“From a 'Southern Gentleman'!”
Reviewed March 10, 2007

First of all the 'don'ts:
Don't book this if you want a huge complex;
Don't book this if you want loud misic and 24 hour partying;
Don't book this if you want crowds and a fight for sun beds.
Don't book this if you want air conditioning.
But...
Do book this if you want peace and quiet and some lovely views. The cottages are rustic but adequate and the food is excellent for an all inclusive resort. The staff are great - Dave the Barman [Thanks for the Southern Gentleman Bourbon!] Kenroy the Restaurant Manager Kerry and all the others - and the infinity pool is divine. The bird life is fantastic and the beaches superb.
The other guests were all friendly [Hi Dave and Jane & Jerry and Chris!] and we will definitely return.
A week passes too quickly!

We stayed at the Cocobay Resort 12-17 February and had a great time! Antigua is lovely and the people are very friendly, kind and outgoing.
The photos of the resort do not do it justice; it is cozy and quaint, but built on a cliff peninsula surrounded by water on three sides.
Our room was an Oceanfront Cottage, and the French doors at the foot of our bed open onto the porch (with hammock) and the crystal blue bay beyond. There was NO tv, telephone or clock in the room, but ample storage space and a huge bathroom.
The food was OK, nothing to write home about; the breakfast buffet was so-so, and the lunch and dinner was a bit better. The menu was weird, I guess it was matched to the tastes of the European guests who infest the place...LOL! The food was bland European fare, nothing spicy or ethnic like you'd expect in the Caribbean.
For good eats close by, we went to the Dennis Bar which you can see from the hotel. The owner and Chef, Dennis Thomas is a good guy and serves up some tasty, inexpensive island food.
For VERY expensive but VERY good food, visit Chez Pascal, a fantastic French place about 30min north of the hotel.
Rent a car! The cabs will rob you blind, $20 r/t for a short ride to the market or casino at nearby Jolly Harbor.
The beach is slamming, the water is warm and getting warmer as spring approaches, and even though the resort was full, it never appeared crowded or congested.
The staff is outstanding, and I would give Cocobay an "Excellent" rating except for the food. I'll definitely go back for the Antigua Carnival in the end of July.

This was our third trip to Cocobay, and many of the things that we liked were still there - great food, mostly friendly staff, and of course its great location. However, the reception staff were mostly (with one exception) hopeless, not at all interested in dealing with problems. It's best to go straight to management if you want something resolved quickly. The water sports supervisor was also lazy and rude, often to be seen sleeping on the beach, rather than asking guests if they wanted to use the equipment, and offering a lesson for beginners. More seriously, if you get into trouble when using the Hobie Cat, be aware that help may not be readily available, because although the hotel has a rescue boat, it has no outboard motor! This is a disgrace - if Cocobay offers this facility, then they should have the appropriate safety equipment. We paid for a "superior" room, but the one we were initially given had a very restricted view, and reception were not interested at all. The Virgin Holidays rep sorted it out on our fourth day. Staff were mostly great, especially Vincia, Kenroy, David and Rene. Food still excellent, house white wine still terrible. Why not offer a couple of choices for both red and white?

We have just come back from what can only be described as a week in paradise. We arrived at cocobay after a long flight from the UK to be met with such a warm welcome, our bags were taken to our little wooden bungalow by a very strong young man who was at the top of the hill before we had even started out.Our bungalow"Monserratt 1" was overlooking the sea on the West side of the promintory and we had a clear view of Monserratt in the distance,it was divine. The room was lovely with a king size bed and a bathroom twice the size of my kitchen back home. There was a wonderful balcony with 2 nice wooden chairs and a hammock, and beautiful flowers all around.
We too were concerned after reading some reviews.
Yes...there are sand flies...and some less well aware people had been bitten dreadfully, but we both took vitamin B1 tablets before we went and whilst we were there, and we also sprayed ourselves with 100% deet if we went to the beach and also at night. My husband came home without a single bite on him and myself who is usually eaten to bits by mosquito,s abroad only had 6 sandfly bites, the mossies left me well alone...
And yes there are birds in the restaurant especially prevelant at breakfast time, but OH,how beautiful are they, and as long as you don,t walk away from your table leaving food uncovered they won,t be a bother to you, after all you are eating in an open air restaurant that has an ambience all of it,s own,so you can,t expect the birds not to be there too.
The food at Cocobay is excellent, breakfasts consist of a full english if thats what you want....there is a vast array of fruit on offer ,crossaints, muffins etc, also cereal...and there is an egg chef on hand to cook your eggs as you require them....
Lunch is a buffet with various dishes with loads of choices....
Dinner at Cocobay is an experience not to be missed...the food is presented to you in what can only be described as an art form,it would happily grace any table of a first class London restaurant, and the infusion of flavours was so good.......
A tip about dinner...put your name down for your evening meal as you pass reception in the morning on your way to breakfast...they stagger the amount of people they have in there so as to give first class service..so if you want an early dinner..make sure your name goes in the book before 07.30am.
A few tips to make your holiday as enjoyable as ours.........
Bottled water is not part of the all inclusive package but you can buy this very cheaply at reception and put in the fridge in yoyr room.....
Pick up your pool towels before breakfast as they run out quickly...
Take pegs to cover any holes in your mosquito net..although I must say mine had none but I was glad of this tip....
Take a face flannel if you use one as the hotel doesn,t provide them....
Stay away from grassy areas of the beach....especially at Dusk and Dawn as this is where most of the sandflies are.........
You may even if you are lucky meet "the sugar birds" as I named them,if you leave your door open they will come into the room and go straight to the sugar packets in the basket on top of your fridge...they know the difference between tea bags, creamer and sugar, some of them will even open them on the mat and eat it,but mostly they just fly of with it,I used to open one and put it on the veranda for them, and just sit and watch them, they are so tame, even the lizard we had loved sugar, his long tongue was always licking it.
And lastly...to the best beach.........
Wander along the beach towards the restaurant on the headland, then walk across a small bit of scrubland and you will find a lage deserted beach...this is the one to be on if you want peace and quiet and sheer beauty...but the locals do use it at the weekends...
Myself and my husband have just had a holiday in paradise,I hope you do too,and if you go please say hello to Dave the barman for me..he must be the happiest guy in all the Carribean, and he is certainly well loved by all who meet him....
ENJOY.......

We have just returned from Cocobay last week after a most enjoyable stay.

We had been following the reviews over the last few months and were concerned about the problem with the bugs. We have been to the Caribbean a few times and we always get bitten. So quite naturally we were quite concerned. We needn't have been. Yes we did get bitten but there were no mosquitoes just sand flies. We took half the chemist's shop with us so were prepared for much worse. We were advised by a Health shop to take garlic tablets but we weren't convinced that they worked. As I said the bites weren't half as bad as we had expected them to be. Certainly not as bad as the mosquitoe bites we got in Tobago last year.

When we arrived after a most enjoyable flight with Virgin we were met by very friendly reception staff and shown immediately to our "shed". We were really impressed with ours (room 6). It certrainly had the wow factor. We paid extra for the sea view room and it was certainly worth it. We woke each morning, pulled the curtains back and had a fantastic view of the bay. The way the rooms are set means that you aren't overlooked at all, although we must admit, the walls are a bit thin and you can join in with the conversation with your neighbours next door!

We know what we want from a holiday. If you like small friendly hotels and want to just relax then this is the place to come. It certainly ticked all the boxes for us. There are plenty of water sports if you want to participate but you don't get any hassle if you don't.

There is plenty of room and sunbeds on the beach but if you want a bit of privacy just wander round to the next beach, only 2 minutes away, and you will have it all to yourself. It was just like paradise. There are no sunbeds so not many people go there.

The food was good for a 3 star. As it's only a small hotel you don't get a lot of choice but it was all well cooked and presented. The only downside we found that on an evening the food was a bit "samey". It was mainly caribbean food and whilst it was enjoyable we got a bit sick of it by the end of the 2 weeks.

The staff were a mixed bunch. David the barman is one of the best we have come across. He always filled your glass by the time it got empty and was very pleasant. Always had a smile on his face.

The restaurant staff were a bit gloomy at times. Have to say the male staff were friendlier than the female staff, but having visited the caribbean before we know this is their way.

Do go on the circumnavigation trip of the island. We went on the Virgin ahoy trip and it is one of the best trips we have been on. The crew were really informative and very funny. Nelsons Dockyard certainly looks better from the sea than on land!

All in all we had a great holiday and made many friends. My thanks to Emily for lending me the book "Marley and Me". It certainly made me laugh and cry! As we rarely go back to the same place twice as there are so many other places to see we probably won't return, but certainly recommend it to anyone wanting a quiet relaxing and friendly holiday., the best part for me was the accommodation I'll never go in a high rise hotel again!

Meals very good, especially the evening meals, never had the same meal twice over 2 weeks. Although, birds a problem at breakfast & lunchtime.

Cottages basic, but very clean and bed very comfortably.

Dave the barman very efficient and knows his cocktails.

Recommend the nature walks with the Medicine Man.
