If you stay at La Veranda in Phu Quoc, it will have been money well spent.
Excellent rooms, grounds, restaurant, staff, and of course, beach. This is one of the few hotels where great effort is put into the quality of their food for all meals of the day. Organic ingredients, locally sourced, seasonal, fresh, authentic, homemade...these are all words to describe the food served at La Veranda, and it is delicious. The staff are all excellent and professional. We did get a spa treatment, which was also wonderful and professional.
We stayed in a villa, which was large and spacious with high ceilings, a large and lovely bathroom with separate shower/bath, and romantic but necessary mosquito net hanging over the bed. An excellent bonus was the inroom dvd player and dvd selection at the front desk (the selection could be better :)The only negative point of the villas is that the shutters do not close completely, and therefore at night can be seen into slightly. The villas are hidden down lovely little paths lined with tropical foliage and flowers, with banana-laden trees and the sun filtering through.
The swimming pool is a good size and well designed, but the real fun is at the beach. The resort is on the west side of the island, where the waters are rougher and it is fun to play in the small waves, and is wonderful to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean. We rented automatic motorbikes and drove to the east side of the island to Bai Sao, which are calm waters and incredibly beautiful, well worth the 30min trip.
Phu Quoc is a wonderful place to visit, it is so enjoyable to be lazy on the beach, or motor around and explore. La Veranda is where I would stay.

After three weeks of travel across Vietnam, we finally came to this amazing place La Veranda. If I had to imagine my perfect hotel, this would pretty much be the place.

La Veranda is not cheap, but you get value for your money. We stayed five nights in a Deluxe Room (around USD190/night). The size of the room is just okay, and has everything you need.

The entire property is built in the French colonial style, with breathtaking views over the sea from the garden and the Pepper Tree restaurant.
At breakfast, they offer anything you could possibly think of. And for dinner, just try anything on the menu - you will not be disappointed!

Also, the beach is kept clean all day long (which is not often the case on Phu Quoc). We mostly stayed at the pool area (part of it was under maintenance in July 2009).

In general, the service at the hotel is exceptional (e.g., free pick-up and transfer to the airport; mailing of postcards, free internet facilities, massages for a reasonable price, etc.).

Stay as long at the hotel as you possibly can! And don't be too early at the airport - there is nothing to do there.

We stayed here for 4 days in the middle of a 2 week stay in Vietnam and had a great time. The grounds, rooms, and buildings are beautiful and have a great classic look. We had a bungalow with an ocean view and would highly recommend going that route as opposed to the standard rooms, which look a bit like a normal hotel. The bungalows come with their own large patio that is great for relaxing in the evenings or for an afternoon nap. Service was stellar. Food was delicious and not too pricey for a resort of this calliber. I would point out that this is a very quiet resort. Thus, if one is looking for a party, this definitely isn't the place. Also, while I enjoyed Phu Quoc, it probably doesn't warrant a trip in and of itself. However, it's great for a short stopover while traveling through Saigon.
