Arcadia Phu Quoc Resort
Ranked #37 of 50 Hotels in Duong Dong
Reviewed October 11, 2013

The Arcadia is a beachfront property, but it needs to improve in several things.
1) the personnel, seemed quite rude or like they didn't wanted you to be there, and most of them without any knowledge of English. In case you wonder if the rudeness issue was with us, no, you can see the same attitude with every single foreign guest independently of which country they were from.
2) breakfast: really poor, at least 3 days in our stay they didn't have coffee and I had to bring some instant coffee which I previously purchased. Even funnier, they took it with them and brought me a small cup with very little coffee, so I think they also use it for other guests? No idea. You have to ask for butter, or a piece of cheese, and hope that they will understand (thanks to technology and their translation software!) The good thing is that they make very tasty omelettes and there is some local soup which is not bad.
3) Dinner: non existent. They told us that we need to ask what they have for food since many days they don't get new products (still, bars, restaurants and other hotels nearby did have a nice selection of both local and foreign food...) One day they said there was fish available. Other day, nothing. I stopped asking once I found the amount of restaurants near by.
4) Room: before going to bed, make sure that you remove all the bugs that usually will be around. At least the ones in the bed. Once it was raining so we stay in our room and we saw how they cleaned it. They didn't change the sheets... Also, don't get scared by the lizards scrolling in the walls (at least they eat the mosquitoes!)
5) Bathroom: Shower only, with almost no pressure, so it took really long to remove the sand from the beach. Just be patient (also be patient to get some hot water)
6) One day, since they didn't have any food in their restaurant and we had some leftovers from previous day from another restaurant, we kindly ask them to warm it for us. To our surprise, they charged 100.000 Vietnam Dong for just putting the food in the microwave for a few seconds... I know is not that much money, but if you DON'T offer dinner, you have a poor breakfast...I need to bring my own coffee...at least be kind enough to warm the food free of charge...
7) The beach yes, amazing. Even better than most of the hotels in the same area (I know this is just about being lucky with the tides or repairs around, but is really nice). They have some lounge chairs in the sand, and there is not that many people. They have towels available and you can get some refreshments from the bar.

If I recommend another hotel? Probably, but it all depends if you only want a very nice beach without people, or if you prefer a nice comfortable no bugs hotel.

Room Tip: The new bungalows are very nice, as well as the room number 10 with direct beach view.

We stayed for 9 nights in beach front villa and had best villa on complex no 11. Room is superb bathroom a bit quirky but large and lovelly.kept very clean bed linen and towels changed daily. There is very little English spoken at complexand I suppose it adds to the charm. very cheap restaurants on beach and surrounding areas.Restaurant on site ok but could do with better organisation and management. massage on beach £3 for 1 hour The night market is good and eating there is great fresh fish and full menu.
If you are looking for a laid back relaxing holiday this could be for you people are freindly prices very reasonable. major development is taking place on the Island and one can guess it will lose its charm as this happens.

Room Tip: beach front bugalows and villas are superb

The grounds are lovely and the accommodation clean and modern. Our room had an ocean view an was quite large, though cracks in the door let a few bugs and lizards in.

The staff was basically non-existent. At first we thought they were really rude, but really they just don't understand any English. Simple questions or requests were met with a blank stare and a shoulder shrug.

Breakfast was okay. Though the food sat out uncovered and unheated for the duration of the buffet.

If you stay here be aware that you are on your own! Maybe since we visited in the low season they had the B team running the show? The Cassia cottages are just a few step up the beach- they look nice and are not much more expensive.

LOCATION: Nice, tranquil spot on Long Beach, though in April the whole island was quiet. A short moto / cab ride to Duong Dong for the night market etc; I usually am quite happy to walk reasonable distances, but it looked very far. There are convenience stores, travel agents, and an ATM a few minutes walk along the side-street leading to the resort. The beach and sea are gorgeous, with the resort having a limited enough capacity that it never feels busy.

FACILITIES: Deluxe double (ocean view) room. Tastefully designed, well appointed, spacious rooms, though the omission of a bathroom door really is puzzling in light of the fact that there is almost a direct sight line from the patio doors and outside path to the toilet! This means all but the most open-minded will feel the need to close the curtains prior to using the bathroom, and many couples will find the arrangement sometimes a little too intimate! The bed was a bit too hard (even by Asian standards), but the AC was good, there were a broad range of TV channels, the wifi worked well (including on the beach), and the sitting area at the front of the room provided a nice spot to relax. Housekeeping standards were high, and the room was clean.
External noise was a problem. Workmen were using drills and other electric tools on the path every morning, including at 8am, which seemed bizarre when it would be pretty obvious to management that their own guests would likely be asleep just metres away. That groups of workmen would be right on the edge of the terrace facing directly into the room for hours on end meant that the curtains often needed to be kept shut.
Breakfast was adequate, rather than good, but the nightly barbequed fish on the beach was reliably excellent (fantastically cheap by Western standards, of course, but the night market costs much less). I found the staff to be friendly and good natured, though with English proficiency being very limited beyond the one or two staff designated to actually interact with guests. I do concur with other comments that this is certainly not a 'service oriented' resort, with service on the beach seeming to be almost non-existent beyond the provisions of roaming hawkers (who, to be fair, are not invasive).
I would avoid the night squid fishing tour offered by staff at the resort. It really was poor, with there being no identifiable English speaking guide on the boat, and no instructions provided. It just seemed to be tourists milling around a little confused as to what to do (though I did catch a fish through beginner's luck, so was happy enough).

Despite its shortfalls, and the sense that this place could do so much better with improved on-site management and a better understanding of the demands of their guests, I personally like it, and would still recommend it to those who don't necessarily expect a full resort service, and are willing to make the most of the beautiful surroundings. I'd probably warn off honeymooners, and couples on a R&R beach break, as the place won't meet your expectations in terms of being catered for; I'd say it is better suited to those looking for a relaxed, informal setting, where you won't be pestered, but where you will have to do things yourself, or make sure someone does them for you. It's a shame, because Phu Quoc is essentially a couples' destination, so it limits the pool of potential guests who would actually be satisfied here. I spoke to a member of staff who said that they hate the months when the domestic Vietnamese travellers stay (July and August), as they are far more demanding than Westerners; I think this mentality fails to understand that Western guests are demanding, but just may be less vocal (imagine that!), and leave unfulfilled.

Room Tip: The ocean is only potentially visible from the terraces of the 'ocean view' bungalows!

I stayed here with my wife and her family. I booked two rooms, the first room was big, had an ocean view, and some of the extras you look for in a nice hotel. The second room was small, no view, and was missing some of those extras we had in our room. There was a big difference considering they were the same price. There were plenty of beach chairs, however they never set them up with the mattresses. You had to go get them and drag them down to the beach and put them on your chair. This is kind of a pain with 7 people. The most important thing though is there is no service what so ever. I read this in some of the comments and decided that I do not demand much service and I am always nice so I usually get good service anyhow where others might not. I was wrong, always having to go and get someone or yelling at them from across the room. It is basically a do it all yourself resort if you need something. For the price we paid, which wasn't much I believe we could find a much better place. It is beautiful though and the room was clean and adequate including mini bar and safe. I will try somewhere else for sure next time.
Definitely go to the night market for a seafood dinner. Definitely go to the waterfall, they will pack your food and drinks up the falls for you and set up a grill all ready to cook the chicken they sold you. We usually hit the market and buy fresh crabs which they cook and pack up for us for about a dollar.....really cool. Lastly, snorkeling can be good if the winds are calm only. We did not do it this time as the winds were strong but we did the last visit.
