“Hotel Very Nice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2006

We just returned from the Hilton (April 7-14). The hotel was very nice. I would recommend this hotel. The tanks next door are for storage and not a big deal. If you are able, I would get access to the executive lounge (or pay the difference). The lounge provides a very nice breakfast, afternoon snacks, and appetizers (and free drinks at night). The kids club is very nice. They even provide a movie/pizza night on Tuesday night (6-8pm), so the adults can go out to dinner alone. The kids club is complimentary. My only real complaint is that the beds are very hard. I travel a great deal for work and most hotels have upgraded to very comfortable beds. The beds at this hotel are very hard. Additionally, you need to go before breakfast to get an umbrella. By 9:30am, all the umbrellas are gone. The cab drivers were courteous, helpful, and the prices were always consistent. Finally, there is no reason to change money. The Barbados dollar is 2-1 to the American dollar. It is very easy to figure out any conversion. Please also note that all the restaurants include a 10% service charge in the bill as part of the tip. I made the mistake the first day of not noticing this and tipping an additional 20%.

Info -
Cabs cost
-$20 each way from the airport to the hotel (per cab not per person)
- $10 each way to the GAP (restaurants)
- $8-$10 each way to Bridgetown
- $20 each way to the Cliff

Jet Ski - $50 for 1/2 hour from the hotel

Restaurants:
Pisces - Excellent Seafood and a beautiful restaurant - This was my favorite restaurant.

Cliff - This restaurant was very romantic and had an unbelievable view. The service was excellent. The food was good, but very expensive. The seafood at Pisces was better.

SouthSea - Good seafood and service.

Opa - Good view, but only ok food.

Just wanted to say..that the problems we had at the Hilton were addressed by the front manager. He acknowledged that what happened with us should never have taken place. Although it hurt our memories of Barbados and the Hilton chain, the kind reply we recieved made us feel that it won't happen to future guests. We respect the Hilton Barbados manager for looking into our problems and saying he is taking all measures to assure all future guests will not experience the same. We are confident the Hilton will shine in the future with all guests.

Having stayed in Barbados quite a bit, I find that it is centrally located with beautiful Ocean views from all rooms and offers a great guest experience. I would probably never stay in a Hilton in the US, however this resort is more like a high end property. It has one of the few swimming beaches where you can wade out avoiding rocks, courteous staff, and Concierge floor. It is not all inclusive and food is Barbados pricey, but quite good. Best of all, even in season it wasn’t so crowed you had to fight for a beach or pool chair.

If you prefer a 50 minute trip from BGI, frozen/canned food, cheap liquor, erratic room quality, worn out beds, rocky beaches, hokey island entertainment and a tuned out staff, a competitor has 2 Resorts just down the road where all that is included for 1 not so low price.

Just returned from 5 days at the Hilton.
The hotel is very well run, with super-friendly staff in all areas. It is very clean, the rooms are well furnished and the facilities in general are first-class. It is right on its own pristine beach - lots of fine white sand that is cleaned each night. The pool complex is great for adults and families alike. The restaurants are also very good - especially the evening buffets (try to get Breakfast included in your rate - the breakfast buffet is also huge). They have executive floors and an executive lounge for Gold/Diamond Hhonors members, and a huge set of function rooms for events. No hesitation in recommending this for a good quality stay in Barbados.

For shopping, give Bridgetown a miss and head for Holetown - much nicer..

First the Natural Gas facility next door is no big deal. We never smelled anything the 8 days we were there. 90% of the rooms do not face the facility at all. Bay side you have to look out all the way to the right to see them. The property is super clean (opened in 0ctober 2005) the help is very friendly. They are understaffed at the pool and bar area. The resort needs a swimup bar. The beach is ok not great because of the surf coming in and too many rocks in the water. The food is fine also, including the buffet. Dont order hamburgers the island does not eat much beef and they do not know how to cook it correctly, always over done. If the beach was nicer i would give the resort a full 5 star review. The family and i have been all over the carribean and this property is very nice especially for the price they charge per night. Our kids 13,12,2,7months had a great time. The babies loved the shallow baby pool and beach. The island is very pretty once you get out of the main downtown area. We chartered a private 60 foot catamaran to tour the Turtle spots and beaches. We caught a Blue marlin and many wahoo on a private fishing charter also. Restaurants are great if you pick the nicer level ones. The Cliff restaurant was wonderful. Don't go to Opa (greek food). You must try the baracuda at dinner it is one of the best fish you will ever eat as well as the flying fish. If we return we'll do a private home instead but the Hilton is a fool proof choice if you want to be in a hotel. be prepared...it is one long flight from the east coast.

I only stayed at the Hilton one night, before 7 nights at a villa rental and I had no problems with the place. My friend and I were put in an executive room which I was entitled to due to my Gold status and the executive lounge was definitely worth it. Complimentary drinks/snacks in the evening and free breakfast in the morning were great. Our room overlooked the water and the views were wonderful. The pool/beaches were not crowded at all. I would definitely stay here again!

The Hilton Barbados was absolutely perfect!

We spent 6 amazing days at the Hilton Barbados (March 19-24). This is a new hotel (opened Aug '05). There are two towers, the Lighthouse Tower and the Fort(?) Tower. As a Hilton Diamond member, they were kind enough to upgrade us to the Executive level (8th floor) in the Lighthouse Tower.

The Executive lounge was fantastic and it is worth paying for an Executive Level room if you have the chance. Complimentary breakfast was laid out buffet style and it was quite substantial. Evening hor's D'ouvres were very nice and the full open bar was a big plus. We estimated that we saved at least $100 per day by using the complimentary food/drink in the lounge.

Room: Our room was amazing! Due to our top floor location, our ceiling height was about 20' high! There’s nothing nicer than staying in a well designed brand new hotel room and this was a treat (see photos). Great bathroom with tub and separate walk in shower, nice closet with large electronic safe. Good TV with many US and Canadian channels. Excellent air conditioning. Keep in mind that our room probably had upgraded amenities.

Note: In both towers, there is one floor (I think the 7th) that has a solid balcony wall, (as opposed to the see through railing on the other floors). If you are in bed or sitting on the balcony, you won’t be able to see your ocean/beach view unless you are standing. This might seem insignificant to most but I would avoid that particular floor.

Workout area on the 6th floor overlooked the water. Lots of high quality, state-of-the-art equipment that actually smelled new! There is no “spa” but they do offer spa services next to the workout area.

Pool – Fantastic! The main pool is large with a few small waterfalls and just the right temp. There is a smaller infinity edge pool one level up as well as a kiddy pool by the beach. A secluded hot tub is also near the main pool. There were ample lounges and tables around the pool. Pool/beach towel service is complimentary and they give nice big towels.

Beach – Superb! Fine white sand, good size waves, lifeguards on duty. The beach does have some rocky areas (see photos) but we spent hours in the water without any issues. Lots of beach chairs and umbrellas were available. We were there at March break and we did not have trouble finding chairs.

Food – Due to the nice food in the Executive Lounge, we did not eat in the restaurants too much. A cheese burger and Flying fish sandwich at the pool/beach bar were good. Tapas in one of the lobby level restaurants were good. People move at a slower pace here so I wouldn’t crucify them for not being as fast as your local Starbucks.

I’d like to address some of the complaints/reviews that had me worried before my arrival. Yes, there are fuel storage tanks beside the property. It is not a “refinery” as someone erroneously reported. None of the rooms look out at them as far as I could tell but if you bend over and look sideways from your balcony, you could see them. We did not smell any fumes. “Cemetery next door”…there is supposed to be an historic military cemetery near the storage tanks but we did not get a chance to go over and see it.

Restaurant recommendations: The Cliff, superb restaurant about 20 minutes from the hotel. Try to arrive before sunset as the view is beyond belief. We arrived at 6PM for our 6:30 reservation and had a cocktail as the sun was setting. Expensive: ($300 US) for two. Flawless service and food. If you appreciate fine restaurants, this is not to be missed. I made reservations weeks before via e-mail and it was easy.
Brown Sugar: Cute, authentic Barbados food frequented by locals and tourists. Our lunch buffet had all the local dishes featured. Good food, nice “garden” setting about 5 minute walk from the Hilton.

I think I’ve covered everything in this very long review. I would not hesitate recommending this property (and island) to anybody. We will plan on returning.
