What a lovely hotel. I can't recommend it enough. Beautiful rooms in an exotic setting. Staff could not have been nicer and the food was delicious and mainly a la carte which is change from the buffets in normal all inclusive packages. It is a little isolated but the hotel more than makes up for that. Hire a car and it is no distance from anywhere. If I was to return to Barbados I would only stay here!

Fantastic hotel - lovely rooms, really nice pool to relax beside, an interesting gully to walk down. This hotel based on its location will not suit people who want to see sights without a car but having a car adds to the adventure as there is a lot to see in Barbados even though it is such a small island!!

The rooms were clean and well appointed - the air conditioning worked a little too well and it could make it very cold at night!! A fan in the room may have been a good addition so people could use that as well.

The staff were wonderfully helpful and nothing was too much trouble.

The rum punches are to die for - best on the island and I have been visiting Barbados for 16 years so I know what I am talking about. So I would recommend going to the Manager's Rum Punch party! It is also a good opportunity to chat to other couples and the staff.

The shuttle to the beach and Speightstown was good and efficient although sometimes the times didn't work allow much flexibility but I would recommend a car if staying here.

We only ate dinner and breakfast once at the hotel as we had our own restaurants we wanted to visit and we found buying supplies in Speightstown more economical so we could indulge in the more expensive restaurants. I would say though I was not impressed by the standard of food produced at the buffet and for the price I would have expected a better standard of food. The breakfast was ok (the coconut bread was gorgeous - asked for the recipe and was promised it but never received it....)

Overall, I would recommend this hotel 100% but if you want to see more of the island then you do need a car.

I knew you were going to get me on not getting back to you with this coconut bread :) so here it is! If you want me to email it to you, contact me directly at roddy@sugarcaneclub.com

Coconut Sweet Bread

2 lb Self Rising Flour
1 lb brown Sugar
3/4 lb Butter
1/4 lb Shortening (optional)
1 grated coconut (approx 3 cups)
1 tsp Salt
2 tsp Vanilla
1 tsp nutmeg
Raisins - Optional
Cherries - Optional
Makes approximately 3 medium sized breads

Coconut Filling (optional)

1/2 cup grated coconut
2 tbs Sugar
1 tsp mixed essence
2 tbs water
• Put all ingredients in small pan & place on low fire
• Stir continuously for approximately 3 mins or until sugar is dissolved.

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees
• Mix all dry ingredients together (except fruit)
• Mix butter & Shortening into mixture, using fingers, until mixture resembles large bread crumbs
• Add fruit to mixture
• Use enough liquid to bind mixture together. This could be coconut water, milk or just plain water.
• Knead dough for a few minutes. The longer you need the dough, the firmer the bread becomes. Sweet bread is traditionally a firm bread, but some people like it soft & crumbly. The choice is yours.
• Grease & flour loaf pan
• Fill pan halfway with dough
• Place a slender line of coconut filling lengthwise down middle of dough.
• Put remaining dough on top
• Cut light crisscross pattern on top with a knife for decoration (optional)
• Bake for 30-45 minutes or until an inserted knife comes out clean.

This hotel is fantastic!! We were an hour late arriving due to bad weather. When we got there Michelle greeted us with a rum punch whilst we filled in all the necessary forms. We got shown to our rooms which were amazing. We booked an ocean view and we weren't disappointed. The rooms were spacious, nicely decorated and the air conditioning in the bedroom worked really well. The room was spotlessly clean and the extra touches of toiletries and bathrobes were perfect. The food was excellent. Breakfast buffet consisted of bacon, eggs, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, toast, cereal and fruit. Lunch was waiter service serving anything from sandwiches to fish or meat dishes. The evening meal varied between buffet, waiter service or a BBQ. I cannot praise the staff in the restaurant and the bar enough. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The chef and the kitchen staff deserve a mention for their hard work and excellent quality ingredients. In particular Sade who served us most days was one of the friendliest we met. She was so relaxed talking to the residents and having a laugh and a joke with us. She knew when to ask us if we needed another drink but wasn't there around your table constantly. If there were awards for employee of the year, she would win hands down. Having said that all the other staff were also excellent at their jobs. Lavinia, Shamira, McAlister (hope that's right!!) to name a few. The gentleman who took us to the beach was also very friendly and helpful. In fact whilst he was getting some gas for the bus, he got myself and another couple a local paper as they had run out of them in the hotel shop. My husband also did the gully walk with Rodney, the head gardener. He was very knowledgeable and very much a people person.

It was great seeing the Green Monkeys roaming around the grounds as well as the chicken and her chicks!! We bought some art work from the gallery on site. The gym and spa and table tennis and squash areas looked amazing but we were too busy sitting by the pool drinking lovely rum cocktails to use them!!

It didn't bother us not being on the beach. The Hotel shuttle bus will take you to Heywood's and Mullins Beach and Port St Charles. The bus was very reliable. The glass bottomed boat was also a fantastic morning out. Swimming with the turtles in the clear waters was amazing.

The management are also helpful and friendly. We went to Rod's (the mananger) Rum Punch Party and got chatting to him and to other couples there. We also met Sean, who was the new assistant manager. When we left to go to the airport both managers saw us off and thanked us for choosing their hotel.

All in all I would definitely go there again. The hotel, the location, the grounds, everything about it is just paradise.

Keep up the good work and we'll be back very soon!!

I have posted a review regarding this hotel, as did my Husband, but the mysteriously disappeared. Never mind, here it goes again...

Ignore the negative reviews. If you want a beach holiday, book a hotel on the beach. This is a beautiful, secluded resort. The food is excellent. Although not a particularly fussy eater, I don't eat meat, so things can be difficult. The chefs were very pleased to tailor the menu to my needs. The pool is great and the rooms clean and comfortable. The service very friendly and helpful. A genuinely relaxed holiday :-)

I cannot for the life of me understand some of the latest reviews that havebeen writen, first let me say that we have been to this hotel twice, 2010 & 2009, both were absolutly fantastic, i will admit that the second time we were not made so welcome as we had had a dissagreement with them on our first visit, just a minor thing but the managers seemed to take it to heart, never the less i would highly recomend this hotel to anyone, if you want a fantastic peacfull holiday this is PARADISE, i note that the beach has closed, but i really dont see what the problem is there as there are some loverly beaches close by and if they are providing transport i dont see the problem, i cannot understand why they could not provide beer or rum punch in the cool bags, but again if you cannot sit on the beach for a couple of hours without a beer then i would think you have a problem, further i think the remarks about the food being poor are rubbish, the best was breakfast but all the meals were good, the barbicue around the pool is not as good but i woud still rate as very good, and before anyone says are we looking to score points with the hotel for future visits the answer is no we have no plans to return, again i woud say to all of you this is a PARADISE holiday you will not regret going

we arrived at the sugar cane club on the 7 july. On our arrival we were greeted by priscilla who worked on reception. We were given a complimentry drink on arrival. We were shown to our room and had everything explained to us.
The apartments were truly wonderful. We spent maybe the first half hour or so, walking around the gardens and taking in the wonderful views. The gardeners really do a great job at keeping them looking so pristine. When we were there the hotel was quiet, which was a bonus, it was like having your own priate pool.
The food was exceptional, my partner craig is very particular with what he eats, and one of his concerns before we arrived was that he would not have enough choices of food to eat. this was definately not the case. The staff were poilite and courteous, and were more than happy to help with any thing we asked for. Marrissa who works in the kitchen also turned her had to some singing on one particular night, at the request of some other holiday makers. What a great voice.
Shamira was one of the waitresses that spent alot of time with us, whether that be waiting on us at meal times, or the mixology session (cocktail making lessons). What a great afternoon that turned out to be.
We read the reviews on trip advisor, before e left, and after being there i trul.y cannot understand what people have to complain about. I would most definatley reccommed it to any one that was thinking about going to barbados. They will certainly have a great time.
Thankyou so much to all the staff that made our holiday so enjoyalbe. :)

We ( a group of three friends in our mid thirties) travelled to Barbados in on 30th June 2011 for a 2 week stay at the Sugar Cane Club. We were very excited because of the reviews on tripadvisor, and because the description of the hotel suited our needs (relaxed/away from hustle and bustle). We were aware that the hotel was not located on the beach, but it had a beach facility where you could use sunbeds, umbrellas and have access to your all-inclusive drinks. To our dismay, on arrival we were promptly told that the beach facility had been closed and that from then on all the hotel offered was an infrequent minibus run to some of the local beaches, with a cool bag for your drinks. Given our expectations we were hugely disappointed by this. The following day (my Birthday), we decided to try this new arrangement. We asked for some cold drinks and the famous "rum punch" to be packed in a cool bag for us, only to be told that we could not take alcohol with us (no further explanation was given). We were then deposited at Mullins beach, to be collected 2 hours later. We then learned, as with most beaches in Barbados, that there are no public beds or facilities. We were charged $75 BDS for 2 hours for 3 sunbeds. If we hadn't paid we could not have used the toilets or shower. On our return to the hotel we had decided that we no longer wanted to stay at the Sugar Cane Club. Not only had the holiday been mis-sold to us, but the staff were nothing but rude and surly throughout the whole experience (rolling eyes, snide comments etc). As an example: although we were aware and happy with the dress code for the restaurant (long trousers), another couple staying at the hotel hadn't realised this. On their first night after flying they arrived at the restaurant apologetic that the gentleman only had long shorts. This led to a very public humiliation, and the couple were escorted to some back room for their dinner (we joked at the time that they were headed for the incinerator). I simply can't understand why the restaurant manger simply didn't have a quiet word with the gentleman about getting some trousers for the following night, and allowing him to dine with the rest of us just this once. Crazy!. Luckily, our tour operators were extremely understanding about the situation regarding the beach and our treatment by the staff, and moved us immediately to the more expensive Almond Casuarina Beach for the remainder of the holiday. They covered the cost of this and even refunded the money lost on sunbeds! (fantastic service). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the new hotel even though it was in a much busier part of Barbados that we had originally sought to avoid. In the end we hired a car to go back to the north of the island and see the sights we would have missed. There were good points about the Sugar Cane Club; for example, beautiful Gardens, great food and the resident green monkeys. Unfortunately this was overshadowed by the new beach arrangements and the rude staff. The beach is a big part of holiday in Barbados and $75 BDS on top of the sugar cane club nightly rate is a lot to pay for it. For the money there are far better rural (away from beach) hotels to stay at in other parts of the world so why stay here? We felt that the hotel should have moved its facility to another beach and not simply closed it down without alerting future pre-booked guests. People should also be warned of the extent of building work going on near the hotel (beach side).
