We chose the Cairnbaan Hotel firstly for its location. The area is fantastic for tourism, cycling, eating and especially for the 5000year old relics. From the moment we walked into the hotel we were greeted with such warmth that continued for our 2 night stay. The rooms were a good size, very clean and I think very good value including a delicious breakfast. The menu is diverse and inspired, the seafood being the star for us and all the staff are so friendly. The Cairnbaan Hotel is good value, honest and warm.

There are two reasons why you might want to consider staying at this small hotel: first of all the location is terrific - right on the Crinan Canal. We stayed for two nights on a dinner bed and breakfast package, and enjoyed watching small boats negotiating the lock which is immediately outside the hotel. From the hotel, there are two easy walks along the tow-path: the first to Ardrishaig, is around eight miles return, and the second, and most beautiful, to Crinan, is around 9 miles return.
The second reason is the food.We ate lunch and dinner twice, and I have to say that the food was good on each occasion. The sea-food was fresh and well-prepared, and their caramelised onion and cider soup was outstanding. However, and I realise that this may sound like a strange complaint to make, the portion sizes were way too big! We were a party of four and not one of us managed to sample three courses at dinner, a pity since a couple of the desserts sounded lovely. If you have a normal to small appetite, you might try asking for a half portion. Service was pleasant, friendly and efficient at all times.
However, the hotel is let down somewhat by the standard of the decoration throughout - it could do with a complete refurb, especially in the bedrooms. Our bedroom was large and the sheets and the toilet clean, but both the carpet in the bedroom and the lino in the ensuite were well past their best. There is a small, but cosy residents' lounge, which is teetering on the edge of being shabby, rather than chic. However, we got a very good inclusive deal, which taking into account the food and service, represented good value.

Room Tip: The best rooms are on the first floor facing the front, since hey have a great view of the canal.

We stayed one night on our bike tour of the western isles. Staff very attentive and accommodating. Room lovely. Food was OK. I particularly liked the old-fashioned feel of the place. I would definitely go back.

Stayed one night and thoroughly enjoyed he location, food and the drinks. Dinner was really good and so too was breakfast. Fantastic views into one of the locks and a great position for you to wander up and down the canal. If you are feeling adventurous then walk all the way to Crinnan. Beautiful scenery and excellent for unwinding.
Our room could have done with a good go around again with the Hoover but all in all the room was warm and the bathroom and bed clothes were clean. Will definitely go back and would recommend.

Room Tip: The room 12 where we we're is at the back of the hotel so no view at all but when the canal is t...

Lunch break at the above. Indolent service. Sticky tables. Floor needing cleaned. Foul toilet. Remoteness must save it from being closed down by health and safety. Lochgilphead is not so far away. Fine ciabatta, though the bacon and Brie was ham and Camembert?

Cairnbaan Hotel does a tasty and rich and aromatic chicken madras curry served with popadoms and spicy onions... been many times, had the curry many times. It's consistently good, great portion size and very authentic.

Love it we do - great with a cold beer!

Haven't been a staying guest but food is lovely

I stayed on business for two nights, 19 and 20 May 2014.

I found the service superb in every way. The locality has beautiful scenery, staff were helpful and friendly, rooms were comfortable and the food was brilliant.

When I said I followed a vegan diet, I was shortly given a personalised menu with choices for breakfast/dinner each day. The chef bought in ingredients specially for me, and cooked vegan alternatives where a vegan version could not be located. All at short notice. Knockout.

Room Tip: Wi fi said to be available throughout, although ask to confirm. Worked in room 10 where I was.
