Located just outside Kilmartin, if you have children keep an eye on them if you intend to go to the top for the great views.

This is a very interesting castle ruin to wander around and climb in. It's formidable situation requires some uphill wallking, but also provides excellent views once there.

It helped that I had the place to myself. The bus stops there but no one else seemed to know. Enough of the ruins remain to allow great exploring. I climbed both towers, taking pictures inside and out of the views. It did not hurt the romance to have sheep grazing at the base. A few useful signs - it dates from 1567 (+ or -). Even if you don't like castles, this is a great experience.

Make the effort to walk up the hill to this excellent castle. There is no over serviced visitor centre or gift shop or officious guides - just an opportunity to wander at will through a well preserved castle with spectacular views. Head up the spiral staircases to the very top and take in the views and spot standing stones and cairns all around. The information provided about the history and day to day life of the castle is concise and well written. A fascinating place.

Get your hiking boots on for a trip to the ruined castle. No entrance fee, no visitors centre, just a very fine ruined castle to explore. It probably won't be a long visit as there's not a great deal to see but I enjoyed it very much and it would make an ideal picnic spot, weather permitting. I would combine it with a trip to Kilmartin museum and church.
