“Incredible”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 13, 2012

This was quite simply one of the most incredible places that i went to in Namibia. think Matopo NP in Zim and then multiply it by 10, its astounding. a real jewel and one that is underrated and consequently a great pleasure to visit.

Forget Cape Cross or the seal colony come straight here and spend the evening. You will have to try and look past the reception area as its being done up but the smell of cat urine is almost unbearable.

Didnt eat or try any of the services so i really cant comment. but the magic of the place just blew me away.

Enjoy!

Had an awesome stay here in October. The owners are very pleasant, speaking several languages. The rooms are really nice and the pool was great on the hot day we were there. The area is great for hiking and rock climbing and it has a lot of wildlife to be viewed. Great home cooked, family style meals are served in the large pavilion and it's cool to meet people from all over the world staying here, too.

The only reason to go to Ameib is the indeed stunning scenery with a lot of hiking opportunities. Everything else made us want to run for it: the outdated ranch and rooms, the suppressed and depressed employees, the reception area that smelled horribly from the 50+ cats straying around and the food which was a deadly combination of German cuisine of 1950-1970 and bad quality ingredients. There wasn't a single meat that didn't taste like old and greasy mutton (and we stayed three nights). Also, a lot of noisy German travel groups passed through during our time there (raving about the food...). The landlady is a phenomenon: quite friendly, but so old she probably met the Kaiser in person. Thus, she recommended the "easy" climbing trail around Elephant's Head which was opened in 2001 and which she probably has never seen herself. It wasn't easy at all... (but still fun).
We heard later that the farm had been forced into a compulsory auction last year and she just has right to live there until she dies. But obviously she's still somehow in charge and we kind of felt sorry for her because she should really be able to retire and give the new owners the opportunity to bring this farm into the new millennium.

I visited here with two other girl friends in April 2009. I always meant to write a review for it but never got around it it until now. The campsite is fab - small pool with red rock backdrop, braii facilities and guest house nearby if you want a beer or two. Very safe and lovely walks to the rock art and balancing rocks. Would highly recommend this campsite if you are on a self drive holiday and are not phased by the slightly ruted to get there. Also home to some lovely donkeys!
