The location is lovely, the grounds are very well kept but the hotel itself is mediocre. The beaches look nothing like the photographs in the brochure, the main beach is small and all the loungers squashed in, it was sitting in a row at the cinema. no beach service it was a case of up the flights of steps and get it yourself. For anyone with young children in buggies it must be a nightmare to go to and from the beach. The rooms were clean and the views of the bay gorgeous
We spent five days here after spending seven days at the St James Club. I know where I prefer and it is not the Verandah. I just found the whole experience very disappointing, poor service, poor beaches and the night life was not great either, the best evening was the steel band , they were fabulous but as for the other nights well .....

We have just returned from a much needed winter break in Antigua. The resort is in beautiful, spacious and well maintained grounds. There are two lovely, safe and sandy beaches with a variety of water sports and plentiful sun beds and shade.
Rooms are spacious, well maintained and stocked with toiletries.
The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, always ready to assist with a smile, very unlike previous comments.
We had some very well cooked food in the grill bar (the pastry chef deserves a special mention). a meal in Nicoles restaurant was well worth paying a supplementary charge.
We felt Buccaners restaurant needed some attention, possibly specialising in true Caribbean cuisine rather than 'International' to differ from the buffet. Specialist nights in the main restaurant were fine as was the buffet breakfast. All in all a lovely week.
We also recommend Elmo's personal escorted tour around the island, a very good service.

Room Tip: Water view to see the brown pelicans diving for fish. Either phone guest services to book restauran...

Wow reading some of the bad reviews and wondering how experiences can be so different for some people who stayed at the resort at the same time.

We loved the resort start to finish - beautiful spot with plenty of options

Resort: easy check in and our room was ready. Staff were really warm and friendly - very happy group. We were offered a glass of bubbly as we checked. This is a great place if you have kids - one beach has water gear you can sign out complimentary (kayaks, sailboats, snorkel gear, baskits of sand and water toys for young ones). Of note they had a little powerboat on site so if anyone ran into trouble they would hop in the boat and go sort them out pretty quickly. On road 3 is a full outdoor games area with pool table, ping pong, shuffle board, etc... they also have a kids club on road 3 as well looks nice and safe and well cared for. This resort felt very safe.

A couple of mornings we were woken up to noise outside the room - gardeners start early here!!! could be a pain if you were a late sleeper, and it appears they are extending the water sport beach so there was some noise and construction there too.

The beaches are small but we always got a chair and they had plenty of towels to exchange - no issues with needing to reserve (thats a first). The water sport beach is seaweeding - and they try and remove some of the seaweed every other day (but hey thats nature folks!!) You can also go to Long Bay to swim in the waves and it has a longer beach. Go to the main drive of the resort and turn right its a 2 to 3 minute walk to the public beach. Note sometimes the cruise ships will come and let people off for swimming so it can get really busy - we did not experience this but others told us they did. You can also rent a chair for $5 dollars to put your stuff down, and you can also buy food there - dont bring valuables to the beach.

Devils bridge is also close to this property - it is located to the right of the sports beach about a 10 minute hike up a road - the fellas at the water sport area will show you the road. its easy to get too and a real experience - bring your cameras

This resort is hilly on roads 1 and road 2 which may be hard for smaller kids and those with mobility issues. However great excerise for those who do not have mobility issues - to get to the water sport beach there are stairs but the other beach is a flat walk with no stairs. I also hear the gym was good and they had some good classes.

Room: Bed was hard as indicated in other reviews but not unbearable. We had an unexpected water view room right off of our balcony - loved it! You can drink the water in Antigua - we did all week and no issues (we purchased a bottle of water on arrival and filled it with water all week and chilled it overnight in the fridge. There is a small kitchenette in each room (bar fridge, sink and microwave)

Food:Food was good lots of options at the buffet (its not a huge resort so its not a huge buffet). The Bucaneer restaurant was ok and I heard some people had reservation issues (we did not). Nicole's was good we had surf and turf. The service was really great at the buffett as soon as you walk in you are seated and given a tea or coffee pop as per your preference with enough for 2 people to have a few cups each.

Because its an Eco resort the music stops at 11PM but its a nice outdoor space to sit and have a drink after dinner. So if you are looking for wild and crazy nightlife this will not suite you but we met some great people and had a great time each night.

The spa is also good too

Off property trips - we did a day Trip Eli's Eco Tour and booked through our Tour rep, it was a good day out.

Room Tip: room 310 is a good room - close to everything

We just returned from our first trip to Antigua, and had great accomodations at the Verandah. We were in a duplex, each side having a large king bed, big bath, living room with couch with a small kitchenette on one side--counter, sink, coffee pot, micro etc. Each side had it's own balcony. There was transportation (golf carts) giving those who wanted rides at all times. Two smallish beaches, one with a bar, the other with water sports (kayaks, boards, catamarans, windsurfing). The bar for that beach was up the hill from the beach, and they also served food.

Let me say I've been to several all inclusives, so I am always leery of what buffet food and drinks will be like. The drink choices at Verandah were much more liberal than others I've stayed at. As for watered down, if you're drinking tropical drinks--pina colladas, daquiris etc--what do you expect? The amount of ice going in those is massive. I watched them pour--they were normal portions. At night I drank bourbon, straight, and it was not watered down. BTW people you are drinking bar liquor for mixes, not top shelf brands. Be real.

Food was plentiful and always available. The buffet selection was one of the best I've seen--not limited at all as other reviews have suggested-- plenty of choices, and a great staff always paying attention to you. All meals had a specialty station--omlets etc mornings , a pasta stir fry one afternoon, and a meat cuting station of some sort at night (roast beef, roast pork etc). Good lunch choices on a menu were available at the beach bar. You could also reserve for dinner a la carte there, or at The Buccaneer (a bit more formal), or Nicoles, the most formal and a $30 surcharge. We did not eat at Nicoles, but did eat at the other two. The appetizers at both could have been a little more varied, but the entrees were good, the salads were good, and we left satisfied.

The beaches were small and in a bay, not surf beaches. Long beach, an ocean front, is within walking distance of the main lobby. There is a national park with 360 degree meadows and crashing seas also within walking distance. A large pool is near the restaurants, and there is mini golf, billiards, table tennis, shuffleboard, and a gym on the grounds.

The staff were the best (shout out to Mickey especially)--they kept the grounds spotless, and went out of their way to make sure you were satisfied. Very friendly, and they really seem to care whether you like their resort. All in all this is one of the best all-inclusive values I've been to in the Caribbean. Some of the other reviews I've read here seem a bit snobbish and unrealistic, from my perspective.

My husband and I spent 7 nights at the Verandah Resort. It's a hugely impressive hotel, large grounds with 2 beaches, 2 pools and 4 restaurants. Transport around the resort is readily available via golf buggies. The rooms are large with balcony area, living area, kitchenette and good sized bathrooms with bath and shower. There's plenty to keep entertained, mini golf, tennis courts, gym and water sports. It is in close proximity to a national park and natural sight Devil's Bridge. The beaches are small and the main beach is polluted with seaweed which the staff try to clean up. Two minutes down the road is a larger and more impressive beach - Long Bay which I would recommend. Evening entertainment is varied but highlights were a steel band and fire dancer. Food in the buffet restaurant is a different theme every night, they try their best with a chef cooking station every night, otherwise there's two al a carte restaurants to choose from every night with an extra cost to dine in Nicole's restaurant but worth it! The only thing that ruined our stay was the staff; for those that we're polite, respectful and friendly, there were just as many who were the exact opposite. In particular main reception staff are very patronising and rude in their manner. Overall, had an amazing time in paradise and this wonderful resort, if the quality and politeness of staff improved, we would definitely return.

The resort was nice. The staff was not very friendly. I felt like I was impositioning them when I asked for things. The beach was nice, but you need to get down there early to get a spot. The smaller beach was nice and quieter.

We swam with the sting rays. I would absolutely recommend that. We always went to Shirley Heights.

The food was ok, but not great.

There is another beach within walking distance that has some snorkeling and shops to buy souvenirs at.

Definitely a good week.

Room Tip: we were by the pool and close to the busy beach. It was a great location, not the best view though.

Billed as a luxury getaway through Living Social, we were terribly disappointed in the Verandah. Cement pool area with no views, very little service, Boring rooms, and horrible buffet food. Reservations were a pain and we were told that were all full. Beaches are tiny. Frankly I'd have rathered just stayed at home. Left after one night and went to Sandals.

Room Tip: a different hotel!

Dear Valued Guests,

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments about your recent stay at The Verandah Resort & Spa. We do sincerely appreciate our guests’ feedback, even when pointing out ways in which we can improve; but we feel this review is inaccurate and unfair.

The Verandah Resort and Spa is one of the Caribbean’s most popular resorts as evidenced by our very high occupancy and return rates among our guests. The vast majority of our guests thoroughly enjoy the accommodations, dining options, myriad activities and the hospitality and graciousness of our staff. To compare the resort to a KOA is rather insulting and misleading.

The Verandah is a beautifully landscaped resort is situated on 30 spectacular acres of beachfront. In addition, there are 3 pools dotting the resort. There is literally something for everyone of all ages.

Most importantly, we sincerely care about our guests and their holiday experience. The Club is famous for its excellent staff, and for creating wonderful memories of an outstanding Caribbean holiday.

We read all of our guest reviews, and work diligently to make your stay with us a great one.
