Ayii Anargyri Natural Healing Spa

We are just back from a weekend to Ayii Anargyri hotel with mixed feelings.

The location is perfect, the hotel per se is very charming and the smell from the fresh herbs in the garden is amazing.

However i think that this is not the hotel to go to with a group of friends as we did. This is an ideal hotel for relaxation and tranquility. If you are interested in a weekend away for some fun with a group of friends, this is not the hotel for you. You will be shushed repeatedly, If you are interested for a weekend away with your significant other or even solo then this would be ideal.

The actual hotel and spa buildings are very charming, stone and wood, traditional features very easy on the eye. The rooms were beautiful, especially the bathrooms. However, this is probably the first hotel i have visited with no mini bar or fridge. No coffee making facilities in the room either.

Breakfast was rather limited compared to other hotels of this caliber but nevertheless tasty. Service was good and staff were very friendly.

The spa treatments were good but the indoor pool was freezing.

We visited in February 2013 following Valentine's weekend. We booked our own taxi from the airport and it was a 40 min journey. The reception staff all speak English and were very approachable and helpful. The room was spacious and had a balcony which overlooked the front of the hotel. The bed & pillows were very comfortable. The restaurant provided fantastic breakfast and evening meals. However, the evening meals were expensive but beautifully presented. It was a treat to dine-in. The restaurant staff were very respectful and appeared very quiet but once we engaged them in our conversations they provided great knowledge of the area and Cyprus. They were genuine in their concern for customers.
On day two, we discovered The Taverna which is 10 - 15 min walk up the hill, if you can manage the steep climb. Although the menu was limited the food was excellent and really good value for money.
The location of the hotel is quite isolated, so I would recommend hiring a car as soon as you arrive in Cyprus, although we managed to find the bus route and timetable after a lot of research. It is situated between Polis and Paphos. (In the main towns most shops and services were still carrying out repairs and getting ready for the April tourist season, therefore not open for business in February.)
The Spa is in the annexe to the hotel so be prepared to walk out of the hotel complex suitably dressed. Access to the sulphur pool and sauna was included in our hotel stay. The pool was not one that you could swim in but more suitable for a soak or float. They provided clean towels, robes & slippers each time you visited. The best find was the sun-lounge which was completely serene. After a soak and sauna we spent hours relaxing and reading on the loungers in the sun which is just what we needed to recuperate. There a good walks in the area if you enjoying mountain walking and your knees can cope with the pressure.
When visiting again we would hire a car and maybe only stay for a long weekend.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the poolside are drier. There was a little damp in the room facing the car park.

This is my third visit to AA and I highly recommend it.

The hotel setting is very picturesque among the citrus groves in the valley near Miliou village and the stone buildings of the hotel with the small old AA chapel give it a unique character.

Upon arrival you are greeted with a fresh citrus drink and a hot towel which I think is a nice touch.

Our preferred time of year is March and April when the countryside is at its best and the fields are green with many wild flowers. This is not a seaside hotel, but we use it as our base for walks in the Akamas Nature Reserve and for trekking in the Stavros tis Psokas forest. There is nothing more soothing than a long soak in the spa pools (which is free for just soaking in the natural salt rich pools but can get quite costly if you opt for one of the many specific spa treatments) after a long walk. The gym and sauna are also free of charge in the spa resort building which is located 100 metres from the main building.

Breakfast is very good, and although variety is not grand, there are fresh products from the hotel-owned groves of the area like orange juice, jams, dips, olives, etc. You can order complementary hot dishes (my favourite is scrambled eggs on toast with salmon).

I would also recommend you book a special dinner at the Cava gourmet restaurant which is the converted old monastery cellar, with old thick wooden tables and wine bottles lining the walls. Food is excellent and the wine choice is very extensive.

There are many types of rooms and prices. Some have natural sulphur water piped in for a private spa treatment and a few have an outside hot tab / jacuzzi so you can soak in those mineral salts with the valley groves as background scenery. The standard room I booked was basic but the size was acceptable. Bed mattress was excellent for a good night sleep.

Although there is a main hotel building with lobby, most rooms are not in the main building.

There is an age restriction, (guests 14+ only allowed) which in our case is positive since the place is quiet and kid-free.

A few quibbles:
Wifi is only available in the hotel lobby.

Apart from 5 local TV channels in greek, there were only 2 other channels available, both in german.

Mobile phone reception is weak and intermittent (but that is hardly the hotel’s fault)

I consider the bar drinks on the expensive side (half a litre of tinned Guiness, and a shot of single malt scotch cost 12,50€)

Apart for the lobby the hotel bar, with its big fireplace, is the only common area where guests can mingle in the cool months of year which can tend to be a bit repetitive after a few nights.
The hotel is situated in the middle of nowhere which can be good for some or bad for others. For a change of scenery try the Pangratios tavern less than a km away, in Miliou village up the road from the hotel.

We stayed for just one night at the resort and we are already planning to stay there for more. The premises are beautiful, making a very good combination of the old traditional stone that can be found in the area, with dark wood. The interior is also great and the staff is very polite and friendly. The room (standard room) was comfortable and clean. We had our afternoon coffee along with very nice cakes at the cafe-restaurant which is an extension of the breakfast/dining room, Amarulla. We also had a wonderful dinner at the small dining area which is beautifully decorated as a cava, with only 6 big tables made of solid wood, giving a note of old and medieval. The food was great and very well served. The breakfast was also very good and you can chose from a variety of cold dishes and order some hot as well (sausages, mushrooms, halloumi, omelettes etc). The only dawback that I can think of, is in the room. There are no many TV channels and some coffee/tea making facilities would be great, as you could enjoy your coffee/tea at the balcony, watching the surrounding nature.

We went there in September 2012. The setting is beautiful, the food is great, the people are incredibly helpful and friendly and the room was nice, the hotel itself was great, the spa (sulphur bath in particular) was fabulous. My partner had a "tooth" problem while there. Staff sorted everything for him, phoned around about who could see him at short notice, arranged the appointment etc etc.
I recommend this place to anyone who needs a quiet and peaceful break and we'd definitely go back.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to a dream – a dream that unfolded in 1983. We cordially invite you to steep yourself within a vision that will bring relaxation, health, well-being and no little luxury. In the spring of 2009 Ayii Anargyri Spa resort opened its doors and present the world with a sublime experience. Set in a valley of mature trees, the resort offers a unique retreat, a place of profound calm and the opportunity to enjoy the health-giving waters which have benefited visitors for so many years. This boutique hotel with accommodation for 150 guests in Suites or Classic rooms, has dedicated spa facilities in the grounds, a generous swimming pool and conference facilities for 50 people. Cuisine from locally grown produce will reveal all that is best in traditional Cypriot fare – food that is garden fresh, nutritious, flavorsome. The hotel provides the means to benefit from the time-tested remedies of the mineral rich waters which flow here – but there is so much more. An abundance of scenic attractions will delight any nature lover. Also outdoor pursuits like cycling, walking and bird watching are just a few other possibilities to make your stay a tonic for body and mind. History of healing: The Spa was first formally opened in 1649 by two brothers, Cosmas and Damianos. Their generosity in offering treatment often without thought of reward gave rise to the name Anargyri – without silver. They became known and loved locally for their selfless acts and affectionately known as saints. In the 19th century the waters were properly analyzed and did indeed contain health-giving minerals. Now the new luxury spa will offer a variety of treatment rooms and therapies many involving the sulphur water which rises naturally nearby in this tranquil setting. Ayii Anargyri has something unique. From the Cyprus hillside, a mineral-rich spring carries the soothing waters renowned for generations for their healing qualities. This remarkable stream has been channeled to the new spa where it is combined in numerous treatments now advanced by modern science. The waters are beneficial for joint or muscle discomfort and some circulatory problems. The therapies are natural and non invasive. ... more   less
