Eight years ago I spent two nights in La Gazelle D'Or and left convinced that it was about to close down. I was wrong. Yesterday I had lunch there and left with exactly the same feeling. The whole scene is glorious, of course – like a chic French Riviera Hotel in the 1970s – but it lacks animation. There was no one else in the restaurant. If you're really rich, into gardens and can't stand human beings, you will love this hotel. Mere mortals might wish to try Darzahia.
