a couple of lifts in his buggy and turns out later to be the general manager, the friendliness and helpfulness can't be questioned. I'm sure if I was rude to any of the staff, any abrupt or off hand response from them would be well deserved.

There is a very comforting relaxed atmosphere around the whole hotel, with nobody trying to sell you photographs of your visit or chasing you to come back again. Quite rightly they are confident of you making up your own mind to come back.

We will happily go here again next year and are looking forward to that visit.

Room Tip: We had room 119 and it's views and location were great.

My wife and I have just returned from 7 days at the verandah resort and would return tomorrow! The pros -not too far from the airport but never heard any aircraft all the holiday, stayed in room 243 next to the bar main pool and restaurants sometimes noisy but never intrusive, fantastic view of the bay, nice to sit on the balcony and watch the pelicans fishing and the occasional mongoose hunting The resort is nicely set out so you can go for a pleasant walk or you can catch the frequent golf carts, the rooms are spacious and well equipped (they are however in need of a little TLC), the greatest asset is the staff, always polite, always friendly, nothing too much trouble, they are happy in their work and it shows. All the pro's are down to a guy who gave us a lift one morning down to the reception, we thought he was one of maintenance staff but he turned out to be the General Manager, Phillipe (hope that's spelt correctly). The only con is the North Americans who dont' appear to understand dress code and insist on wearing baseball caps at the table for meals! All in all a very good resort and holiday.

Went there before when resort was 1 year old. Lovely room with fantastic view, good food and nice friendly staff. The 2 beaches aren't the best as covered in seaweed. A lot noisier than before as resort is taken over by boozy noisy Americans which makes it hard to relax and read a book. At times thought I was in Las Vegas.Dress code at dinner is never adhered to. Probably last visit here.
