Wilderness Safaris Savuti Camp
Reviewed April 24, 2014

The camp is luxurious, and most importantly, the guides are amazing. They make the experience completely worthwhile.

At Savuti you can easily see many animals, including Giraffe, Lions, Hippos, Leopards and Elefants. Don't expect Rhinos or Zebras. Buffalos depend on the season. Worth the trip.

Dear sergiofo,

Thank you for your enlightening review.

Activities available at Savuti include day and night game drives, as well as boat trips on the Savute Channel (water levels permitting). Walking is also an option, but must be prearranged with your guide or camp manager, as not all guides are qualified for walking in Botswana. There are also a number of hides from which to view and photograph wildlife. Catch-and-release fishing is a seasonal activity
and available on request.

Thank you again

Arrived in a light aircraft to torrential rain! We were received by our guide, Willy, given waterproof capes and driven to the camp. We checked in with lovely management, although the reception room was teeming with water...for some reason, given a "family tent", so we couldn't see the elephants crossing river towards the camp. Good game drive, dinners with other guests interesting, The arrival/indemnity chat was obviously not as good as previous - we arrived at 05:30, shining our torches BY OURSELVES!!! had a little telling off, but then went on game drive.
Room was lovely, very clean, as was the bathroom.

Wonderful place to stay in Okavango.

Dear quijano,

Thank you for your fascinating review, we are sorry to hear that that the reception area was under water when you arrived. This is highly unusual and we will investigate and remedy this immediately.

The Linyanti experiences tremendous seasonal transitions: in summer brilliantly green and lush, while in winter it becomes a barren, dry and harsh interior away from the river. In the dry winter months, large herds of elephant and zebra stay close to the river before moving south to the Savute Channel once the summer rains begin. In addition, a large diversity of general wildlife abounds, including the rare roan and sable antelope, followed naturally by predators such as lion, cheetah, leopard, hyaena and wild dog. The Linyanti River and the Savute Channel attract many species of wildlife, particularly in the winter months when this is the only water available. Elephants are especially abundant at this time. Large pods of hippo are found all along the Linyanti River, often basking in the sun during the cooler winter months. Bird life in the Linyanti is also extensive and diverse due to the different habitats inland and along the river course.

Thank you again

Savuti was the first of our safari stops in Botswana in March 2014. When our Wilderness Safaris flight was landing, it had to circle a couple times because there was an elephant on the runway! We saw several elephants right off the flight! Other things we saw there were: a leopard, two female lions and three cubs feeding on a warthog, hippos, hippos fighting in front of the lodge, lots of zebra, impala, elephant, buffalo, many different beautiful birds... so much I can't really list it all! We didn't see any giraffe, male lions or rhino there this time. We were there for three days, two nights. Really enjoyed the staff, the people we met there, the flights between camps with Wilderness Safaris were excellent, the food was delicious! Our guide was Onx. He was a bit quiet, but very nice, and really good at spotting animals!

Room Tip: I believe all the rooms are the same.

Dear hengbrock,

Thank you for your charming review, unfortunately the wildlife can sometimes cause difficulty on the runway however we have precautions in place to avoid such matters and hopefully this was not too much of an inconvenience to your journey.

Savuti Camp is situated in the 125 000-hectare private Linyanti Concession that borders the Chobe National Park’s western boundary. Areas outside of National Parks are controlled by The department of Wildlife and National Parks and the Tawana Landboard. These bodies have divided up the wildlife areas into large “concessions” of land, which are leased to different companies for periods of up to 15 years. The Linyanti Concession is very large, but despite its size, the tourism policy of Botswana has limited the number of guests we can have in the area at any one time. It is thus an enormous, wildlife-rich area, shared between just three small camps (Savuti, DumaTau and Kings Pool), and enjoys an unrivalled atmosphere of remoteness and space.

Thank you again

We stayed at Savuti for 2 nights after the area had experienced massive rainfalls (and continued to). Our campsite was exceptional and we awoke to watch elephant, giraffe nd buffalo passing by. The high grass and thick foliage after the rain made it somewhat difficult to see animals so after a great conversation with a manager- we learned to head to the pans.

Dear Reschndler,

Thank you for your awesome review.

March has been an interesting month regarding rainfall and we have had some spectacular thunderstorms, mostly at night. We received 70 mm of rain for the month. The temperature has been fairly cool at 19° Celsius minimum and 21° maximum. In the early hours of the morning we can feel the onset of winter approaching. The sunsets have been magical and when we see the sun set over the Savute Channel we truly realise we are in paradise. Our guides have been working very hard and have had some great results for guests, from sightings of wild dog and lion to hyaena and elephant – as well as general game from impala, kudu and hippo to giraffe and zebra. We have found a new pride of lion in the area that is very cautious of us at the moment, but hopefully all the members will get used to us very soon.

Thank you again

Wow - Savuti was our 2nd camp, spent two nights there December, 2013. Location on Savuti Channel is special, and although we were in summer season and the elephants weren't in town, we had a wonderful time here. The rooms are spacious and well appointed, the food is phenomenal. Our guide was Lucky, he was fantastic and the management staff of Connie, Kang (great job new guy!) and Attie made sure our every need was met. Game harder to spot due to lush summer conditions, but we did get great viewing of lion, a Wild Dog pack of 18, fighting giraffe and hippo teenagers (awesome spectacle!) - special thanks to Lucky for the extra early drive to see the leopard tree kill...while we didn't get our cat, the Spotted Hyena trying to climb to get the leftovers was amazing! Amazing place in Botswana, hope to get a return visit some time! Thanks to all, the Reeds

Savuti proved to be a perfect way to begin a magical Botswana safari... the staff was wonderful, the entire atmosphere of the camp felt like family. Connie is fantastic; Goodman is an incredible guide; Rose, Tsedie, Kelly 1, Kelly 2... you all have a special place in my heart. Thank you so much for an amazing trip. I love Botswana. I love Savuti.

We stayed at three WS camps in Botswana, Savuti ties with Chitabe Lediba for the camp facilities and rooms, but Goodman, our Savuti guide, made Savuti the best experience in Botswana.

PROS-

Very nice comfortable luxurious rooms overlooking the flooded Savuti Channel.
Great Wild Dog sightings!
Solid Big Five sightings- best we had in Botswana
Excellent Guide Goodman
Excellent staff, enjoyed Brazil at the bar and manager Connie
Independence day celebration was special, our most memorable meal in Africa
Enjoyed plunge pool while watching elephants plunging in the channel

CON
Felt Connie could have used stronger support from the other two managers.

Arrived at Chobe on Wilderness Air, a wonderful flight from Maun to Tubu Tree then to Chobe allowed us to see much of the Okavango from the air. Met by our guide Goodman, immediately impressed by his serious approach to guiding, explaining the “rules”, objectives and techniques before setting out each day. On the way from the airport, spotted a herd of Roan antelope, our first and only sighting in Botswana.

Orientation of common areas and room was nice, the main are of the camp has a more classic lodge feel than the tented camps- not that it’s better, just different.

Our first afternoon/evening safari started out with just the two us and Goodman . He asked what we wanted to see, as usual, we said “everything, but would really like to see African Wild Dogs. He said the dogs had been moving around but maybe will get lucky. After passing a few Zebras and impalas, I ask to stop so we could get a better view of a fish eagle. When we stopped, something moved just on the other side of the vehicle- two wild dogs! We followed, soon finding the pack of 9 adults and 9 four-month-old pups. We observed them for a while but had to depart to rendezvous with a just arrived British couple. We were slightly annoyed, but when climbing in the Land Rover, they said the number one thing they wanted to see were wild dogs! Soon Goodman found them, we spent the rest of the evening with the wild dogs, choosing to give up our sundowner drinks to stay with the dogs. On the way back to camp, enjoyed a close up leopard sighting.

Day two morning safari started out with 4 out of the big five, many birds, and again the wild dogs. Goodman started to display a lighter side, expressing his determination for us to see the wild dogs successfully hunt.

The afternoon/evening safari we saw the wild dogs kill! Then headed back for a fantastic Botswana Independence Day dinner in the boma. Singing and dancing were interspersed, including some great dancing by Goodman!

Savuti was a great experience for us! No less than 3 nights!

Dear Seattleflyer50, thank you for your great review on our beautiful Savuti Camp.

We are so glad to hear about your fantastic Wild Dog encounters with Goodman. he is a great Guide and we are sure he will be thrilled to hear your kind words.

As for the management issue, we are in the process of testing a new system where a manager hosts guests for the entire stay - averaging 3 days - for consistency. we have had numerous concerns from guests that they were seeing too many different managers during their stay. However this does not mean that other managers should distance themselves from hosting and we will revisit this initiative to ensure that there is adequate presence and that the managers are not taking it for granted. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and we will investigate this in its entirety.

Thank you again for your great feedback and for celebrating our Independence day celebrations with us.
The Savuti Team.
