We stayed at Cocobay April 14-21. The airport was fairly well organized. We had filled out both sides of our immigration papers and we were into a taxi within 30 minutes of landing. The ride was about 30 minutes and there was refreshing towels and rum punch waiting for us when we arrived. We were fortunate enough to be given Chattel House for our first night and then upgraded to a lovely Seafront Cottage for the remainder of our stay. Paradise found……. The room was very quaint, the bed was extremely comfortable and we loved the shower that opened to the outdoors. Ours was very private so we used it often, however I am not sure that all cottages were so fortunate. Each cottage seemed to have their own hot water tank below the cottage, so hot water was abundant and the pressure was great. We had a mini-bar which was stocked regularly with pop, water and beer. Our first night we were welcomed with a bottle of sparkling wine. Our second night, and our anniversary, we returned to find that the staff had placed candles and flower petals all over our room. So romantic! The plunge pool was cool, but not cold. We actually used it quite a bit even though the sun wasn’t always out during our visit. The pool was still comfortable. I kind of wished I had brought ear plugs as the combination of the crickets, frogs and whatever other night creatures were singing and then the birds who took over when the sun came up, combined with the water hitting the rocks beneath our cottage was a little more than I am used to, but wouldn’t stop me from returning! I just used the frequent waking’s to remind myself I was in paradise and would soon be back home, so enjoy it now! Our last night, staff brought a bottle of rum punch and some toasted coconut to enjoy on our balcony.
The food was great. Breakfast was from 7:30 – 9:30 and buffet style with 4 main choices along with the egg/omelet station and a selection of muffins/danishes, cereal, fruit. Lunch was similar and was available from 12:30 – 2:30 with a similar set up to breakfast. There were panini type sandwiches available at the lower pool bar in the afternoon and tea at the main bar at around 4 or so, but we did not try this. The sandwiches were great and very unique. Dinner was at select seating times, which you would sign up for each morning. The first sitting was at 6:30 and the last was around 9:00. They had a set menu each day with 3-4 appetizers, one soup, and 3-4 main courses. For an additional charge, you could always have tenderloin, shrimp or lobster. We were fortunate enough to have been given this privilege with no charge. Perhaps this was a perk of booking directly through the hotel? Either way, we sure took advantage and were most grateful at our good fortune. The lobster and shrimp were amazing! The drink menu was limited but we certainly had no real issues. There was always something good to drink. The house wines were Chilean and surprisingly good.
The pools were very quiet. The upper pool seemed to be more popular and loungers were a little more difficult to find there, but the lower pool always had loungers available. The beach was absolutely stunning. There were always loungers under the palapas. The palapas could use a little tlc. Robert was there to assist with the watersports, towels, drinks and many other chores. He was great! You can walk a little ways down the beach past Dennis’ to Big Ffryes beach. It was deserted and even calmer than the resort beach (Little Ffryes). Check it out. It was fun to walk the beaches looking for shells. If you go behind the resort you can meet up with Valley Church beach. Another amazing and practically empty beach.
The evenings were very quiet. There was a manager’s cocktail party on Thursday night which included a few vendors and a steel drum band. There was only one other night that there was live music, otherwise, most just visited with the other guests in the evening. Very quiet and relaxing.
We took the hotel shuttle into St. Johns’ one morning. It leaves at 9:00 and returns around 12:30 and is $10 us per person. We quite enjoyed St. Johns’ and almost wished we had a little more time there.
We tried to do the dinner on the beach, but our reserved night was rained out. Oh well, gives us a reason to return sometime in the future!
The weather was a little iffy. We heard that the island had been in a bit of a drought prior to us arriving, so the rain was welcome. Again, it gives us reason to return. We had been told that the forecast online always calls for rain, but it would be a 10 minute shower and the sun would come out again. This wasn’t always the case for us, but it was still warm and we still stayed on the beach reading under a palapa.
There were a few outstanding points to this resort, the first being the sheer beauty of the place. The second is the staff. They were outstanding. They always remembered and referred to you by name. Their inquiry as to how your vacation was going was very genuine. Hello to Melissa, Tony, Robert, Joailin and anyone else we may have forgotten. You provided us with an experience we aren’t soon to forget!
