“Great resort, fun island-can't wait to go back!”
Reviewed June 13, 2011

We stayed at The Verandah Resort 28.May - 4.Jun. The resort is great! The grounds are clean, the people are friendly, helpful, and genuine. Probably the best all inclusive food we've had at any resort (& we travel frequently to other Caribbean islands!) The accommodations are large and comfortable. We had a hillside suite but still got a glimpse of the ocean views. Fun watersports - paddle boats, kayaks, other small floats, and Hobie cats! This is a great resort for families or couples. 4 restaurants - the Seabreeze buffet, the Buccaneer, Nicole's (Men need long pants) and the Beach bar & grill. Men are required to wear collared shirts to all restaurants (exception is Nicole's, they also need long pants). Top shelf liquor at all times, ask & you will receive the drink of your choice!! There is an adult only pool (18 or older) & the main or family pool. Did not have any issues getting chairs. The only negative at the main pool (& it's a small one) is they could add a couple (& I mean like 2 or 3) standing umbrellas in the center as you walk to the pool. It was HOT! The tour desk is helpful and will help you book anything you want. we hired our taxi driver from the airport to the hotel to take us around the island for 3 hrs. We heard that you could book something similar (longer time) w/Elmo - go to the tour desk and ask for the "Elmo trip". There is also a kayak, snorkel & zip line trip - $130 per adult & approx. $90 per child. We didn't take this trip but met another family that did and they HIGHLY recommended it! You can also walk out the front entrance of the hotel (turn right), walk 2 minutes and you are at Long Bay, good snorkeling, shallow water so if you have kids they'll love it! Don't forget to take the walk from the beach area to Devil's Bridge, we did it twice and the views are fantastic! Beach is nice, you are in a "bay" area so the waters are calm and good for swimming and other watersports. There are actually 2 beaches at the resort, the 1st one is smaller and quieter (near reception/check in), they have beach volleyball set up, and the other is where the watersports are (closer to the main pool). Some people snorkeled around the area but not sure there is a lot to see, take the walk to Long Bay, it's worth it! The welcome orientation was informative, we were a bit scared at first they would try to sell us something but no pressures! Pure info and good at that! There is a cinema in the reception/check-in area and every night at 830p a movie is played. Tennis lessons for kids a couple times a week and they are building a putt-putt golf next to the tennis courts, it should be ready in about a month. Go to this resort and enjoy - don't forget to take at least 1 island tour though! You might see Eric Clapton's house like we did!! :) Don't forget - $28 departure fee (cash only), ages 12 & up! Pay when you check in at the airport.

The resort, the accommodation, the food and the staff were all hard to beat. 11 days were just not long enough and we thoroughly recommend this resort if you are going to Antigua. The choice of restaurants gave you plenty of variety, the entertainment was good and two great very clean beaches complete the picture.

Firstly, let me say that we stayed at the Verandah for 2 weeks and didn't have one thing to complain about at all. The resort is beautifully maintained, we liked the fact that it is eco friendly and that you can drink the tap water. Solar panels heat the shower/bath water and the air con turns itself off when you leave your cottage. The beaches are beautiful and clean, the water especially on long bay which is next to the Verandah is like bath water, the clearest i've ever seen so snorkelling is a must. The bar on long bay providing sun beds and umbrella's for much needed shade at midday does cost $15USD but the drinks are relatively cheap, a can of coke $3USD or rum and coke $5USD - it's nice for a change when staying in an all inclusive resort. So the Verandah has 4 restaurants, the main buffet restaurant was excellent serving a varied choice of different cuisines, we did start skipping lunch as were not used to eating three big meals so if you became peckish later in the afternoon they service afternoon tea by the main bar. Nicoles, you have to pay a supplement of $25USD each but lobster and fillet steak are on the menu AND the only restaurant with air con! then you have Buccaneers, which you can book once a week and it's free, we found the service and menu just as good as Nicoles, we actually preferred this out of all 4. The beach grill was ok, serving BBQ food and they hold a proper pool side
BBQ on sundays which we really enjoyed. There are three bars, the largest at the main pool and then two beach bars, serving branded drinks and fab cocktails, beware of the 'Blue Haze' it's delicious but is made with ice cream ! The fruity daiquiris were my favourite, adult slush puppies! The small beach next to reception was our favourite, it took us a few days to find it however, it always seemed to be just adults and very peaceful. The main beach is where you find the water sports, I liked to take out a single kayak and explore the bay, but couples take out a double and visit the other beach bar for a well deserved rest!
Our room was good, I called it a cottage. It was called “lime' all the cottages had different names which was quirky. We had a kind of had a sea view but if you want to be right next to the sea you have to upgrade. We were situated next to the adult pool which was a bonus. In the room, beds were comfy, I am very particular about my bedding so take it from a fussy person this was quality. All rooms have ceiling fans and air con, sometimes you didn't need air con so it was nice just to have the fan. I was especially happy with the coffee peculator, the easiest i've ever used -it was amazing sitting out on the verandah every morning with a fresh tasty coffee. Ladies the hairdryers are fine, in fact I did bring my own but it didn't work very well, must have been the voltage but my straighters (GHD's) worked fine. The bathroom was huge, two sinks and plunge bath. on arrival you receive token for towels, which you can change as often as you like, you must keep these tho otherwise they charge you. Make sure you have cash, if you spend anything at the hotel or at the shop you can charge it to your room and at the end of your stay if your paying with a card you are charged. Our rep was fab, we booked a trip through her and she gave us some useful tips. Any questions feel free to ask! We would definitly go back to this resprt again and reccomend this tranquil resort.

Spent 2 weeks at the Verandah at Easter and thoroughly enjoyed the stay. The hotel is set in wonderful extensive grounds and the rooms, though basic compared to similar starred European and Middle Eastern hotels, were comfortable and spacious enough for a family of 4. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is a little isolated but taxis easy to book through reception. The only minor complaints are the limited choice of food at the beach bar, outside dining on a more extensive basis would be good and an inside bar helpful on those rare ocassions a tropical storm passes.

Stayed here for two weeks late May to June and what a holiday!
I have been to three hotels in Antigua and this was definitely the best. It has only been open for three years now and everything is so clean and spotless. The villas are so spacious and every villa the same size/style, the upgrades are only the positioning of them on the site. It is like a little village and there is some walking to be done to get around, unless of course you are a bit lazy, in which case there are little buggys driving around to take you wherever you want to go.
Staff work endlessly cleaning everything on site and taking pride in what they do. The restaurants are all good with a huge choice.
The beach is just so beautiful as it is set in a little bay, so calm and clear. Pelicans do their feeding there now and again and its great to watch them dive bomb the fish in the waters. There is a huge amount of fish in and around the water's edge which tells you how clean the water is.
There is a good choice of watersports and the guys are willing to teach you anything you want to learn.
Live music every night which ends about 10.30pm so does not bother anybody.
Drinks are the real thing with many leading brands on offer. You can have champagne all day if you wish!
Very impressed with the service too, the staff are excellent.
Great for families and couples but not too good for the elderly.
I will definitely be returning.

We have just returned from a 9 night stay at the Verandah. We loved the layout of the resort which was very wel maintained and clean. the rooms were spacious, the air conditioning worked well, there were comfortable beds and nice view from balcony

The beaches and pools are clean with good watersports facilities and comfortable loungers with plenty of shade available, we didn't have to wait for Dinghy's or Catamarans very often

We found the food in the main restaurant to be adequate but not stunning, but the heat was unbearable, making dining in their sometimes quite unpleasant. The high level vents appeared to be blocked from outside meaning that the hot air was just being recirculated by the fans and had nowhere to go, this needs to be sorted out.

The beach bar was a lovely setting with good views over the water, but the food was very limited, a better selection of fresh food, not fried would be good for lunch

The staff seemed friendly and helpful and there was lots of information available from the tour desk for excursions

Drinks were generally good, although the beer was flat, sparkling and still wine were ok and cocktails good, not too strong for drinking during the day

Long Beach next door to the resort had the best snorkelling, and nice little gift shops

Overall we had a lovely stay, but would recommend that the temperature in the restaurant is sorted out very quickly

Service:

For the most part friendly. For the more serious staff, a tip brought big smiles the next day. We had amazing service after the first day (word traveled). My husband did have a long-sleeved flannel shirt stolen from our room (I had placed most of our possessions in suitcases with locks because we had things stolen during past vacations). I had not locked it up because I didn't see why someone would take that in a hot country such as Antigua. At first security implied that he may have misplaced it while drinking, which I'm sure could happen, but not on that day as I had seen in at I was locking up to leave the room for the first time that day. I had just awakened and hadn't had any liquor, and I had seen it. Anyhow, I did appreciate their follow up throughout the remainder of our stay. He did not get the shirt back.

Room:

Room # 323. It was a hillside room and when we had arrived, I asked how much it would be to upgrade to an oceanview. At $50 pp/per night, we decided not to. Were we ever glad! Our room was just across the 'road' from the buffet, main bar, a la carte restaurants, and one of the closest to the main pool and main beach. We only had to walk or take a shuttle to reception and gift shop.

The room was spacious, comfortable. Firm bed, which my husband and I like. Pillows a little lumpy, no big deal. Safe required batteries and where the batteries were stored had to be closed with band aids because someone had previously broken it (batteries falling out while safe closed would have been a problem). Loved the verandah and spent a lot of time there when back at our room.

Location & Amenities:

Wonderful location! We took a catamaran from St. John's to Barbuda and we could see the beaches near St. John's, including where Sandals was located, and the water was rough. At the Verandah, there is an inlet. The water has to cross a reef, which breaks up the waves, and then the area is more shallow, which warms the water a bit. You don't have crashing waves; the water laps against the shore like a lake. My husband was able to take out a hobie cat without a staff. When we hit an area where there didn't seem to wind and we were stuck, Carlos came and rescued us. We never did make it to the quieter beach.

We were there to relax, but couldn't avoid doing some excursions. One day we just walked along the beach and found the short path that led to the road to Devil's Bridge. We did encounter a pack of wild dogs (5 of them) who scared us at least as much as we scared them. Also saw goats and wild donkeys on the on the road (we found out on our last day from other travelers that they had witnessed the dogs killing the goats).

Another day we went to Long Bay Beach, which is a short walk from reception. There are several shops here.

We went to Jolly Harbour to take a helicopter tour of Montserrat. The pilots are Canadian. It was $240 pp plus taxi fare ($81). It was still worth it! My husband sat in the front with the pilot and is STILL excited about his experience. Its an amazing view! Afterwards, we did some shopping in Jolly Harbour while we waited for our taxi (we asked him to come and get us 90 mins after we expected to return from the flight so that we could look around Jolly Harbour).

We went on the catamaran Excellence to Barbuda on the Saturday. Amazing! I had been under the impression that the beach is made of pink sand, but it was tiny pink shells. They give you cups to fill if you want to bring back some of the pink beach...my husband half filled a grocery bag! The excursion includes stopping at a 17 mile empty beach, going to see a frigate bird sanctuary, and going to Princess Diana beach (where the shells are). The atlantic is rough, and because it is a 90 minute boat-ride, I would recommend not eating too much nor drinking too much alcohol. Reapply your sunscreen too. 45 SPF with a base tan and I still burned.

We liked the food and I gained a few pounds. For the most part it was very good, and what wasn't, I didn't finish and instead went back to the buffet to try something else.

There is no disco but local bands nightly (reggae, calypso).

We did not like the stolen shirt, wild dogs, dress-code in the evenings for the buffet restaurant (men have to have collared shirts or they will be refused entry), and the resort needed ashtrays. These were minor and did not have much of an impact on our stay.

We loved everything else. I would absolutely go back, and I would get the same room.

Room Tip: #323/324: obscured ocean view, near most amenities
