“Eternity Villa at Glitter Bay, St James, Barbados”
Reviewed April 26, 2008

Eternity is one of the rental apartments on the Glitter Bay resort, in Barbados. It is the corner unit on the second floor, overlooking the beach, with two large patio doors that create a sense of being outside, even when in!. We booked through Bajan Services, who took good care of the arrangments and who responded speedily to any questions or queries before and during our stay in April 2008. Glitter Bay is having some refurbishment work done between May and November, so will re-open in time for the new season. The apartment is very comfortable and is only steps from a lovely beach, good for swimming. We stayed for 11 days and hired a car for a week, again through Bajan Services and are glad we did. The island is very different on each side and top and bottom! There are a few restaurants within walking distance, but a car or taxi is needed to get easily into Holetown. We ate at Tides, Angry Annies and Royal Pavillion... all served good food, although the prices ranged from very reasonable, to fairly expensive. Tides and Royal Pavillion had great service and great food, which was reflected in the price. Barbados is an interesting and relaxed island and worth a visit. Weather was good and we were glad of the clouds and sea breeze which provided comfort to the 80 degree temperatures.

  • Liked — comfort of the villa and proximity to the beach

We were there as students just after the intervention--in Grenada. My husband was an off shore medical student at the time. We had lived on Grenada & because of the intervention were offered Miami or Barbados for the next semester--or more--we didn't know. Who would take Miami? Alot of students did. A small 50 families/students were adventurous enough to give Barbados a try. We became very close as an extended family. Even the class president & her family chose what I will always consider one of the smartest moves we ever made. We had two small girls at the time, & were located in a fairly large community between Sandy Lane & Glitter Bay---but on the other side of the road in St. James Parrish. We had a small villa & the girls went to school in town. We loved it. We were lucky enough to have my husband's family (a doctor also) paying our way so we could stay together. They put three successful boys through the med school on Grenada. We traveled around on Saturdays & often had lunch at Glitter Bay. We would then let the kids sneak into the lovely pool. That is how we began getting thrown out of the most beautiful hotel we had ever experienced. We had already traveled alot with my husband's family & on our own so we had alot of comparisons to go by. I vowed that we would come back as paying customers to repay the slowness with which we were kicked out on more than several occassions. After all- Glitter Bay had housed guests of the Queen of England who traveled with her while she stayed on her yauht. We really wanted to live that experience. My husband & I came back several times for 10 day stretches. We had beautiful accomadations. I had a massage everyday. We rented a car & went horse riding at least several times each trip. (You have to rent a car. The island considers travelers their greatest financial endeavor. They watched for us & when we ended up on the wrong side of the road they stopped & kindly motioned for us to get turned around. They also will patiently give directions). Horseback riding past the brewery when it is letting off steam & the ocean tide is spewing makes for great excitement on horseback! My husband's mare spooked. She was a sweetheart--she just dumped him really quite gently on the beach. We traded horses. There is a wonderful man between town & Sandy Lane who will take you for rides. He won alot I could remember his name. You will see a sign just before the round-a-bout going into town on the right. His horses are the sweetest on the island. We even found someone to take us into the forrest riding one day, but the beach makes for a ride you will never forget. Glitter Bay also provided wonderfully romantic picnic baskets that we took in our rental car to the other side of the island. We found a beautiful beach coast with no one there but ourselves. We swam & dined on a formal meal with everything included. I just asked for the basket & left it up to them--it was wonderful. Be careful--some coastal areas are not for new swimmers. The signs are posted to warn you though. Glitter bay offers honeymooners their own romantic castle like villa. They even have a private beach to enjoy. There is so much more to this island to love. It is not inexpensive, but worth every penny you save. We enjoyed a renting a large house from Sandy Lane on one visit; bringing our larger family & several other families to celebrate the completion of medical school & residencies. Watch for my reccomendation for Sandy Lane at a later date. There is also a Marriot close to the airport with 3 pools & FANTASTIC Sunday brunches. The American manager at the time went to school with our oldest daughter. He kindly extended an open invitation to our family to come enjoy the resort at anytime. We did & we also came back as paying quests several times to thank him. Please also watch for that recommendation in the near future. All three of these resorts are gorgeous. Each was better for different reasons & travel groups. Of all my trips all over this world though Glitter Bay won my heart. Make your own memories. And experience a resort that is there to help you make lasting memories with an island people that are the kindest anywhere. I promise that I DO NOT work for a travel agency, any resort, or the island of Barbados. I also don't type so please excuse my clumsy endeavor!

We visited Ocean Blue (an apartment in Glitter Bay) during October half term. The former hotel is now all privately owned apartments. About the apartment what can I say? – having viewed photographs of Ocean Blue on the internet my expectations of the apartment were high – I wasn’t disappointed! Ocean Blue more than exceeded all my expectations and is simply stunning. It is everything you could wish for in an apartment - spacious, modern, tasteful, bright – yet it is also very comfortable and practical with some thoughtful extra touches such as boogie boards for the sea and a picnic hamper for days out at the beach. The décor and furnishings of the apartment are fabulous and a credit to the owner’s good taste.

Ocean Blue is in a great location, ideally placed for the beautiful west coast beaches (the nearest beach to the apartment being about 30 seconds walk away!) and the facilities of Holetown. Waking up to the view of the beach from the huge balcony each morning felt like I was in paradise. The grounds and pool of Glitter Bay are also great, particularly if you are staying there with children. It is a very peaceful, relaxing setting but also convenient for the many world class restaurants on the west coast such as The Cliff and Tides.

I would not hesitate in recommending Ocean Blue for either a relaxing romantic getaway or a luxury family holiday. Either way Barbados has got a lot to offer and Ocean Blue is the perfect base from which to explore it.

Glitter Bay was closed for refurbishment during 2005. Its now back to its former glory. All of the Fairmont owned units have been totally refurbished and many sold to individual owners. Whilst the property is no longer managed by the Fairmont Group it is possible to book through smaller letting agents (e.g. Barbados Villa Services), and its well worth it.
We stayed at a newly refurbished Unit 411 - which was outstanding. The quality of the decor, furnishings and design are terrific as was the views of the beach - which is Glitter Bays best feature.

We had a wonderful time. The beach is great, the apartment was spectacular and the location is excellent wioth easy access to some of Barbados best restaurants, such as Lone Star, The Fishpot, and Tides.

My wife and I stayed at glittter bay in 1984 on our honeymoon. And returned with our four children in 2004.We had a great time both times. The hotel is very quiet especialy at night so if you are looking for the bar scene this is not the place for you but if you are looking for a great smaller hotel with great food and staff I would recommend Glitter Bay

This hotel is in a lovely spot close to a great beach. We returned in November 2004 bacause we had really enjoyed our holiday the previous year.

However, we had a fairly disasterous time, both my sons aged 9 & 11 contracted ear infections, we believe from the hotel pool, which were so bad that even after 3 trips to the local doctor they were in bed and in agony for the second half of our stay.

The hotel staff were not really interested in our plight and claimed that the pool was tested daily and met the Barbados Government standards and that was that.

I believe the hotel is due to close for refurbishment in 2005 and I would think carefully about visiting prior to its completion, after all there are plenty of other great places to stay in Barbados.

Glitter Bay is a great spot with some fantastic staff, I hope some updating and a bit of TLC return it to its former glory !

We have just returned from our fourth visit to Glitter Bay, our last was six years ago. We love the position and there is a great beach. The one problem there has always been is that, other than families with small children, no-one eats at the hotel at night. The food is excellent but the atmosphere zero. This time no-one even seemed to want to stay at the bar for a drink so the social area was completely dead in the evenings.

We were not notified until 4 days before our departure that there would be building works going on. They said the noise would be limited to the hours of 10-6 but in fact work started around 7.30 a.m. We did manage to ensure we had a room as far away as possible but some people had a dire time with the noise. The hotel became known as "Grotty Bay" by the end of the trip!

We spoke to the manager on the cocktail evening and it transpired that the hotel is closing in May for refurbishment and the staff have been given notice and don't know whether they will be re-employed there. There was a distinct atmosphere among them and a general malaise which was sad as the Bajans are generally such happy and welcoming people.

A hotel perhaps to be avoided until it reopens end of 2005, if the work is completed in time, when it will have returned to an even keel.
