The only reason to go to Ameib is the indeed stunning scenery with a lot of hiking opportunities. Everything else made us want to run for it: the outdated ranch and rooms, the suppressed and depressed employees, the reception area that smelled horribly from the 50+ cats straying around and the food which was a deadly combination of German cuisine of 1950-1970 and bad quality ingredients. There wasn't a single meat that didn't taste like old and greasy mutton (and we stayed three nights). Also, a lot of noisy German travel groups passed through during our time there (raving about the food...). The landlady is a phenomenon: quite friendly, but so old she probably met the Kaiser in person. Thus, she recommended the "easy" climbing trail around Elephant's Head which was opened in 2001 and which she probably has never seen herself. It wasn't easy at all... (but still fun).
We heard later that the farm had been forced into a compulsory auction last year and she just has right to live there until she dies. But obviously she's still somehow in charge and we kind of felt sorry for her because she should really be able to retire and give the new owners the opportunity to bring this farm into the new millennium.More
