Can we start by saying that this is a GREAT property and we had an amazing weeks holiday mid May 2011. Key plus points to note:

-Fantastic staff (Deidriana on the front desk was vibrant, cheeky and very helpful- what you need from reception. Francine -the catering manager went out of her way to make you smile and made sure there was sufficient vegetarian food on the menu each evening for my wife and Keith the egg chef has been with the property 21 years and through 5 owners. He is a hugely charismatic and just told great stories. In addition he makes a fabulous eggs benedict that would rival any NY hotel.

- Superb location - for sunsets, beaches and swimming with turtles

- Dedon garden furniture on the patios / beach / pool side plus miller harris toiletries in the rooms gave it a luxurious feel and substantiated the five stars

-Amazing ocean front rooms that allow you to sit in bed and see the sunset, hear the ocean at night and have a romantic private dinner on your balcony.

- Housekeeping that worked to our schedule. I have read reports on trip adviser that they were very slow and didn't do rooms till later in the day but we found that a simple chat in the morning allowed them to plan the day ahead around our itinerary.

-Complimentary afternoon tea. It was just a wonderfully civilised way to break up the day's relaxation /swimming and was a welcome late afternoon snack.

BUT.......

........not all rooms are beach facing. There are 3 rooms in the villa that sit near the tennis courts.

....... not all rooms are what we believe to be of 5 star standard. We arrived and were shown the villa room which are based on the old Pavillion style of decor- please see the hotel website. One of the rooms in the villa needs a lot of work (happy to share photos): poor paintwork, curtains that do not fit the window appropriately and the need for a transformer for international adapters to work which looked like something out of the fifties.

We raised our concerns with the general manager, who was very professional and moved us to the main hotel into an ocean facing room -which is truely a five star room. We were lucky one was available.

We were advised that the villa was an entry level room, and it was what my travel agent had booked without advising me. Notwithstanding this, the difference in room standard was just shocking to us and not what one would expect from the Fairmont brand.

If you are looking to stay at this property make sure you know what you are booking and if you can afford it pay for the ocean front room -We would definitely recommend it. I was lucky that they had a room vacant for us to upgrade,, but also the general manager was prepared to listen to our concerns.

Conclusion:

In the end this was just an amazing holiday, and we will stay at this hotel several times over, but i will ensure i am in an ocean fronted room.

The general manager also advised us that he would look into the villa room that we stayed in, so please note that this post may not reflect any proposed changes.

I hope this helps.

Hello Vivre - World Traveller;

Thank you for your kind comments... I will pass your Kudos on to Dedriana, Francine, and of course our breakfast chef Keith! Addtionally I am pleased you thought highly of our services, offerings, and of our newly renovated Suites and Ocean View rooms. We have done a lot to renovate and upgrade The Fairmont Royal Pavilion in the last year both physically and with our service standards, we really appreciate your review!

We sincerely try to convey our 3 Villa rooms accurately and will remind all our agents these rooms differ from our Suite and Ocean View rooms in location, decor, and level of renovation. Since your visit we have taken new photos which will be added to our website and additionally, we are updating our web description information accordingly.

This said we could have done a better job in making sure the curtains, transformer, and other room items were in better condition for your visit. These items have since been addressed. We do have plans to further upgrade this Villa, and will keep you posted on our website for confirmation of this.

I am pleased that when you felt there was an issue, you let us know and we addressed it to your satisfaction. We will stay on the matter so it is not repeated!

Thanks for the fair comments;

My wife and I spent our 20th anniversary at the Royal Pavilion and had a fantastic time. Perfect weather for walking right out of our room, on to the beach. They offer a two-person cat to take out on your own...do it! If your looking for a place to relax...this is it.
Rent a car and travel the island...you might get lost (like we did) but it was a highlight of our trip. There a lots of restaurants close by but you may just want to stay on the property.
This is where will stay when we return next time!!

Room Tip: Junior Suite / Beach access

We arrived at the Fairmont Royal Pavilion on Sun, May 1st and as of this writing, we're still here! Unfortunately departing May 6th. This was our first trip to Barbados and we chose the Royal Pavilion because...well...it's a Fairmont. We're in a Beachfront Junior Suite; very comfortable, spacious and lovely room with a private terrace overlooking the beach. 2 chaise lounges & tables/chairs less than 20 steps to the ocean. Definitely book one of these suites -- it's worth it.

The people here are genuinely wonderful. Very friendly and pay attention to detail. The only issue I have is service at the restaurants...very slow...had to ask for a cocktail everytime I wanted one instead of the wait staff asking when the glass was empty. Similar issue with getting the check. Not sure if this is an "island" thing or just the waitstaff here. (we are frequent travelers to Bermuda Fairmont Southampton and never experienced this wait).

Barbados has had many, many days of rain and that has dampened our beach time somewhat. Today we gave up and just went in the ocean during the rain -- heavenly!

Special thanks to Paulina (concierge) as well as Peter/Dawn (Personal Concierge who come with the Suite) -- they have been very kind and most helpful.

Since this is our first trip to Barbados; I can't compare this facility to others on the island but I can say this. It's small enough to feel intimate...doubtful this would ever turn into a "convention" hotel...but large enough for privacy if you seek it.

Not alot of shopping on site though. Very small store selling basic sundries, 1 ladies upscale clothing store (offering only small small sizes) and 1 gents clothing store. Also a small jewelry store with basic inventory.

If you are arranging transportation, have the hotel handle for you -- and ask for Joan. Wonderful lady; very comfortable BMW.

We"ll definitely be back as soon as we can!

Room Tip: ask for the beachfront junior suites

Our second visit to this wonderful hotel.Fantastic rooms, food and surroundings-lovely beach and gardens.Afternoon tea still a nice touch Would go back in an instant!
One little gripe-room cleaning was sometimes late(after 3.30) which meant us having to hang around before we could get back into the room to rest or shower.

Room Tip: walk to holetown along the beach at low tide

As the title suggests very memorable and nice. Went with the Brother in July 2008. Made some friends there who I still keep in contact with to this very day.

The hotel was pretty damn awesome. The manager there ANDRE (not sure if still working) was literally so damn funny and provides excellent chat when he is out on the pi** with us! The food/bar was pretty good only had food there once though. Not as extravagant as the Sandy Lane but has had its fair share of celebs there (Lineker, Wayne Rooney as a 18 year old) etc.

Provide free computers with internet access, gym was ok from what I heard, rooms were pretty sharp (nice balcony, big bed, good bathroom) and right on the beach.

Pool not the biggest but I spent most the time on the beach anyway. They have very good afternoon tea here.

Went along the beach and saw a few other sights there were some proper local bars/eateries which were very interesting and good cultural experience. Lots of older white British/American women after some young muscly Caribbean studs which was pretty funny to watch since they were definitely shooting above their league.

Beach much better than those I have been to in Asia if you are mad keen on beaches this is good. Plus not absolutely heafing it is quite relaxed which is good. Other people at the hotel are pretty friendly most times on holiday I barely speak to anyone else.

Barbados definitely worth going to check out one time in your life, better than Bahamas which is full of loud Americans from what I've heard. Barbados still retains a lot of its commonwealth past. Went driving around the island on a small buggy which was fun and saw a few sights.

Just had our fourth different charge for same breakfast!!There is a full buffet with a very poor hot section for this class of hotel. Then there are a myriad of different options most of which don't explain all the components. For cereal with fruit on we have had four different charges so far-from $62(+10%)the expensive full buffet charge, downwards.I did point this out and they were very remorseful but it continues to happen.Obviously an important profit centre for them as issue of the bill to sign is usually preceded with an inquisition.Pity because otherwise the place is great

Hello Trip Advisor reviewer Chappelow!

Thanks for the great feedback! I am happy to report we have been focusing on this area which has improved since your visit. We have met with our supervisors on the matter and are retraining our team. Our new Chef has begun improving the breakfast buffet, we are reducing / streamlining pricing, and I am also pleased to announce we have an outstanding Food & Beverage Director who I am confident will take us to the next level.
