Owner description: You might hear this garden before you see it; its delightfully eccentric owner,Anthony Hunte BCH, plays classical music throughtout the garden. this is the working end of old Castle Grant plantation, where sugar cane was once processed into syrup. Step through the gate and you'll soon tread on the old weigh bridge, where loads of cane were tallied. Just past the old stone outbuildings, where statues lurk among exotic plants, you'll find yourself on the lip of a great, hemispherical sinkhole in the limestone substrate. Steps lead down and paths branch out through an exquisite profusion of flowering plants, with towering trees around the edges. Both here and farther along the top are a series of small secret gardens, where you can sit to absorb the serenity and enjoy a picnic. Be sure to climb the upper level steps to Mr. Hunte's house, a transformation of the old stables. He'll invite you for refreshments-including his legendary rum punch or freshly made lemonade (for sale)-on his glorious, antique studded verandah overlooking the garden. If you're lucky, he'll tell you tales, and you will surely leave with some of your own. If you're driving, follow the red and white signs that read Hunte's Gardens, from all over the island. Or, come by taxi. If you take the local bus from the Fairchild Street Bus Stand in Bridgetown it's #5 Sugar Hill Bus - Bds$2 each way.

“Individual, eccentric and all the better for being so!”

One of my reasons for visiting the East coast was to see Hunte's Gardens, and I am so glad I made this trip. This isn't a garden that has been designed by a committee, but one man's personal labour of love.
There were an astonishing array of plants and tree's, including both a pink and a black pineapple, both in bloom at the time of my visit. Garden paths with seating ( and attending statues!) were positioned to provide different perspectives, and a welcome rest! Anthony Hunte was a very aimiable and knowledgable host, and obviously enjoys the company of his guests... and the rum punches were pretty good too! Definately a place to sit, chat, wander, stare, listen to the music and enjoy. If you visit.. take the time to let this place work it's magic on you.

“Beautiful place!”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

This place alone makes a short stop in Barbados worthwhile. It is exactly as Anthony Hunte says, absolutely enchanting. The scale is awe-inspiring and the amount of labour that must go into it is mind-bogling. It's a must-see!

“An enchanting place to propose”
Reviewed May 6, 2013

I believe this would be a wonderful place to propose. A beautiful, quiet garden, well tended, with several places to sit and look at the flowers. This is not a place to go for a jog as you would have completed the exercise in 5 minutes, but if you are looking for a place to sit, daydream, chat, relax or have an important discussion, this would fit the bill. Background classical music adds another dimension to the experience. We spent an afternoon watching the birds and the flowers, letting time go by. We felt energized as we walked out a few hours later.

Never expected to be so blown away, thought there would be fabulous vegetation but the dimension was unreal. Anthony Hunte worked magic on this property and it is impossible to be disappointed by this heaven on earth.
