We visited Mauritius between 29th June and 5th July 2018. Booked our group package trip a month prior through Makemytrip.com (MMT) after comparing with a few other travel companies and found it the most suitable. We travelled from Mumbai with our one year old infant. We opted for the Air Mauritius direct flight and Jalsa Beach Resort in Poste Lafayette (East Coast) and went half board.. The land package was managed by Sea Side Holidays on behalf of MMT. The usual ILX, North Tour and South Tour and Airport transfers were included in the package. Insurance from AXA was taken separately which I thought was giving a good family floater cover for the reasonable price.
MMT Service – Overall good.. but could have assisted on bassinet seat blocking and given us a proper view on baggage allowance..
Mauritius Airline – Good.. Airline food was average though. They told us bassinet seat for infant was for upto 12 month baby but it was the size of a 6 month old so they did not allow but luckily the flight was not fully booked while going so we got a middle row empty which worked well to put the baby to sleep on the regular seats. Not so lucky on the return. Baggage allowance on this flight was 30 Kg (1 Piece) Checked in + 7 Kg (1 Piece) Cabin + Laptop per adult and 20 Kg (1 Piece) Checked in for infant but no cabin baggage. This was sufficient for us. Ask MMT for the PNR as soon as the tickets are booked so you can call the airline and block the bassinet seat and not wait till the travel date.
Jalsa Beach – Very nice property on the east coast (google maps sometimes shows it on the west.. some error.. needs to be corrected) , beach/ lagoon facing, very clean, no mosquitoes, good food, suitable for Indians, their Indian Chef Rustom was more than happy to make something specific and also make some changes to the taste the we wanted and also some specific cooking for the baby. They also provided some complementary snack on arrival and on the return date during lunch time which was appreciated and had some snacks during the evening everyday complementary.. Nice of them to give us a cake to celebrate our son’s birthday.. It is at a Peaceful location.. away from the crowd.. good for someone who wants to enjoy a private beach property with a beautiful lagoon rather than night life and crowded beaches.. Our Deluxe room 317 had a good view with balcony.. free wifi.. the hotel also had a boat house with kayaking & peddle boating complementary and other activities like kite surfing, glass bottom boat ride and snorkeling trips for a charge.. apart from ants in the room.. not sure if was only our room.. everything else was great.. the housekeeping staff was responsive to our requests to clean the room quickly. They had a SPA.. we didn’t utilize it.. usually steam should be complementary but everything in the SPA was chargeable. The pool with bar was a good sight. Very few beer options though.. I liked the Blue Marlin local beer which was available for MUR 200.. Mineral water is expensive in Mauritius in hotels.. can be upwards of 100 MUR per bottle. They gave three 500 ml bottles per day complementary to us.. It would be good to stock more from the supermarket for much lesser.. Cabs are expensive.. if you like to explore the island on a budget you can take the Bus No. 26 right outside the hotel gate to visit the Flacq market/ Super U mall which is just 15-20 mins from the resort for ~110 MUR round trip for 2.. or even go to Port Louis with 2 buses to hop (26 and 27) within a little more than an hour for just ~250 MUR round trip for two and a good way to check out the country and the people. Search online for Mauritius bus routes and they have a great website with the routes, charges and frequency to go to any point. This can save you a few thousands and can be a fun experience. One minus was the easterly winds which restricted the boat house usage most of the times but I guess that is only little heavy during the winters.. some would opt for North and West island stay to skip the winds is what I was told before I booked but weather was like just about right otherwise cool like an Indian hill station with scattered rains and otherwise cloudy or sunny most of the times. Overall great hotel and staff would love to go back again. Thanks to the entire team.
Seaside Holidays – Focus was more on water sports and shopping and slightly lesser on sight-seeing and missed spending more time on ILX. ILX tour was not managed so well for us. North tour we skipped.. heard it was boring mainly shopping.. apart from a few good churches.. rather go on your own by Bus as suggested earlier and explore Port Louis, Caudan Waterfront, China Town etc. at ease.. Try the Cana colada at the Caudan waterfront.. they spike it with rum if you want but I would suggest you have it without mostly and towards the last you can add the rum… Shopping for souvenirs is cheapest if you bargain right at the central market there J South tour is good.. walking and exploring the valley of colors was a better option I thought than the rides and was a good small trek which took not more than an hour. Pickup and drop from airport was fine but the only minus was we needed to lift the bags on our own which were quiet heavy and put it into the bus from the back window.. Rather they should have their staff take care of it.
Car driving – Seemed like a lot of long distances to cover and difficult to drive while it may seem easy as there were lot of twists and turns and inside roads.. while rental would be cheaper the car rental companies expected a USD 500 deposit blocked thru credit card .. also which would be released only after ~2 weeks after we return the car in same condition. I would say go for Buses instead for long distances and bike/ cycle for short ones. The repost had bike/ cycles on hire too but we didn’t get the time to use it..
Few Travel essentials – Travel Adapter.. power converter not needed.. carry battery backup.. umbrella.. sunglasses, caps, hats.. some sunscreen.. swimming goggles/ cap, jacket, food packets/ snacks.. sun glasses..
Forex – Best is to convert the INR to USD locally in India and not at Indian airports.. and then convert USD to MUR at Mauritius Airport which give a good rate.. and on return convert the MUR to USD at Mauritius Airport and USD to INR at your local agent in India.. this will I guess give you the best deal. Only keep in mind better rates are on 100 USD notes and the lower denominations would give you slightly lesser rates back in India.. so best is to change the smaller notes to max 100 ones to get the best deal back home.
Mauritius – Overall very beautiful, great people, lots of Indians, some would compare Goa with it.. but a lot much better in terms of lagoons, water, landscapes, weather, beaches, water sports and adventure rides for a slightly higher more price.. & days were not sufficient to explore all the good parts.. would love to go back again soon…
