Sugar Cane Club Hotel & Spa
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 11, 2014

Just returned from a week at the Sugar Cane and considering the official rating is 3.5 the hotel is very good.
Our room was located in the main block on the ground floor. The rooms are very spacious, with living/kitchen area, sleeping area and bathroom. I do agree with some previous reviews in that the rooms do need updating, but they are clean and comfortable. It was really nice having a room on the ground floor as we had a veranda and sun beds just outside, very convenient for when it rained as we could just run in and out as needed.
The down side to the location of our room was firstly it was very near to the staff entrance and it could become very noisy (especially with the leaf blowers). Just because they are up and about at 7.00am, doesn't mean we want to be too!! The second reason is the Island Safari trips......Near enough everyday the Island Safari trips stop off with at least 2 or 3 trucks worth of tourists who aren't staying there to use the toilet, have lunch and presumably to have a wander round the gulley to look at the monkeys. We nicknamed it goldfish bowl time....They seemed to wander around the hotel as they pleased having a good old stare and some even using the pool and wandering in to guests rooms to have a look around. In my opinion, this is not acceptable and needs to stop for the sake of the guests staying at SCC. If you are over the other side of the hotel it mostly doesn't really affect you, but to those in the main block I felt it was an issue.
The food is good, especially for a 3.5 star. The breakfasts are good, there is quite a good choice for lunch. Maybe they could offer smaller lighter lunches as an alternative? Evening meals are good and we had around 3 buffet meals whilst we were there. They were OK, but I am fussy and I didn't starve. One of the issues with the evening meals is that the Almond Beach guests are allowed to book (as we had to) to eat at our hotel. Due to this, some of the guests staying at SCC had to wait until the later sitting which I didn't feel was right. Priority should be given to guests staying at SCC.
A big thank you to Neil who mainly ran the poolside bar...that poor chap runs around doing everything. Sadly when he's not there you certainly notice the difference. Also a big thank you to Rodney who helped out with my mosi bites by getting me some aloe vera and to Sadie who was always helpful.
As in previous reviews, the staff are in the main very good, however there are a handful who could do with returning to the charm school from whence they came.
I had a massage at the spa which was excellent, a must if you get the chance.
We went into Speightstown one day and had a wander along the beach, we used the Shuttle bus provided by the hotel which is very handy.
The hotel isn't on the beach, and I must admit I did miss this, but the beach was accessible if you wanted to go and the hotel provide a packed lunch if you want to go.
All in all the hotel is lovely, but there are improvements/changes that could be made to make it so much better and make guests feel they are the priority not those staying at the Almond Beach.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the main block to avoid noise from the staff entrance and the stares from t...

we visited jan 16th as a stopover for four days before flying to st Vincent and in honesty we were not expecting much after some of the pics on the website, well we could not have been more wrong , it was a fabulous place. We were allocated a lovely room overlooking the gully and the highlight of my morning was a cup of tea watching the monkeys, breakfast was superb , fresh eggs etc pastries nice bread Yummy . The pool was clean , the entertainment low key and tasteful , all the food was very good. Thank you to Peter Charles for his great managerial skills and his kind touch on our last evening dinner!! We took the glass bottom boat trip which was great . The shuttle bus was excellent and all the local buses were easy cheap and we made our way to oistins on one !If this hotel was on the beach it would be 5 star and very pricey, do not let the location put you off they pack you a beach lunch if you want .
We loved the place and were sad to leave, would like to go back for longer, thank you to all the staff who were superb.

Room Tip: I personally normally would only want a sea view room but this was distant and in my opinion not the...

As repeat guests to this gem of a hotel we were thrilled to have been given the room we have had previously - 103. The welcome we received on arrival was as warm as ever and the cold towel and rum punch much appreciated.
I have reviewed this hotel before and as ever the rooms, gardens, pool, bar service and food were all good but I have to say that the staff seemed happier than ever, all staff welcoming every time you saw them, happy with a smile, asking how you were, how your holiday was going and wishing my husband and I Happy Birthday on our two special occasions while we were there.
Thank you Peter Charles and team for a fabulous holiday. I can't really single out a particular staff member as they were all good.
The ice lollies with a refeshing cold towel afterwards were a nice addition to the service by the pool in the afternoons.
We will be back! Enjoy!

we have just returned from this hotel and have got to say the hotel lived up to all the great reviews it gets on tripadvisor. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. The rooms are excellent, possibly the bathroom might be getting ready for a bit of a refurb but that is being a bit picky. The first week was slightly better than the second due to an influx of guests from the sister hotel at Almond Beach, that's where you go for the beach. It really put extra pressure on the restaurant staff and really the bar area isn't large enough to cater for the extra customers. It also took away a little of the special feel this hotel gives you by its size. There is a lot of repeat guests ad they were a little unhappy about this too. We were told they might put a restriction on the numbers, hopefully this will help. The food on the whole was excellent, the only slight gripe would be the food on buffet nights sometimes wasn't as hot as it ought to be. Would we return? YES if we were to return to Barbados we wouldn't consider anywhere else. Well done to all the Management and staff for making this a memorable and very relaxing holiday

Room Tip: we were in 504 it offered a great view

We booked this hotel, purely on reviews on here, and am pleased to say it lived up to those excellent reviews,i wont duplicate what many people have said, but i will duplicate that the staff were superb and friendly, probably the best we have EVER come across,we didn't come across any rude or aggressive staff, these are a credit to the manager Mr Charles, who also is always about and is extremely friendly and also very 'hands on' when it gets busy! We had a lovely room 504 on the third floor which had a lovely view over the gully and an oceanview too,one slight niggle was that down by the side of our room was a pathway, which has a lot of coming an going with staff pulling trollies,up and down taking stuff to and from the other restaurant,to be fair it was only noisy during about 2 and 4 for some reason, which is the time I love to have an afternnon snooze, also beer deliverys food and drink deliverys were just behind our room aswell, but as I said earlier only for a couple of hours in an afternoon, not in the morning or at night,so if your still out and about or sunbathing this will not bother you at all!!! The food we found was fabulous when you had the a carte lunch menu and evening menus, and people who say they couldn't get a drink in the restaurant, well our glasses were never empty.the white wine which is all we drink, was a little bit sweeter than we usually like but got used to it very quickly, you do need quite a few glasses before you feel you have had a drink because its not that strong! The food on the buffet nights was varied too,but we found as with the buffet breakfasts things could do with being much hotter than they were! The beach is nice that the bus takes you too but it not 'stunning' picture postcard stuff! The beach belongs to the Almond beach hotel which has been closed for refurbishments ,this opened up again while we were staying there so the first week we had the beach to ourself, the second week it was very busy with the guests stopping at the hotel, the hotel is run or owned by the same people who run Sugar Cane Club, and while we were there,we found out that guests could come from Almond beach for dinner at Sugar cane and we could go there, there is a taxi to take you to and from each hotel, but only so many can come to sugar cane as its a lot smaller,we noticed about 5 or 6 couples and the odd table of 4 using our restaurant most nights which made it a lot busier, and seem to take away the 'ambiance' of the little community of sugar cane guests, and speaking to many of repeat guests they were not happy about this either, this does put more pressure on the restaurant staff ,there is no wonder the guests come to sugar cane because in my eyes Almond beach is a dump, but im not reviewing that anyway and we never went for dinner there! These are all just slight niggles which in no way ruined any part of our holiday and if I went back to Barbados this is where I would stop!! We had a lovely lovely time, the staff Ashley,sade,sharon.raquel.ryan,macallister.antonio,tonia were superb thankyou!!! Daff who kept our room nice and clean too!!!

Don’t normally write reviews but I feel that I need to share some realistic impressions of the hotel as the majority of the reviews score the SCC rather more highly than the reality deserves. We booked this hotel as part of a birthday celebration trip prior to a cruise. On arrival at reception we were kept waiting until guests (who arrived after us) were led to their rooms which we thought rather strange. However, on arriving at our room (No. 100) we realised why. It was situated at the rear of the hotel, completely on its own, next to the start of the gulley walk with an unappealing east view of trees and some sort of hotel utility building. The room was even worse, particularly the bedroom which had a small window at ceiling height with opaque glass and bars, resembling a cell. The shower fitting was hanging off the wall and the whole accommodation was very tired. We immediately requested to move to a better room as the other rooms overlooked lovely manicured grounds and faced west for the sunset. By this time, there were no guests waiting to be allocated rooms, thus not causing any concern to new arrivals. We were told that the hotel was 100% full and that “we were only staying for 2 nights”. We were in fact staying for three and I felt aggrieved that this should be part of the criteria of room allocation. The receptionist, Pricilla was very abrupt but agreed to move us next day when changeovers were happening. (The hotel actually felt less than full and it was most annoying, not to be able to settle in and have to live out of a suitcase for the first night).
We enquired first thing in the morning at reception if a room was ready and a new receptionist said she would find us by the pool. I then went back at lunchtime, having heard nothing and was told that they had tried to find us but no one had appeared at the pool and we had been there all morning waiting. The receptionist then showed me to a suitable room and asked for us to move asap. We packed our things and in the process missed the Virgin rep who left a message for us to ring him! I almost felt that I needed to remind all concerned that we were actually on holiday, not the staff and rep! However the new room was very acceptable with good lighting, a decent bathroom and a view of the monkeys in the grounds – much better and more to the expected standard.
There were many good things about the hotel – wonderfully well-manicured grounds, with cheerful groundsmen, a good standard of cleanliness throughout and helpful and efficient staff such as Neil at the pool bar, Roy at the main bar and most of the waitresses. I agree that some were actually quite rude as per the previous reviews but felt that these were possible cultural differences. The food was good in the main for a short stay where repetition was not a problem. The BBQ evening was very good with a steel band and the chef produced some tender marinated steaks with good salads and puds. The white and rose house wines were both terrible, sweet Californian style, but red wine was better and the cocktails were delicious.
I would not describe the hotel as 5* luxury but very acceptable for a a short stay before our real holiday started.

Room Tip: Avoid Room 100 but others all appear to be good.

Dear Guests, Thank you for your feedback on your recent visit to Sugar Cane Club Hotel & Spa. It’s important to us in order for us to have a clear understanding how guests to our home feel about their visit to SCC. I regret you feel your visit to Sugar Cane Club Hotel & Spa was disappointing in some ways as I do believe your experience was unusual rather than the norm.
We do have gully side rooms that are very popular with repeat and first time guests who normally sit on their patio and watch the Monkeys frolicking in the Trees. Priscilla is one of our front desk ambassadors who go out of her way to make everyone comfortable and happy. As you rightfully said it may be possible cultural differences. You did mention a few of our great employees who you thought were helpful and I have certainly passed on your comments to them. I do not say this lightly; we have put forward a sincere effort at sugar Cane Club Hotel & Spa to improve service, amenities, training our staff and have been acting on feedback from all guests. I take your comments to heart and I assure you we will work appropriately with our team to improve on every level as a 3.5 star property.
Best wishes from the entire SCC team!

We stayed for two nights before our cruise on the Royal Clipper and another night before flying home. This is a very quiet hotel away from the beach, and is set in well kept grounds. The rooms can really be classed as suites, as they had an additional lounge area with 2 sofas and coffee table, dining table with two chairs and a fully fitted kitchen. Our agent had booked a sea view room so we were in the main building, and had a large balcony with table and chairs.

Most of the rooms are in 1 & 2 storey buildings throughout the grounds. We had the sea view, but colourful monkeys were seen in other parts of the grounds. The staff were friendly and very helpful.

We stayed at the hotel and were on the same cruise as Phil H and would totally agree with his review !!

Whilst this hotel was NOT on the beach, the shuttle bus ran to the beach and town several times a day, and also provided FREE trips on the hotels's glass bottom boat to see and swim with the turtles !!!
