Sugar Cane Club Hotel & Spa
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 26, 2010

Travelled to Barbados with Virgin holidays in May for my brother's wedding at the Mango Bay Hotel. Stayed at the Sugar Cane Club with husband and parents and what a fantastic choice. The hotel is set at the top of a hill in a quiet and peaceful area surrounded by trees and lush grounds. Watch out for the monkeys that frequent the grounds first thing in the morning and at early evening.

Although situated at the top of a hill it is only a 10 min walk to the beach and the hill not that steep. Honest!!

The food at the hotel is simply out of this world and the staff really make you feel welcome. In fact, the hotel is small and informal and thanks to Roddy and his amazing team you really feel at home here.

The only really minor issue is the beach that the hotel uses. It's not the best but it depends what you're looking for. I'm a pool person and felt totally relaxed here.

Make sure you book your massage at the spa, it's a wonderful experience and even better when it's a free 30 mins as part of your hotel stay. Very reasonable for additional treatments.

I will definately recommend this hotel to friends and family and hope to visit again one day.

We arrived on the 9th of jan, should have been the 6th but the snow delayed us for 3 days. We booked for 2 weeks at the sugar cane then we were to cruise around the islands for 1 week before returning home, as we were delayed for 3 days they could not move our cruise date so it meant us staying at the hotel for 11 nights then doing our cruise for 1 week then returning back to the sugar cane for 3 more nights.
Before we left for our cruise we decided to get married on our return back to the hotel, we discussed this with the hotel staff and rod the hotel manager who made all the arrangments everything went to plan and we married on the 29th jan they spoilt us completley and gave us everything we needed so much so we intend to return back there every year.
special thanks to our friends at the hotel.

I travelled to the Sugar Cane Club Hotel with my wife for our honeymoon in March/April of 2010. We went with Virgin Holidays and stayed all inclusive. It was an absolute dream staying at this hotel and I would strongly recommend it for couples and honeymooners that are looking for a truly relaxing and tranquil place to stay.

Staff: The first thing that I have to say about this hotel is that the staff were fantastic. The General Manager Roddy has an incredibly friendly and personal approach to guests and holds a cocktail party each Monday evening which is well worth attending. The bar staff (Roy, Hamilton, Ricardo and Sade who worked in the restaurant) are also all very friendly and helpful.

Food: The food really sets this hotel apart from others - my wife who doesn't like to fly would get on a plane purely to eat this food again. Everything we had/saw was of an excellent restaurant quality. The chefs take a lot of pride in what they prepare and on buffet evenings stand with the food to talk you though what they have made. There are 4 A La Carte evenings and 3 buffet evenings which worked really well. The A La Carte evenings were held in the main restaurant and the menu changed every 2 meals so there was plenty of variety. There was always a hot and cold soap, a catch of the day, a steak and generally 3-4 starters and 2-3 mains on top. The buffets were set up around the pool area so that people could eat outside. Fire torches were used for lighting and this made it feel very special.

Grounds: The hotel is set in a garden paradise. The grounds are clearly very well maintained with beautiful flowers, bushes and palm trees all around. A day didn’t go by where a gardener wasn’t tending to something – not that they were intrusive because like all the staff they were extremely friendly and just went about their work.

Rooms: There are 40 suites, all of which appear to be very similar. We stayed in an ocean view room (I think the only difference is that ocean view rooms were all first floor and garden view rooms were all ground floor). The suite was very clean (as was the entire hotel). A couple of hours after arriving we were presented with a bottle of sparkling white wine to celebrate our honeymoon which we thought was a lovely touch. The bedroom was simple but had a decent sized bed with clean sheets and plenty of space for clothes. There was an iron and ironing board, aircon, a well secured safe and good sized mirrors. The bathroom was very good with a good shower in the bath and a full glass cover (we never ran out of hot water no matter the time of day). There were very nice smelling and feeling locally produced soap, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and aftersun available for use in the room. The lounge was quite large with lots of space for people to sit and a flat screen TV up in the corner of the room (around 10 channels with a couple of movie channels, BBC World and ESPN). We didn’t use the kitchen, other than the fridge to keep drinks cool, because we were all inclusive - although it was small it was very well equipped with everything you could possibly need. The room was cleaned daily and towels/sheets were changed every 3 days.

Activities: I would strongly suggest taking the complimentary glass bottom boat trip. We thought it was so good that we didn’t bother booking any other boat trips while we were there. The beach attendant called ‘The General’ takes you out in an old open-sided boat that seats around 12 people and shows you tropical fish as well as a few old shipwrecks. He then takes you to swim with giant turtles. Although we spent about 45 minutes looking for the turtles we came up trumps by getting a family of 5-6 to swim with us. Snorkels are provided and you can swim down and touch their shell’s which is lots of fun.

There is a good squash court and rackets can be borrowed free of charge from reception, as can bats for the table tennis table. The gym is fairly well equipped and nicely air-conditioned.

Spa: There is a Spa on site and the hotel provides each guest with a voucher for a ‘Green Monkey Massage’. I have to say that we were surprised when the massage lasted a full 45 minutes and wasn’t just a taster. The spa was quite quiet on the day we went but that didn’t stop them starting up the steam room purely so that we could use it.

Beach: The beach is a 3-5 minute bus trip away and the hotel provides a complementary bus at a few set times each day – this can also go along to the local town if you desire. The beach area is quite small and fairly rocky so we ended up walking along and under a bridge to find a slightly nicer area. ‘The General’ has sun loungers and cold drinks available for guests of the hotel.

Overall this hotel is fantastic and we couldn’t have hoped for more on our honeymoon. The tranquility of the grounds, the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food made sure it was a holiday that we will remember for the rest of our lives.

Thank you Roddy for an amazing time, we hope that we can come back again soon!

wow, wow, wow!

My wife and I stayed here for 11 nights in June 2010. This really is a great place for relaxing and letting go.
The hotel itself is set in beautiful, scenic, well kept gardens with a great view of the sea about a mile away and a deep pool. It has about 40 suites.
We were shown by Terry to room 103 which was a ground floor suite in the gardens. The room was clean and large with a living room, kitchenette, bathroom, and bedroom with twin beds.
The bar and restaurant are in the main building overlooking the pool and gardens and just off of the reception area. The bar is unfortunately quite small and if there are any more than 6 people around it, it is a little difficult to get to but even so the staff are great for keeping you watered.
The restaurant is open plan and large. Breakfast is varied with eggs made to order, buffet English breakfast or cereal, fruit and toast. Lunch is on menu, with various sandwiches, salads or fresh local fish. Evening food is either buffet or A'la carte and again very varied. Overall the food is sensational.
We received a free couple’s massage from the onsite spa which was very professional and totally relaxing. My wife also had a facial. The spa facilitates and treatments are of a very high standard and the staff were very knowledgeable and welcoming.
If you want to keep up your fitness regime there is a well equipped gym but for me it was the full size squash court that kept me busy in the morning before breakfast.
Finally on reception you can pre book tours and a 3 times a day shuttle to the local beach (15 min walk). It's not the greatest of beaches (there are so much better including, Bottom Bay, Foal Bay, Mullins Beach and Rockley) so I would highly recommend hiring a car (we used Coconut Car Hire - best price). In terms of tours we didn't really want to do too much but Terry highly recommended a night out in Oistins. I can see why. We had an amazing evening with great company and great tour guide.

The only small downsides are obviously your not on the beach and the pool side bar is only open for the bbq evenings.

Overall we had a magical 11 days and really didn't want to come home. The reason, well the hotel is great but the whole expericane is topped off by the best staff and guests ever.

We were told the hotel will be closed at the end of June for some renovations. I understand that this is to build a new bar and change some of the kitchen area. Overall this will help the hotel and I think it will make it even better.

If you are looking for pure relaxation with heavenly staff then this is the place for you.

We had the penthouse suite for a week and if your sharing (it has 2 bedrooms) then do yourself a favour and pay a little extra to have this. Its one of the best rooms I have ever stayed in.

We didnt do all-inclusive as we were working a bit and not at teh hotel enough. The kitchens as very well equipped though and a trip to the supermarket sorted us out very well.

They are trying hard to raise the calibre of this hotel and the staff are very helpful. The food is excellent (though could perhaps vary a little more) and even the house red was great. The spa and gym are very good. Lovely pool and the views spectacular.

Eating out is expensive in Barbados, so all-inclusive is a good deal, but do yourself a favour and go to Fish Pot (10 mins) for lunch, or Mullins. Spieghtown looks grotty at first but is great if you explore a bit. Casareep is meant to be good according to local chums.

This hotel is a great deal. If you can afford Sandy Lane you probably dont bother with Tripadvisor, but this is a much better deal than the bigger beach all-inclusives which are a bit soulless.

This is hotel, was set up a cul-de-sac up a steap hill from the beach, upon arrival, there was a little faffing around but a rum punch goes down very well ! And as soon as you check in to your apartment - you cant help but relax into things !! It was huge, and like a home from home.
The pool area was fab - and the pool itself was never cold, even earnly morning - just perfect.
The grounds were lovely also, and the monkeys were truely brilliant. Just sit amongst them and you can get some brilliant pictures :)
The staff are friendly - but very laid back, so after you get used to the fact asking them to repeat themselves, things are fine. Sometimes there is a wait on drinks as there is only 1 barman on at a time.
The food is totally 1st class - we didn't have a bad meal and we were AI for a week.
The beach - to be honest we were very dissapointed with this, and i think it should be moved or changed. There is a shuttle service daily. But we never used this.
We actually hired a car as they drive on the same side of the road and it only worked out to have a Jeep soft top at £35 a day, which we thought was very good. From cocanut car rentals, they drop the car off and collect from the hotel.
We toured all around the island - and had a ball at doing it - stopped off at all of the little unknown coves and beaches, went into town, made our way to the beach for sunsets - its was fab.
Driving over there is really safe, and Barbados as a whole is such a safe place to go.

Kate and David Alvarez.
