“Enjoyable Holiday”

We stayed at the jolly beach resort between feb 24 and march 10 2014 and having read the reviews we sort of knew what we were getting but could not be absolutely sure.
After staying there for 2 weeks i would agree with most reviews in that the location next to the sea and the grounds you cannot fault and also in that catergory i would say the staff aswell as they were always polite to us and served us with a smile. The negative side is the buildings and rooms are showing their age and could do with a revamp and we liked to use the gym in the mornings and again its all there but the cardio equipment needs replacing or at least repairing as it is not acceptable just to put a sign on it saying "out of order" and it stayed like that for 2 weeks.
The main swimming pool also needs some attention as every patio slab has moved since it was originally laid and looks shabby but the pool itself is clean.
Overall the food was good and there are a few choices and our favourite was lydias the seafood grill which i think had the best view lookindg out at sea,
There is a restaurant with an indian influence(lightly spiced) which is also good and a self service buffett restaurant which is not always as hot as you would like but makes up for it in choice.
The italian is a strange one as i know what it is trying to do but in my view does not seem to pull it off and is the only one that requires you to dress up which is not a problem as standards have to be maintained (collars and trousers for men) but the food is good.
We were there when the england cricket supporters were there which made for a good atmosphere round the bar at night and even with this influx of people the service was still very good and the longest we had to wait to be seated was only 5 mins.
You have to remember this is a 3 star hotel and for the money they charge i think it is very good

Room Tip: Always wherever you go work out if you are sleeping and changing in your room or living in it

Having read lots of reviews before our holiday, were not sure what to expect!! It was lovely, great location, on the beach looking at the beautiful sand and sea. Staff were so friendly, could not fault them at all.All the restaurants were good too. No shortage of food and drink anywhere. Yes some parts were a little tired, but the location, weather, staff and food more than made up for this. Would definitely go back.

How happy we were last year booking for the 1st time ever a travel agent holiday, and to the Caribbean too. Got home, looked up this hotel on Tripadvisor - oh deary deary me. After reading countless - well 60 or more - reviews we got an overshadowing feeling of gloom, so much so we went back to the travel agent with a view to cancelling. Long story short, stuck with it and stayed at JBR first 2 weeks of February 2014. Several points - mainly being we now have seen and tried for ourselves. Having read so many "Marmite" reviews on this resort (to those who are confused - marmite is a spread for toast that people either love or hate - no middle ground) Andi and I love marmite. Going to make it short and sweet because it has been covered in 100's of reviews. Its 3-star NOT 5 !! WIld birds exist in every country, not just the JBR in Antigua, and will actively search out food - they have yet to be trained to single you out just to mar your holiday, and if anything, have a greater natural right to be there than us tourists, regardless of how much we earn. Any place with a high staff level (including big stores in your own home town) will have people of various sentiments. Not all smile, all day, non stop - but the smile you do get is warm and honest - not a paid-for, plastic, synthetic, spray-on one !!! Our room was CLEAN, not shabby, and serviced daily, water was hot with good pressure. Would never have starved in a lifetime - plenty to choose from - not all to everyones appeal - hence the word CHOICE. Have read reviews that worried us before we went - we laugh at them now and mutter unpolite things under our breath. So, simples, people who are thinking what to do. Firstly - look in the mirror. What do you want, what is your standards, how do you get on with people normally??? Andi and I can easily do 5-star and gold taps - we choose not to, not through expense, but through "looking in our mirror". Would we return to Antigua - definitely - it's a safe heaven on earth populated by beautiful people who reflect the warmth of the climate (depending how you treat them!!). Would we return to JBR - you bet we would. 3 invites from staff to go shopping with them, go to the cricket with them, go home with them to meet the family - sound like grumpy staff to you??
Summing it up - we would return because we are not hobo/tramps, have a certain basic standard, insist on cleanliness and found that JBR has all of that with loads to spare. Antigua, the sea, the beach, the climate makes up for every shortfall there could be.
There - got that off me chest !!!
Should anyone want to contact us - feel free to do so - it will be our honest opinion and observations -but remember - we are not you.

Room Tip: some rooms are close to night time entertainment - if music etc up to 11.00pm'ish is an issue th...

Travelers that have been to an island quickly learn that no one is in any particular hurry to make things happen, thus the phrase "Island time". This is taken to the extreme at the Jolly Harbor. Some of what follows will sound pretty negative, but I will say that overall we had a great time. The beach was spectacular, most of the staff were very nice and hospitable, borrowing catamarans/kayaks went smoothly and the entertainment was decent. Check in took 45 minutes [there may have been 5 couples ahead of us and there were 3 people working the desk]. The room was clean and the food was very good [the Indian Restaurant was excellent!] with the exception of food on the buffet not being very hot. Shortages and inventory problems occurred throughout the week - they ran out of Kahlua, blue curacao, French fries, soap, salmon, tissues and there was only one day that we had enough towels. One morning we actually had to chase a maid down for toilet paper - she had none on her cart and went into 3 rooms to find an extra roll before going off to a different location where they presumably had some stored. Plan ahead if you see the roll getting depleted!!! TIP - bring an insulated travel mug. Your beverage will stay cold and you won't have to refill the 6 oz. cups they give you as often.

We stayed here in Feb this year for 2 weeks, Check in took longer than you would expect and the reception staff were not at all friendly. The first room we were given was already occupied so we went back and were given another room. Been in the room for about 10 mins when the door opened and another with 2 other guests were stood there.
Hemispheres is the main buffett restaurant and the food is not hot but luke warm apart from the burgers at lunch that were made to order. The 3 other restaurants are much better but you have to book in advance.
Rooms are cleaned daily and our maid Vanessa was brilliant but some of the others didn't do as good a job. Yes the place needs to be refurbished and given some TLC but is it not a bad hotel or resort. Alvin is one of the bar staff and should be on the main bar all the time as he is wasted in the restaurant, he interacts with all the guests and you can have a good laugh.
Although we didn't use the beach it was amazing If you normally get bitten by mozies then make sure you take a good repellent like the green off.
Overall good hotel and resort and we would go back again.

Just arrived home after staying here for 10 nights for cricket. Rooms were tired, need updating, no tea/coffee facilities and shower flooded the bathroom every time we used it. Food was awful apart from in the a la carte restaurants, but the staff were brilliant and the location makes up for all the niggles. I was a bit peed off with people getting up at 5am to put towels on loungers and then only using them for a couple of hours. To sum up - fantastic beach, lovely staff, great location - just let down by tired rooms and awful food in the main restaurant and the locals are brilliant. Should also supply free beach umbrellas for when selfish people who bag all the shades every morning. And get out and try the roadside cafes and fruit stalls - only time you will get Caribbean food here and it's lovely.

Me and a friend we went there for a weekend just to get a break from are busines , we were not expecting the best place we were just hoping for something nice , but when we arrived we we're shocked the view was beutiful the staff were so friendly all inclusive made it even more enjoyable unlimited bar etc .

But when it came to the actual rooms I'll be honest not so good small beds, bad tv , remote did not work etc.
But overall the place was the best ....
